Reviewed in RootsWorld:
Mostar Sevdah Reunion was born in 1993 in the flames of the Bosnian conflict. The sextet rose phoenix-like out of that conflagration to become one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most popular bands. With fine musicianship and well-crafted arrangements, they put a subtly modern blush on old Yugoslavian and Roma songs. A Secret Gate was originally released in 2003, but this re-release makes it available in North America for the first time. The songs here are smooth and danceable, with a few moody ballads thrown in for variety. There’s a little country/western brushed snare in the background of "Oj Djevojko Pod Brdom (Hey Girl)." "Okreni Se Niz Djul Bašc'u (Turn Around in the Rose Garden)" is a love song of such longing, it makes you ache to listen to it. Mustafa Šantic'’s mournful clarinet caresses the spaces between the words. Mišo Petrovic' on guitar and Nedjo Kovacevic' on violin add some snazzy gypsy jazz to "Nema Ljepše Cure Od Malene Djule (There is No Prettier Girl than Little Djula)."... - Peggy Latkovitch

More info:
Out of the Balkan's tumultuous years of war and political turmoil comes a band of authentic energy and tradition. Sometimes called the "blues of the Balkans," Sevdalinka (Sevdah) is an urban musicial genre first introduced to Bosnia during Ottoman times and has now been reinvented by these formative ambassadors. On this recording released for the first time in North America, one can hear aspects of dervish chant and local kolos (circle dance) within the funky driving rhythms, gentle solos, and longing lyrics that evoke comparisons with Cesaria Evor's Cape Verdean mourna. Virtuosic and startling, these performances call upon their celebration of life, as if to rejoice in their individual and collective victory over a deeply mournful past.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
