The Joe Townsend Band

The Joe Townsend Band have picked up music from their travels through Europe and America, a background in Jazz and Blues plus the culturally diverse environment of London itself. As a reflection of this cultural melting pot the band's essence is English albeit heavily influenced by Irish, Balkan and American styles. And the result: a sizzling set of danceable fiddle-led tunes with the individual virtuosity of the musicians flaunted in solos, all bound together with a tight energetic groove.
Fiddler Townsend is joined by Martin Green on accordion, Kubryk Townsend on double bass and Salah Dawson Miller on percussion, with guest musician Chris Van Dam on cimbalom.

"An affirmation of the power of simple acoustic music..." Songlines

"Townsend is a wild man on the fiddle. His quirky way around a jig, a czardas or a hora will call to mind the work of Canadian fiddler Oliver Schroer... Kubryk Townsend's jazzy work on the bass is especially strong. Joe and accordion player Martin Green often play as one instrument. Chris Van Dam's cimbalom races along underneath it all. Townsend has command of Celtic, gypsy, jazz, and old-time fiddle styles, with the ability to wail on all of them without losing sight of his purpose. His updated arrangements of traditional tunes expand the envelope while never exceeding the limits of good taste..." - Peggy Latkovich, RootsWorld

Musicians' Bios:
Joe Townsend is an excellent fiddle player who conjours a great range of earthy tones out of his instrument – an earthy richness, a nimble delicacy, strident double stopping, flying harmonics – and who's not afraid of a bit of scratchiness in the right places.

He's backed up by Martin Green on accordion, Kubryk Townsend on double bass and Salah Dawson Miller on percussion. Together they play traditional tunes and their own compositions with taut rhythmic complexity and poetic interaction. There are also touches of Stephan Grapelli and echoes of Arvo Pärt, but the overall impression is of a band that get the rare kick out of playing with the material.

Joe Townsend plays violin strongly influenced by Romanian and Turkish music. His roots lie in English music and together with his training in Jazz, Joe has developed his own unique sound. Joe has worked with Laurie Anderson, Taraf de Haidouks and the Nashville Bluegrass Band.

Martin Green is one of UK's most exciting young accordion players who made his name as the dynamic keyboardist with the Liza Carthy band and Joan Baez. Bass player Kubryk Townsend has worked with Spirit Level, Howard Levy and 'beat poet' Ken Nordine. Master percussionist Dawson Miller who has recently joined the band has played with the 3 Mustaphas 3 and his own group Saladin's Orchestra.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
