Radical Mestizo (Live)
$16.99

A live one from this 'radical' Scotland-based band, recorded the Teatro de La Cuidad in Mexico City, Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow, The Second Story Nightclub in Bloomington Indiana, and Glenuig Hall in Scotland.

the band says:
We had a lot of fun last year and now you can hear the proof! We are glad to announce the release of our much requested and long awaited Shooglenifty Live album –- Radical Mestizo.

We successfully launched the album at our gig in Glasgow at Carling Academy on Sunday 23rd January. It was good to be back at Celtic Connections and great to see so many old friends.

The album consists of ten tracks variously recorded at Teatro de La Cuidad in Mexico City as part of the Festivale Internationale, Cumbre Tajin adjacent to the ancient Totanec city during the Spring Festival, Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow during Celtic Connections Festival, The Second Story Nightclub in Bloomington Indiana, and last but certainly not least, Glenuig Hall.

Track List:

The following is extracted from our album notes:

She’s in the Attic. There is a lengthy and very amusing anecdote associated with this tune which I’m sure Angus will let you in on at some time. Hey Goat was inspired by a cultural misunderstanding involving an herbivorous ovine quadruped in the mountainous borders of Galicia and Portugal. Maybe it was a sheep. We’re still not sure……

Glenuig Hall was the first ever tune written by Luke in Australia. Several mantles have been laid on it since then but until James’ suggestion of paying homage to the wonderful venue in Moidart, nothing had really stuck. The Wrong Box……This can happen sometimes.

Arms Dealer’s Daughter written in Spain, the title refers back to an earlier encounter in the band’s history, late one night in Frankie Delgado’s wonderful bar “Ca Beleño”, in Oviedo, Asturias. Gracias Frankie, Fonsu Mielgo, families and friends at the bar for all of those good times, long may they continue. Aye Right is one of those lovely double positives that means a negative when said with an authentic enough Scottish accent and sarcasm.

The Nordal Rumba Like the Television, the Telephone, Tar macadam, the Macintosh, Penicillin, Whisky and Tequila the Scots also invented the Rumba.

Carboni’s Farewell was half written in the front seat of an ancient Holden Kingswood with erratic air-con on the way back from a terrible gig in Albury, Victoria, Australia. The second half was written at the wheel of Luke’s first chariot, a 1972 Peugeot 504. The second tune in the set refers to a piece of advice given by an irate American tourist to some enthusiastic party animals in Ireland – “Beware the anger of the Patient Man…..”

Delighted. She came from Seville. She came from Seville. She came from Seville. She came from Seville. In An-da-lu-thia. In An-da-lu-thia. In An-da-lu-thia. She said she was Delighted, Delight-ed, De-light-ed. If all the lights go out in Glenuig hall when it’s full of people dancing to Delighted do they make a sound? There’s a bit of a Zen koan for you. Have another listen. Only then may you achieve enlightenment, Oh Grasshopper.

Schumann’s Leap was inspired by a photograph of the East German Border Guard, Frans Conrad Schumann’s leap over the Barbed wire into West Berlin

Heading West. Everybody from Elves to Angus seems to head west in order to get home and everybody can get home if they head west for long enough. Unless they live south that is. This was recorded in our home from home out west in the legendary hall in Glenuig.

A Fistful of Euro languished nameless for a long time, until Luke came up with the inspired title, musical inspiration coming courtesy of an imaginary jam between Sergio Leone and Eric Satie. The New Rat #6 was the sixth tune written after a tour of Australia and “The Rat”, by Gunter Grass, graces the bookshelves of Bleep and Booster’s studio.

Scraping the Barrel is what you call something when you have title writing block. Fielding’s Possum entered Fielding’s bedroom through the chimney and died of starvation before the house-sitter (Luke) found him a few days later. Take the Tunnel is only rarely good advice in Sydney. This was the last tune of the last gig in America before heading off to Mexico the next day. We were pretty excited…

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
