Founded in 2002, Shtreiml, named for the traditional furry hat worn by Chassidic Jews, blends klezmer, gypsy and jazz to create a vibrant sound that is at once Eastern European Folk Music and down-home Blues. Shtreiml's debut album, Harmonica Galitzianer , showcases bandleader Jason Rosenblatt's unique approach to playing the 10-hole diatonic harmonica or "blues harp." Using recently devised techniques pioneered by harmonica master Howard Levy, Rosenblatt takes the instrument generally associated with the blues and fits it neatly into an Eastern European context. Along with Hip-hop klezmer guru Josh Dolgin and Yiddish folksong revivalist Abby Rosenblatt, the group has carefully researched old sheet music and vinyl recordings, in order to develop a repertoire that is at once old-time klezmer and fresh to the ears of even the most seasoned listener.
Shtreiml features Jason Rosenblatt (harmonica, piano), Josh Dolgin (accordion), Abby Rosenblatt (vocals), Ariel Harrod (bass), Thierry Arsenault (drums).
Jason Rosenblatt studied jazz piano composition at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary music in Ramat Hasharon, Israel. He is largely self taught on the harmonica, though he credits the work of Howard Levy as a major inspiration. In addition to his klezmer harmonica duties, Jason has had the opportunity to tour Europe, Israel and North America, with Israel's The Moshav Band. He has recorded with legendary Montreal singer Nanette Workman and is member of the KlezKanada faculty.
Ariel Harrod studied jazz bass at both Montreal's McGill Conservatory and Concordia University. He is most active on the Montreal Jazz scene with the 50's and 60's jazz quartet Groovin' Uncle Harris and can also be heard on stage and on CD with Kitchose Band, a promising young band in the true Quebecois tradition. Klezmer, the most recent hair in his bow, now satisfies his interest in the roots of traditional Jewish music.
Josh Dolgin (aka SoCalled), accordionist and phat beat maker, is a bright young star on the klezmer scene. He has performed with such luminaries as David Krakauer, Frank London and Susan Watts. His hip-hop release, entitled "A Hip-Hop Seder," has been hailed as "one of the most important works of Jewish music in years." His latest release album credits include "A Hip-Hop Khasene" and "David Krakauer: Live in Krakow" which have been on top of the European world music charts. In addition to his musical endeavors, Josh is an accomplished magician, filmmaker and photographer.
Thierry Arsenault, humanist, VW mechanic and amateur mycologist, is for the most part, a self-taught drummer. Thierry performs with a wide variety of acts on the Montreal scene, ranging from klezmer to blues to jazz. It was his deep love of Indian music, which led him to study tabla in Varanasi, India. Thierry has a degree in French literature from Universite de Montreal. One day he would like to live on a hill.
