Kandia Kouyate
Biriko
$17.99
I try not to rave to much in these little descritpions, but sometimes it's just inevitable. This is a superb singer from Mali, a woman of incredible strength and depth, and here she is joined by a phenomenal crew of musicians (on kora, ngoni, fiddle, accordion, percussion, flutes, balafon). It's simply one of the best recordings of this type released in a while. - CF
But don't take my word for it, listen to a few of these short samples.

From the pages of fROOTS magazine Kandia Kouyate is an artist who simply demands respect. Listen to her voice for only a minute, and you'll understand why people have surrendered possessions, heart and soul upon hearing it. You'll also understand why Kandia has been attributed with mystic powers. Mali may be full of thunder-voiced females, but they fade into oblivion in the presence of Kandia's commanding alto. The album opens with a glistening guitar solo by the acclaimed Djelimady Tounkara (you may want to purchase the disc just for this minute of artistic perfection), and once he's settled into a steady riff, Kandia enters with a blast. Her finely crafted phrases exude an authority that makes you shiver. Spellbound after only a minute of listening - I can only think of few artists who are capable of making such an impact. Biriko is Kandia's eagerly awaited second album (outside Mali), and it is a more than worthy sequel to its highly acclaimed predecessor. Like so many other African artists, she has chosen the acoustic route this time. The subtle instrumentation and understated production help her voice to even greater prominence and lend the album an enigmatic atmosphere. I've tried, but couldn't find a single flaw on this album. She has solicited the cream of Malian musicians to provide instrumental accompaniment - hence it's tight and inspired. The songs are engaging and varied. The lyrics are profound - according to liner notes and raving statements by Maninka speakers. You've guessed my verdict. Get up and get it before someone else snatches the last copy before you! - Katharina Lobeck |

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
