Westpark Music

Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
Thanks- Cliff, cdRoots

 Var det du – var det deg? - Kelpie $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-87139)

They are joined by a few other musicians on hardangar fiddle, percussion and bass on various tracks.
 Diagonal - Stockholm Lisboa Project $18.99 (cdRoots# wp-slp09)
The artists say: In this project, we explore our cultures and traditions Then travelling diagonally through Europe. Portugal in the southwest and Sweden in the northeast of Europe are 4.000 kilometers apart from each other geographically, but in music sometimes very close. We have to listen carefully to the inner voice of each song that we play. What does the song tell us? How does the song want to be performed? Sometimes it says "play me in a fado style". Other times it says "I need Nordic clothes". A few times it says "I was born in Portugal and have a cousin in Sweden". We call it "fado, polska and beyond". But that is to simplify this project, because the music doesn't let itself be defined in words, just in music! - The ensemble is Liana on lead vocals, Filip Jers on diatonic, chromatic and bass harmonica, Sérgio Crisóstomo on violin and Simon Stålspets on Nordic mandola, diatonic accordion. Listen
 Koder på snor - Valravn $18.99 (cdRoots# wp-valravn09)
The title ("Codes on a string") is inspired by the science of 'string theory' - that all forces and particles in the universe are connected. This second album by the band features original compositions based on tradition. Faroese singer Anna Katrin Egilstrøð still leads with her melancholic and longing Nordic tone as a starting point, and the band (from Denmark, Swizterland and Ecuador, using violins, violas, hurdy-gurdy, percussion and keyboards) offers power and space in fair measure to support her vision and sound.
 Rising Road - John Jones $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-jones09)
With seven traditional songs, four written by John, and one from the Oysterband vaults, Jones' first solo outing features Seth Lakeman (tenor guitar, fiddle, vocal), Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, piano, vocal), former Oysterman Ian Kearey (banjo-dulcimer), Rowan Godel (vocal), Sophie Walsh (harp) and Francois Deville (pedal steel) as well as homeboys Dil Davies (drums), Alan Prosser (guitars) and producer Al Scott. Listen

 Alpha - Alpcologne $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-87148)
Probably a totally new concept to you, as it is to me: 3 alphorns and vocals. The concept of the band arises from its unusual instrumentation. The warm, rich sound of the 4-meter-long traditional instruments encounters the expressiveness and melodic flexibility of the voice. Like the explorers of past centuries, Alpcologne can experiment with its own sound - playing Folk, Ska, Tango, Mambo, Cajun, Bluegrass, and Oriental music; original compositions or reinterpretations. Unique, to say the least!
 Qwade Wulf - Wolfgang Meyerings Malbrook $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-87150)
Meyering's second outing features a more coalesced band and a more cohesive sound. Songs about murder, jealousy and death. Strange children songs in polka style and a suite of schottische (Schotsken) played on mandola, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, German and Swedish bagpipe, Bohemian/German harp, flutes, fiddles, percussion, loops, sounds and more.
 Nordisk Sjel - Kerstin Blodig $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-87160)

Finnish accordionists Kimmo Pohjonen and Samuli Kosminen (Kluster) join Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn (percussion and guitar from King Crimson and duo TU) for a round of agressive, loud and utterly unclassfiable new music.
 Burlesque - Bellowhead $ 17.99 (cdRoots# wp-bellow06)
I have tried to tone down the prose to write this description, but what can I do? This is a remarkable recording, a shock to the sytem. fROOTS' Colin Erwin calls it "Astonishing!" It's Brecht meets Childe in Copeland's backyard, chats with Coltrane and dances with brass monkeys. This 11 piece band of notorious trad-arr hipsters (including Spiers and Boden and Benji Kirkpatrick) plays accordions, fiddles and such, punched into high gear by brass band and strings, and all manner of exceptional strangeness ensues. It's all traditional, in a sense, but like nothing you have heard before. Bonus: the package is a small, lovely hardcover book with lyrics, photos (wild!) and more.
 Meet You There - Oysterband $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-oyster07)
The 2007 studio album by the Brit folk-rock legends.
 The Great Polka Swindle - Polkaholix $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-polka)
The band says: 'No Polka - no fun! Without Polka there is no TexMex, no Merengue, no Ska, no Punk, no - I don't know what. Firstly: no Rock'n Roll. - What, you didn't know that?' Well, they do it all... and more, with high energy, great musicianship and lots of attitude.
 Kalmuk (CD) - Kimmo Pohjonen $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-kalmuk-cd)
Power of the Moon - Talking Water $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-talk)
Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose's latest project has quite a pedigree including Clannad, Sally Oldfield, John Lord, Farfarello, Norland Wind and Kelpie. These two musicians, well-known in the Celtic and Scandinavian world-music scene, are here a true pop-rock band at last, with no apologies.
 Trollsang - Kerstin Blodig $12.99 (cdRoots# wp-troll)
Less is more: this contemporary German artist sing and and plays excellent, punchy acoustic guitar, and presents a solo recording that focuses on both, with only some small accompaniment on 4 of the 12 tracks by Kristine Heboll (Denmark - fiddle), Ian Melrose (whistle), Peter Jakk (bass) and Urs Fuchs (percussion). Ancient themes rooted in northern European and Nordic mythology and history, modern guitar grooves... this is the best she has done to date, made more powerful by less production.
 3 Nights - Zulya and Children of the Underground $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-zulya4)
With roots in Russia and a Tartar family heritage, Australian singer and writer Zulya Kamalova is a globe-spanning artist, with a singular viewpoint and a musical style all her own. This is her fourth recording, and her first to include songs in English as well as Russian and tartar. With a solid band that is equally taleneted and capable of realizing her vision, Zulya's 2007 recording is a winner.
The Waltz Of Emptiness (And Other Songs On Russian Themes) - Zulya $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-zulya05)
Zulya strays from the oil fields of Tatarstan and finds herself on (and under) the chaotic streets of Moscow. With her new band, The Children of the Underground, Russian expate Zulya presents an all-original, Russian-language album about home and homelessness; belonging and freedom; difference and indifference; public transport and walking alone. A great voice, creative arrangements and great musicians make this a recommended recording.
Klezmer at the Cotton Club - Helmut Eisel and Band $16.99 (cdRoots# wp-eisel)
The German clainetist and his band perform a 'what if' and recreate what klezmer might have sounded like if it had been nurtured at NY's most important jazz emporium. It's fine stuff, and the band us more than up to the task, featuring Michael Marx on guitar, Stimme Stefan Engelmann on double bass, Nino Deda on accordion and Jochen Krämer on drums and percussion. They cover klezmer classics, jazz and blues standards (Handy, Ellington, Calloway) and Eisel's originals (like Rondo alla Klez) are stand-outs on this excellent recording. The sound is unique, and it swings like crazy.
prasti music - Schal Sick Brass Band $16.99 (cdRoots# wp-prasti)
The 2006 release by Schäl Sick Brass Band, a multi-culti band from Germany, features their usual blend of Balkan, Scandinavian, central and eastern European music, but it all comes together like never before. The lineup of guests adds to the fun, including appearances by Kristi Stassinopoulou (Greece), Andreas Grötzinger (Sweden), Anna Lindblom (Sweden), Fethi Ak (Türkyie), Stathis Kalyviotis (Greece), Mustapha Zekirov (Macedonia), and Serdar Yayla (Turkey).
 Live in Berlin - Transsylvanians $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-translive)

Jungfruburen - Två Fisk och en Fläsk $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-fisk)
Gutsy, rootsy folk rock from Sweden, fronted by sometimes sweet, sometimes raw vocals.
Kesh Mesh - Schäl Sick Brass Band $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-keshmesh)
 The Big Session Volume 1 - Oysterband and friends $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-big)
In May of 2004 Oysterband were joined for live sessions in London, in front of a small audience by a mighty cast - June Tabor, Phil Beer and Steve Knightley, Eliza Carthy and Ben Ivitsky, Jim Moray, James O'Grady and visiting American-gothick originals The Handsome Family, and they performed all sorts of familiar and unfamiliar material together over the three nights. These 15 tracks are from those concerts.
 Igen! - Transsylvanians $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-igen)
They call it 'Hungarian speedfolk' and it does have velocity. This mostly-acoustic ensemble's high-octane brand of folk encompasses the eastern and western with ease and attitude.
 elusive - Zulya $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-elusive)
Contemporary music from the steppes of Tatarstan. Zulya Kamalova creates and album of exquisite songs inspired by both the music of the world and by her own Tatar heritage. Accompanied by a sparse, ingenious ensemble (of everything from Tartar fiddle and jews arp to accordion and bass), this is an artful, beautiful recording.

This collection gathers together an excellent group of artists under the direction of Julio Pereira to pay contemporary tribute to this master of the Portuguese nova canção.
 Malbrook - Wolfgang Meyering $17.99 (cdRoots# wp-malbrook)
German multi-instrumentalist and composer Meyering brings together an ensemble of German and Nordic musicians to produce a unique recording, an exploration of the links between 'low' German and Scandinavian language and music. While this sounds like a scholarly approach, the music is anything but; it is a dark, raw, raucous clash of mandola, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, German and Swedish bagpipe, Bohemian/German harp, flutes, fiddles, percussion, sound samples and more.
 Huria - Sanna Kurki-Suonio $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# rk-huria)
Another powerful work by the singer who helped bring Hedningarna to international fame, Huria is a follow-up to Sanna Kurki-Suoni's acclaimed Kainuu, a duo project with Riitta Huttunen, this 2007 release pushes the boundaries of their exploration of Karelian folk music with a stronger, more contemporary trio project, joined by Karelian multi-instrumentalist Jari Lappalainen.
 Fel es Egesz (2 CD set) - Transsylvanians $temp out of stock-19.99 (cdRoots# wp-trans06)
Fél es Ègesz is the 6th CD by this powerful Hungarian roots'n'rock band. They describe the 2 CD set as 'Hungarian Speed Folk - two sides, different pulse frequencies- CD 1 is for stagedivers, CD 2 is for slowfolkers. Bastard arrangements of Bartók and Rimski-Korsakow, an excerpt from a Hungarian rock-opera, Jimi Hendrix' rock-classic 'Fire,' and the infamously legendary film-song "Gloomy Sunday." And the two greatest Hungarian poets of the 19th century, Arany János und Petöfi Sándor, are invited to the party. Tradition revitalised with the power of rock and the freedom of punk.'
