Valdis Muktupavels
Muktukokles / Tradicionalas Kokles (Upe, Latvia)
$19.99

A unique 2 CD set by the acknowledged master of the Latvia zither or psaltry called kokle, and strangely, his first solo recorded work! And it is an adventure...

The first CD is Muktukokles, a set of original tunes composed by Valdis that explores the possibilities of the instrument, in solo and small ensemble arrangements that are both very contemporary and yet deeply mystical and ancient sounding. Valdis also shows his fascination for the singing technique of throat singing, that while having no firm historical root in Latvia, seems to have a logical connection to the music.

Listen:
A Prussian wedding song
Deer voices

The second CD is Tradicionalas Kokles and here Valdis presents the truly traditional music from the Kurzeme and Latgale districts of Latvia, the most ancient styles and songs, again in solo settings or with a small, traditional ensemble.

Listen:
The Augškojenieku polka
A Branche Lime-Tree Has Grown

The details from the record label:
The first solo record by the most eminent Latvian ethnomusicologist, composer and multi-instrumentalist is an ode to the kokle or box zither, a traditional Latvian folk instrument. It's a double CD. MUKTUKOKLES, the first CD, consists of original tracks by Valdis Muktupavels. The second CD - TRADICIONALAS KOKLES (Traditional Box Zithers) - contains authentic kokle melodies from the Kurzeme and Latgale districts of Latvia.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
