Love and Cigars (Go! Danish Folk Music)
(cdRoots code go-0111)
The 2011 release by this now well-established ensemble solidifies their standing as one of the true 'new routes' travelers of Denmark. Kristine Heebøll (violin and vocals), Nikolaj Busk (piano, accordion, harmonium) and Jens Ulvsand (bouzouki, guitar, vocals) have put together another strong set of contemporary roots recordings, both elegant and gritty.
Trio Mio got together for the first time in 2004 to record violinist and composer Kristine Heebøll’s début album “Trio Mio”. The music and combination of musicians quickly evolved into a performing trio with appearances in Denmark, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Trio Mio recorded their second album, “Pigeon Folk Pieces”, in 2005 and the effort was awarded 2 Danish Music Award Folk. On stage, the group established a unique contact with its audiences, opening a gripping musical universe for its listeners. Trio Mio has now played 250 concerts in Denmark, Ireland, England, Canada, Germany, Holland, Italy and Sweden and is working to spread their music to more countries and continents. The groups third CD, "Stories around a holy goat" was released August 2007 and won four Danish Music Awards - folk. The heart and soul of Trio Mio’s musical motivation is the burning desire to show the world that Danish and Swedish folk music is full of innovative possibilities.
The talent behind Trio Mio is 3 musicians:
Kristine Heebøll (violin and vocals) has been a top-ranked talent on the Danish folk music scene for 10 years. She has performed solo as well as with the folk groups Folkbits, Phønix, and Heebøll/Vinter duo. Kristine’s unique combination of drive and subtlety is fascinating and filled with enthusiasm. Her dazzling skills as a violinist are well supplemented as one of Denmark’s most prominent and creative composers. This talent was acknowledged with a Danish Music Award in 2006 and 2008 as “Composer of the year”.
Nikolaj Busk (piano, accordion, harmonium) is a young, shining talent on the Danish music scene with a musical spectrum that spans from jazz to electronic music to classic. He brings the listener into his energetic, sensitive and lyrical universe. Nikolaj is extremely active on the folk music scene with Hal Parfitt-Murray, Bjarke Falgren/Jens Lysdal, and Laura Mo, among others. In 2008 Nikolaj was acknowledged with a Danish Music Award as ”Instrumenalist of the year” and in 2009 as "Composer of the Year".
Jens Ulvsand (bouzouki, guitar, vocals) is the Trios representative from Sweden. With roots in Swedish folk music as well as jazz and African music, Jens lifts Trio Mio’s music into new dimensions with his sharp edge and nerve. He is an excellent player and contributes his talent with lyrics to Trio Mio’s repertoire. Jens has been fundamental for the Swedish Avadå Band for many years. He also plays with the Danish groups Færd and Scandinavian String Alliance. With many years of experience on the Swedish music scene, he adds strength and solidity to Trio Mio’s musical openness.
Please note! Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
