"Accordeonist Didier Laloy chooses fellow member of Panta Rhei - Pascal Chardome, on guitar and piano - to work with on his solo albums and he also plays a prominent part in the album by fiddler and sometime piper, Luc Pilartz. Percussionist Frédéric Malempré is also present on this and on Didier's albums. Luc is a very interesting fiddler and he has come up with a really engaging album. The subtitle of his album is Violon Populaire en Wallonie, but in fact it is much broader then this in content and execution. Most of his repertoire here is drawn from the early 19th-century manuscript of a labourer and musician, François-Joseph Jamin, and it sounds as though this Walloon had access to British, French, Swedish and even Hungarian tunes. Luc uses his considerable technique to emphasise the stylistic differences he encounters in his training. He sounds like a violinist with a secure classical training, but who is a folk fiddler at heart. Didier's albums are his own compositions. S-Tres sees the trio from Panta Rhei combining cleverly on some well-arranged pieces written by Didier. Sometimes there is the feeling that they are being too clever and one is left wondering how they managed to create a particular acoustic effect rather than actually listening to the music, but there are some very powerful, adventurous performances amongst them. This is a double CD and the second in the pair offers a 10-track suite trying to tell the story of a tragedy at a fairground, through the different moods of each piece, before offering four remixes of tracks from the first CD." - fRoots |
