"... Their ability to fuse psychedelic rock, Eastern-European folk influences and shamanist tradition is stunning. The ingredients of this rich mixture are tribal percussion, pagan flutes, shamanist trance rock, ambient soundscapes, bizarre Hungarian voices harmonising with burning guitar leads; it's all in there. The music of Korai Öröm is overwhelming, visionary and at the same time humane, natural, mindexpanding... real earth psychedelics." - CROHINGA WELL (Belgium)

Outlaws of the City -Nagyvárosi bujdosók - Ferenc Kiss - 12.99
The Outlaws of the City is a thematic or as it is nowadays called a concept album. In the songs, lyrics and performance I used a lot from what I have learnt in the past 25 years about folk cultures, and the way we can use them today. The prosaic supplements, which I call texts that accompany the songs, cannot be sung, but they all relate, at some places closely, at others loosely, to the imagery of the songs. They make each other complete. They are about me, and my loved ones, and about those who can never be loved. Memories about my generation and the hiding. My childhood, and school, fears, the recognition and the fire, music and water, the respect of traditions and rebellion, landscapes and people, tales and travels, the myth and bureaucracy, duty and love, self destruction and attachments, home and the native land, the rustling of skirts, our fate, the child's eyes, the smell of books, the wings of freedom and of course happiness, joy, wine and dance, and the language of the Bible and the streets –

Oytsres (Treasures). Klezmer Music 1908-1996. R.Ottens, J.Rubin - various - 13.99
In RootsWorld, Stacy Philips wrote: "In this period of rediscovery, revitalization and reinterpretation of music of the Jewish people of pre-Holocaust Europe, occasional infusions from the source help keep the music centered. In this latest klezmer anthology, producers Joel Rubin and Rita Ottens have included six rare examples of pre-World War I recordings from Europe. These include a couple of pieces from the Euro-Yiddish theater that have some melodic relationship (but not in presentation) to klezmer. Additionally there are two fascinating pieces by the State Ensemble for Jewish Folk Music of the Ukraine recorded in 1937 and 1939, along with one example of an obscure offshoot of the klezmer tradition, that of the Chassidic community in Israel. It will be very instructive to all fans of klezmer to compare the playing styles of these with that of musicians who recorded in America between the world wars. The greats of the first generation emigres to the United States are also here: Naftule Brandwine (fabulous,

Geej - El Hadj N'Diaye - 15.99
Songlines describes this Senegalese singer's work as having a "gripping blend of haunting melodies, floating guitars and inspired lyrics." El Hadj brings together far-flung strands of Senegalese tradition and identity in an unique musical career. His songs are informed by a deep knowledge of and compassion for those who are suffering and neglected in Africa, and he writes with a literary flair born of his own experience as an author and actor. From its most tender whisper to its most anguished gut cry, the voice of El Hadj is a marvel. This is mostly a gentle acoustic album, a subtle but powerful letter from Senegal to the world. Highly recommended.

China: Album of the Prunus Hermitage - Chen Leiji - 12.99
The record label says: Chen Leiji performs solo qin zither recordings from the Zhucheng school (Shandong, N.E. China). The music from the Prunus Hermitage was written in 1931 and the collection of compositions heard here is the last remaining example of this unique style. During the Cultural Revolution, the qin was banned as an 'aristocratic' instrument. Leiji began to study the instrument with Master Gong Yi at age 9 and is now considered the instrument's leading exponent. Also trained in western classical music, Leiji contributes to the rebirth of this thousand-year-old instrument by taking part in the creation of contemporary classical works such as the concerto for instrument of silence written for him in 1996 by Chen Qigang, and by performing with Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam.

The members of InChanto share a common passion for ancient and traditional music, developing a personal repertoire, inspired by their place of origin: Tuscany, a deeply rooted, culture, and also a land receptive to other cultures that have been absorbed and interwoven into the Tuscan sensibility. These songs do not come from formal research or philosophy, but from the desire to offer original music, rooted both in European folk, and in the musical and literary culture of the Italian Renaissance. Singing we come down the mountains - Patara Georgika - 13.99
Traditional Songs of Georgia from the oral tradition. This polyphonic music has been taught and handed down from one generation to the next one without notes, simply by ear. The table songs, wedding songs, round dance songs, dance songs for individual and pair dances as well as comical songs are rather different in their music structure; the regional styles, however, are also very different in their character and differentiation of voices. In general, all these songs have the polyphonic or three-part singing in common. The overtones are usually, according to tradition, performed by soloists, with one of them, most frequently the second voice, starting singing. The soloists are a counterpart to the group of banebi who uniformly perform the third voice....

The 5 singers come from one single village, Kitskhi in the Imereti region in West Georgia. Odila performs in the traditional manner: The first and second voice (which often introduces the song) is executed by a soloist, the third voice (bani in Georgian) normally by the group of the other singers in unison, in some cases also by a soloist. Some songs are accompanied by Chonguri (stringed instrument) and doli (drum).

Suonato coi piedi! - Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia - 14.99
Virtually unknown in Italy, the traditional music of Quebec is a kind of mélange of Scot-Irish music with French songs. Alongside the fiddle, mandolin, guitar and piano, its typical instruments are the melodeon, the oldest kind of accordion, which is still found in Quebec and Louisiana, and... the musicians' feet, which make for a powerful rhythmic background in wild dances. Andrea Capezzuoli, who has always been very fond of this music, has collected a handful of classics of this genre and made a fizzy but at the same time accurate CD despite what its title would suggest (an old Italian refrain says that you do bad if you do using your feet).

His first album, which is now being re-released here, is mostly made up of upbeat songs that electrify a variety of regional styles. The accompanying translated lyrics show Koite to be a songwriter that takes on weightier subjects than the usual vacuous party fare. The songs don't translate easily, resembling fables at times, but there is no mistaking the message of his hit, "Cigarette A Bana (The Cigarette is Finished)." Koite's brisk, breezy songs layer call-and-response singing over a seamless mix of African percussion and Western instruments. His academic training shows up most notably in his sophisticated arrangements, which continually change textures, keeping his songs as appealing to the head as the feet.' - Marty Lipp, RootsWorld

Vital - Fernando Otero - 12.99
Argentine pianist, composer and bandleader Fernando Otero's new album for World Village, Vital, is a meditative yet emotionally refractive set of eleven modern chamber music pieces, redolent of new-style tango, twentieth century atonality, sharp-edged downtown jazz, and other sounds Otero picked up at home and on his travels. The opening duet for piano and violin, "Nocturno," is a limping waltz that appears to depict an insomniac's midnight musings; it leads seamlessly into two succeeding yet unrelated movements. "Siderata," scored for six players including a bandonéon, Argentina's emblematic squeezebox, is an exercise in stillness, like the uneasy peace that so often precedes a difficult decision. "La Abundancia," another duet, is roundly, ripely melodic; but the wryly titled "Reforma Mental" is scored for eight players and from its opening keyboard arpeggios, depicts a dialogue between voices in conflict, with scampering piano runs periodically overwhelmed by groaning, overbearing horns. Between them, the violin and bandonéon achieve a small universe of sonic color on "Noche Illuminata," while "Fin de Revision" contradicts its title by continuing to mutate and evolve until the final, wheezing exhalation. Listen

"Forty years after the music's heyday the samba/bossa nova legacy and off-shoots are kept alive through such fusion artists as Rita Ribeiro and Da Lata, and through the original pioneers' progeny such as Bebel Gilberto, the Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, and Moreno Veloso. Very few artists, however, have remained as steadfastly devoted to the music's original lounge style as Rosa Passos, her timeless approach preserving the tradition while expanding on it. Inspired by João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Passos started making a name for herself in the early Seventies. Several decades later she seems to be Brazil's best-kept secret. " - RootsWorld

Down In Dublin - Michael Hurley - 13.99
The king of snock, a master of overstated, under-rated, country influenced songwriting is like no one else on the planet, and these sessions from ireland are no exception. Dark, funny, disturbing and romantic, often simultaneously, Hurley is one of the few people out there who merits the accolade of 'one of a kind.'

The Jig Is Up - Peter Stampfel and the Bottlecaps - 13.99
H.M. Rounder Peter Stampfel is back again, in a series of recordings made 1989–1999 with a host of different musicians, but all pulled together by his insatiable, exploratory lust for good songs, odd ideas and bizarre juxtapositions (and a Quicktime video clip, too!).

Kchaba - Hijas Del Sol - 12.99
The third album by the singing duo Hijas del Sol is a very cheerful and 'African' album, even though it has more songs in Spanish than any other. Exceptional musicians from Equatorial Guinea like Pablo Tarifa, David Owono, Alex Ikot and Chery Malé seek out the traditional musical base of their home region (Sibeba), then open up to others styles from the African continent and Europe. They run from roots to pop, never losing the core sound of two great voices in harmony.

¡Saba Saba! - Milquinhento '1500' and Conjunto Popombo De Nampula and Conjunto Nimala - 12.99
recorded live in a local cinema and while different in instrumentation, they share a stripped down scratch band sound. Mil-Quinhento '1500' furiously strums a zither called a pankwe, a flat board with a tin can and a gourd for resonators. The band adds shakers, a bell-toned brake shoe, voices and nlapa, a tea chest with a gut string much like a wash tub bass. What makes Conjunto Popombo distinctive is the vocal work. A rapid fire call and response between the singers overlaps the syllables until they seem to be a single, unsingable torrent notes.

A collection of songs, including 4 in English, some old and some new, plus some previously unreleased. All are new recordings made in Paris in 2001. The album is all acoustic.

Hungarian new music quartet plays unique compositions from folk roots.

Outra Vida - Joao Afonso - 11.99
Portuguese-via-Mozambique artist João Afonso's 2006 release is as warm and occasionally quirky as what I have come to expect from this songwriter and singer. This one has some more Afro-pop inferences than previously, and it is rhythmically solid while still holding on to the subtle and sweet tone that is Afonso's trademark. Comes in a a small hard-cover book, with charming drawings, and lyrics in Portuguese, with Spanish translation.

Baile de libelulas - La Bruja Gata - 12.99
The Dragonfly Dance this band does moves carefully through a compositional bent a la Maria Kalaniemi (who accordionist Javier Palancar can compete with on every level of expertise!), the spirited energy of Kepa Junkera, touches of eastern European darkness and an overarching sense of sheer ebullience. The accordion dominates in this unique Spanish band, driven by percussion, bass and mandola, colored by zanfona, flutes, dulzaina, violin, clarinet and bass clarinet.

Suenos Sencillos - Pablo Guerrero - 12.99
"Guerrero's thirteenth Spanish release. Some listeners may recognize his inimitable, understated baritone from A Maria Teresa Vera (Intuition, 1999), the superb tribute to the grand Cuban singer-songwriter. The accompaniment is sparse (acoustic guitar, bass and backing female voices), putting his pensive lyricism up front, a masterful illustration of the artistic virtues of less-is-more. Guerrero is a musician who has made a conscious choice to live at the margins of a music industry whose modus operandi is to homogenize everything in its grasp. Spanish speakers will appreciate the inclusion of the original lyrics. They emanate from the soul of a poet deeply concerned with the relations of power that deform community life on the planet. Guerrero's unassuming philosophical reflections upon mundane experience acknowledge the precious, fleeting character of human existence, the delight to be taken in everyday social relations, and the healing powers of love and a famously unfettered imagination. In the Spanish double-pun on his name, this singer continues to pablar y guerrear, to testify and to fight for dreams whose simplicity speaks the language of freedom." - RootsWorld

Jarnnetter - Camilla Granlien Band - 15.99
Two great poets from Lom: Tor Jonsson (1916–1951) and Olav Aukrust (1883–1929). Though their views of rural life were far apart, it held a great influence on them both. Tor Jonsson faced much hardship in his youth and came to be critical of the closely-knit rural society, while Olav Aukrust, a champion of religious and national causes, held a more positive view of rural communities, people and lifestyles. Differences notwithstanding, it is obvious from the titles and form of their poems that both drew inspiration from traditional music. We have set some of their poems to traditional tunes both old and recent, and included a few songs they might have heard at home.

Scattering Stars Like Dust - Kayhan Kalhor - 14.99
"Kayhan Kalhor is a native Iranian who now lives in NYC. He is a virtuoso player of the kamancheh, the so-called spike fiddle of Asia. It is played while seated cross legged on the ground, and held and bowed cello style. It has four strings and is about the length of a violin though the body is much smaller, resembling that of an nineteenth century gourd banjo. In the twentieth century the European violin began to replace the kamancheh, but it has begun to experience a revival, due, in part, to great players like Kalhor. Besides an extensive background in Iranian classical and folk music, Kalhor studied Western art music in Italy and Canada and, in this album, applies some classical techniques to the "traditional" art music of his native country. These include occasional vibrato, quadruple time, staccato phrased passages, and general bravura passages meant to impress. His short, fast bowings are extraordinary, reminding me of the "butterfly" bowings of South Indian violinists like L. Shankar. He coaxes all manner of sounds from the kamancheh that I have not heard before." - RootsWorld

Arshile Gorky - various Artists - 12.99
A CD presenting music from the painter Arshile Gorky's Armenian homeland. This historic region, especially Gorky's birth village of Khorkum, near the great Lake Van, was often colorfully described by Gorky as rich in agriculture, much of which he depicted in images of the Armenian plow, orchards, gardens and wheat fields. The same symbols were frequently reflected in folk songs of the region. Hear these songs, including one often danced by Gorky himself, played on authentic period instruments dating back to the 16th century, masterfully performed by the most renowned Armenian musicians including duduk virtuoso Djivan Gasparyan, udist, Richard A. Hagopian, The Shoghaken Ensemble and others. The 12-page booklet includes extensive notes about the music with English translations of the songs, Gorky's biography and photos of Gorky at work.

Eskil Romme (Denmark) plays accordion, saxophone and pipes. Erling Olsen (Denmark) is a fiddler in the traditional Nordic style.

Sell Out - The Who - 10.99
OK, why the hell is this in here? One of the 'proprietor's perogatives,' I guess. I found one of my suppliers selling a very reasonably priced edition of what I consder to be one of the 5 best rock records ever made. It was a gem, and this remastered version brings out all its quirks. There are a bunch of bonus tracks, but I don't listen to the out-takes. The core is the madness of their music and advertising parodies, and it's all you need!

Alpha - Alpcologne - 13.99
Probably a totally new concept to you, as it is to me: 3 alphorns and vocals. The concept of the band arises from its unusual instrumentation. The warm, rich sound of the 4-meter-long traditional instruments encounters the expressiveness and melodic flexibility of the voice. Like the explorers of past centuries, Alpcologne can experiment with its own sound - playing Folk, Ska, Tango, Mambo, Cajun, Bluegrass, and Oriental music; original compositions or reinterpretations. Unique, to say the least!

Rising Road - John Jones - 13.99
With seven traditional songs, four written by John, and one from the Oysterband vaults, Jones' first solo outing features Seth Lakeman (tenor guitar, fiddle, vocal), Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, piano, vocal), former Oysterman Ian Kearey (banjo-dulcimer), Rowan Godel (vocal), Sophie Walsh (harp) and Francois Deville (pedal steel) as well as homeboys Dil Davies (drums), Alan Prosser (guitars) and producer Al Scott. Listen

Re-covers - Albert Kuvezin and Yat-Kha - 13.99
OK, it had to happen, and Tuvan singer, electric guitarist and experimentalist Kuvezin is certainly the one to do it: Tuvan rooted recovers of pop and country 'hits' (although some here fall into the category of minor). So Led Zepellin's "When The Levee Breaks" gets an acid-rock throat-singing treatment to entrancing if somewhat unsettling results side by side with music from Kratfwerk, Motorhead, Hank Williams, Iron Butterfly, Paul Mauriat, Captain Beefheart ("Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles" is one of the gems of the set!), Joy Division and a few Central Asian hit-makers as well. Irresistible fun, and occasioanlly brilliant. (This is the 2006 US release)

Mesk Elil - Souad Massi - 12.99
2005 release by the much-reviewed Algerian songwriter and singer. With a larger band including musicians from Europe and Africa (Djely Moussa Kouyate from Salif Keita's band and rising star Daby Touré), she is pulling for that international stardom so often sought after and rarely achieved.

self titled - Apparatschik - 10.99
They play 'Volxmusik' - from polkas and tangos to sentimental lovesongs. With accordeon and the balalaika, Apparatschik offers a rugged kind of dance music: energetic and fast, but sometimes melancholy, as well. True Russian grit.

The Charm of Chamame - Chango Spasiuk - 10.99
The passionate accordion player and composer Chango Spasiuk transforms the Chamamé, a rural dance music, into an highly elaborated artform presented mainly in concert settings, in much the same way Astor Piazzolla added jazz elements and a classical note to the Tango.

from heaven into hell - Revelling Crooks - 10.99
They call it klezmer-country-balkan-folk but the genres hardly do justice to this band of accordion, banjo, mandolin, violin, guitar, bass and drums, as they romp through folk-roots, rock, ska and Balkan sounds with reckless abandon.

Il senso della Vita (The meaning of life) - Folkabbestia - 10.99
In the grand tradition of folk rock and acoustic madness that has swept Italy in the last decade, Folkabbestia certainly are destined to lead rather than follow. This six-piece ensemble rocks, roars, and rollicks their way through a traditional repetoire with little sense of decency or decorum, and the better they are for it! You'll hear tarantella, ska, jazz, rock and hybrids yet invented.
