Piirpauke: Sillat (Rockadillo Records ZENCD 2078)
"Sillat" means "Bridges" in Finnish. It is a fitting title to the latest CD by Finland’s World Music pioneers. The band Piirpauke started in the mid-Seventies as jazz musicians playing Finnish folk music. Later on, they continued to explore different styles of music from all over the world. The line-ups kept changing, and multi-instrumentalist Sakari Kukko has for years been the only remaining original member.
Sillat catches Piirpauke in a transition period: four of the tracks have been recorded with the previous line-up and featuring guests like Jukka Tolonen (guitar). The majority of tracks showcase the new edition of Piirpauke, featuring young classical piano virtuoso Joonas Ahonen on piano. At 18, Joonas was the youngest musician who recently got into the finals of Finland’s premier classical piano contest, named after Maj Lind. With Joonas on piano, Sakari can concentrate on his main instruments - saxophones and flutes. And with Senegalese percussionist Ismaila Sane still in the band, Piirpauke continues to fuse jazz, classical, folk and ethnic elements in totally unique style.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
