Offical bio from the record label:
Jean Émilien's first musical initiation came from his grandfather, who was buryed with a jejy vaotavo (a kind of mandoline). Passionate music lover, he was fascinated by the kabosse (the traditional four strings malagasy guitar) that he learnt during holydays. He discovered harmonica with a musician who accompanied pupils of his father, playing malagasy tunes.

Rhythms from Madagascar are various (salegy, jejy, sarang, vaqu'sauv, basésé ). Jean Émilien's music is inspired by a rhythm called rija, originaly played without instruments. The rhythm is now given by the kabosse, the accordion and footbeat. His immoderate taste for music upset his father who broke one day the kabosse on the head of his son. This incident led to his flight from the family house and his musical vocation.

In 1982, a taxi driver fascinated by his music drove him to Antananarivo in order to record his songs at the National Radio. They became soon popular hymns, used as radio broadcast soundtracks. 1989, he recorded his first album "Hey Madagascar" in Paris, a mix with Séga (a rhythm from the Réunion island) and different rhythms from Madagascar, followed a few years later by a second album, "Ezaka". His bright voice, his way of using harmonica as a melodic and also as a rhythmic instrument and his personal kabosse style (he added a fifth bass string on his instrument) impressed the audience. His particular voice and his art of playing various instruments at the same time make of him a real orchestra. He won the gold medal at the "Hohner 91" harmonica competion in Detroit, and was compared to Robert Johnson, the father of the blues, reference of John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
