Tsuumi
Avoin Kenttä (Open Field)
$17.99
A powerful mixture of folk roots and high theater come together in this creative musical ensemble, part of a larger Finnish dance theater production company of the same name. The company produces a number of performances every year in Finalnd, including the series, Folklore Show, which runs in Helsinki 4 - 5 nights a week during the summer season. In addition to this the group produces two to four new dance pieces each year, choreographed and directed by visiting professionals from different fields of dance.
The band says "The Folklore Show lies in more traditional folk dance and music while the other productions take a fresher and more experimental viewpoint. Tsuumi modernizes Finnish folk dance; it is a new boundary-breaking, refreshing force where uncompromised skill comes together with sentimentality and humor."

"Tsuumi is a dance group, Helsinki-based but deriving a substantial proportion of its personnel and approach from the evolution from folk-dance into classy choreography that has happened in Kaustinen with the group Ottoset and the generations it has spawned. The Tsuumi CD comprises music made for various productions by Tsuumi's band, using fiddles, viola, nyckelharpa, accordion, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonium, piano, percussion and double bass, augmented by guests as the production required.
Much of the composition is by the band's accordionist Hannu Kella, a very fine musician in the grand new Finnish tradition of mellifluous accordion subtlety. Also compositional contributors and band members, though they evidently didn't make it to the photo session, are Frigg's Antti and Esko Järvelä. (Esko is, incidentally, the son of JPP's Mauno Järvelä). Replete with syncopation and gutsy drive, and the dazzling instrumental command that's a given with the Finnish roots new-wave, the music swirls, pauses, leaps off again, echoing the changes that came about in Finnish folk dance rooted music with JPP but expanding the range of textures and instrumentation." - Andrew Cronshaw, fRoots |

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
