The reocrd label says:
When a man loves a woman but the woman is not good, when a singer starts to sing this story but makes fun of the man and when the music is Kenya's national benga beat but comes with classic bantu interlocking not only of tremendous tremolo guitars but of all instruments, then it is Kakai Kilonzo with his Kilimambogo Brothers band from Kamba in Kenya. Recorded in Nairobi between 1983 and 86 and released on 7" singles, the cool and relaxed songs of "Best Of Kakai Volume One" not only were major hits in Kenya but are of timeless beauty and crystalline perfection. Kakai Kilonzo has created little gems of African pop by mixing the gossips of ironic urban love stories with his version of benga rooted deeply in traditional Kamba music and its dance rhythms. His singing in Swahili made his clever lyrics to be understood in the whole of Kenya and East Africa. In the nineteen-eighties Kakai's benga music was the darling also of John Peel who used to play the "Kilimambogo Brothers" quite often on his radio show. Sadly Kakai Kilonzo has passed away in 1987. His widow Jane has compiled the "Best Of Kakai Volume One" (and "Two"!). The CD was mastered from the original tapes and is of surprising sound quality.
"...Not only are they all well remastered from the original tapes, but the tracks themselves represent a glorious cross-section and variety of one of Africa's greatest pop musics, from one of the best bands of the genre - full of imaginative arrangements, with snappy breakdowns almost to the point of being organic live dub at some points. As it approaches the mid-term fade, Monica for example will make your brain boil with pure pleasure. Just one pairing, Baba Mkwe Pts 1&2, duplicates the pam LP. Love this all to death, and here's hoping that it starts the ball rolling for considerable benga mania. Sadly, Kakai Kilonzo passed away in 1987, but this is a great memorial. Can't wait for Volume 2!" - Ian Anderson, fROOTS

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
