Peter Puma Hedlund is considered Sweden's leading traditional player of the modern chromatic nyckelharpa, twice the winner of the title of World Champion, in 1992 and 2000. This recording was made in 2001 at Windmill Studios, Sergeantsville, NJ, and presents a series of solo tunes, both traditional and newly composed (many by Peter himself), unencumbered by other instruments or arrangements, just pure keyed-fiddle playing by an excellent musician in an excellent aural space.

Peters' primary instrument is the nyckelharpa, an instrument unique to Sweden, with deep roots in Upland, the province just north of Stockholm. He is very proud to have had the late Eric Sahlstöm as his mentor, one of Sweden's finest musical virtuosos.
His earliest efforts with the nyckelharpa, was under the supervision of Mats Kuoppala (now Liljeholm). They parted in the early 70s, and Peter then turned to Eric Sahlström and his fantastic playing style. He attributes most of his current personal musical expression to the lessons learned while playing in the company of Eric.
Peter offered his first music workshop in 1973, and with that became more serious about his own playing. He feels it´s very special to help others understand what folk music is all about. Playing together, having fun and enjoying musical camaraderie. It´s probably the only type of music where rank beginners can play with old masters as well as the current idols in a completely natural and relaxed setting. "Puma" has played with and enjoyed musicians from many different cultures and styles. People like Benny Andersson (ABBA), Alice Babs (who sang with Duke Ellington), Viksta-Lasse (a legendary Uplandic fiddle player born in 1897), and many others. He has also played as a soloist with the Swedish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Although his name is Peter Hedlund, he's been called Puma since he was a kid. He has played the fiddle since 1966, the nyckelharpa since 1971 and in 1975 he earned the title "Riksspelman," or "Fiddler of the Realm". Nyckelharpa World Champion , two times, is another title he can put on his business card. Before teaching and performing music took over his life completely, he was a construction worker, later a site manager. His wife, Karin, is also a very accomplished musician. She is a music teacher, plays recorder and is also a Riksspelman on the fiddle. They have two sons, Mathias and Jonas. Both musicians, taking lessons at a local music school.
