Talik- Norway

Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.

ta:lik`s purpose is to make Norwegian traditional music available on CD. They specialize in quality releases of archive recordings by old master fiddlers, such as Ola Bøe, Olav Moe, Haldor Røyne, Harald Fylken, Sigurd Eldegard, Ola Grihamar and Klaus Sande.
In 2003 they released a new recording of the winner of Landskappleiken 2002 (The Norwegian Championship) , Jan Beitohaugen Granli (hardangerfiddle) and a new recording of Marit Mattisgard, one of Norways finest traditional singers. These are our first presentations from the catalog.
In Norway, traditional music is often linked to National Romanticism and its visual esthetics; including traditional costumes, rose painting and so on. Through contemporary cover designs ta:lik wants to state that traditional music belongs to the present as well as the past, and does not always have to be paired with so-called traditional esthetics.

 Jarnnetter - Camilla Granlien Band $15.99 (cdRoots# talik-027)
Two great poets from Lom: Tor Jonsson (19161951) and Olav Aukrust (18831929). Though their views of rural life were far apart, it held a great influence on them both. Tor Jonsson faced much hardship in his youth and came to be critical of the closely-knit rural society, while Olav Aukrust, a champion of religious and national causes, held a more positive view of rural communities, people and lifestyles. Differences notwithstanding, it is obvious from the titles and form of their poems that both drew inspiration from traditional music. We have set some of their poems to traditional tunes both old and recent, and included a few songs they might have heard at home.

The Løndal style represents a unique branch of Norwegian traditional music, distinguished by what Tuddal writer O.J. Rui called "its supple, clean playing style and effortless fingerings." Numerous fiddlers have seen the Løndal style as an ideal and emulated its characteristic, lyrical sound. There's hardly a fiddler in Telemark that hasn't been influenced by the Løndal style, and this is true for a number of other districts as well.

Sudan Dudanoffers broadside ballads, comic ballads, lullabies and other traditional songs that they have subtitled "folk songs, terribly sad songs of lost love, bitter tears and a rambling father," in a unique and ultimately charming set of duets.
 Blå september - Aslak O. Brimi og Hans W. Brimi $16.99 (cdRoots# talik-23)
Says Brimi the younger: 'My grandfather was regarded as a nice fellow by those who knew him. He had many close friends nationwide among people interested in folk music. The music and everything connected with it, was an important part of his life. I myself did not know Hans W. Brimi as a concert musician or a great fiddler. I started to play the fiddle too late for that, and when I got interested in earnest, he had put the fiddle on the shelf. I am sorry to admit never to have played with him. But there is a host of nice memories. To me he was Grandfather Brimi, the one who kept the kids on a straight line when we visited the farm. To me he will always be the Old Man with the wool cap put askew, or the one lying comfortably on the sofa in the old farm house. No one snored louder than Grandfather.'
Underlege makter - Henning Andersen with Marit Mattisgard $17.99 (cdRoots# talik-24)

For people here in Norway the church bells have been a sound and safe landmark for over a thousand years. Over the years they have served various purposes but primarily have been God's voice here on earth. They have summoned the congregation to church service, baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals. Gradually they gained other duties than the sacral as they were used to warn of war and mobilisation, accidents and catastrophes. The bells marked the passing hours, the start and end of the working day and the commencement of church holidays when tired bodies could rest."

 Lukkeleg vaking - Tindra $16.99 (cdRoots# talik-31)
This trio of women is rooted in traditional Norwegian folklore, but their performance is so much more. Without resorting to much more than the basic trio of voices, accordion and fiddle, with minimal vocal contributions from Aasmund Nordstoga and from Gabriel Fliflet, whose influence is clear in the playful and surprising approach they take to the simplest of arrangements - the accordion occasionally sputters, the fiddle moves from sweet to menacing and the voices turn from airy to earthy on the turn of a dime. Far from 'experimental,' these changes are natural, personal touches one should expect from folk music. This is a remarkable debut for a unique Norwegian trio.
