cd cover Faltriqueira
Efffecto (Resistencia)
$17.99

The Galician band's second release (2006) presents another interesting take on traditional sources, and on this one they expand beyond their home to other parts of Spain and the rest of Europe. Produced by Pascal Gaigne, who also contrubues guitar work, and backed by an ensemble of accordion, guitars, percussion, gaita (bagpipes), bass and harp, with occasional additions of horns, didjeridu, flutes and more, this quartet of female vocalists and panderitas proves it is deserving of the fame they have been developing around Europe since their 2002 debut.

Press release from the label:
Faltriqueira band represents the freshest in musical trends coming from traditional sources. Mixing polyphonic singing with percussion and acoustic instruments, Faltriqueira is an autonomous vocal project that shuns strict traditionalism and breathes new life into songs coming from different latitudes, not just from their native Galicia.Their artistic beginnings were with Orballo, a folkloric group from their hometown. They duly take up the traditional heritage of the tambourine-playing women singers, enhancing it with their youth, their naturalness and their good taste and bringing it closer to different musical styles from near and far.

They have collaborated on recordings and concerts with artists such as Luar na Lubre, Mike Oldfield, Oskorri, Kepa Junkera and Víctor Manuel, both before and after their own recording debut, which was released late in 2002 and was distributed throughout the world. That first album, Faltriqueira (Resistencia, 2002) garnered them a cover feature in the Folk Roots magazine and a widespread acceptance among specialized critics. It was therefore selected as one of the ten best albums of 2003 by World Music Charts Europe. Additionally, several tracks from the album were chosen for inclusion in compilations such as "Women's World Voices", "Femmes Celtes" and "Oriental Garden".

After some live appearances in the Iberian peninsula, the Bermuda islands and Namibia and after being recognized by festival audiences including those at Etnofestival 2005 in San Marino, Rock in Rio in Lisbon, Fórum de las Culturas in Barcelona, Festival do Mundo Celta in Ortigueira, Parapanda Folk and Plasencia Folk, now comes the time for their long awaited new recording, "Efffecto".

Andante, in an easy, not quite slow way, as with their first album, Ana Leira, Carolina Rodríguez, María López and Teresa García alternated performances and tours with rehearsals where they selected and honed the repertoire for the album that would serve to confirm their value. In their search for variety, they run all the gamut from reworkings of traditional pieces such as "Vén bailar", "Canteiros de Pontevedra", "Dama de papel", "Queridiño" and the "Copras á Patroa", where they invite us to participate in their Pontedeume hometown festivities, to a medieval chant "Trobadores" and even the Eastern European rhythms that rear their head on "Adios". They also apply their vocals to a song from Senegal, "Fatu yo", a clear consequence of their travels, contacts and material swapping, and to a traditional American tune previously recorded by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton on their album "Trio", to which they have given a Galician treatment as "Caixa de roseiras".

Social themes are not absent from this album, either. Apart from the commitment implied in the lyrics of Víctor Jara's "Canto libre", they recreate two more pop-oriented songs which are representative of the brief vogue for songs in the Galician language that began immediately after the end of the Franco dictatorship: they are "Meu amor mariñeiro", originally sung by the vocal group Fuxan Os Ventos, and "Corpiño xeitoso", that was a hit by Andrés do Barro. Both songs get revitalized by this new treatment.

Complicity with the audience is assured by the easy-going simplicity of their vocals, backed on stage by Jorge Juncal on accordion, Roi Adro on percussion and "Faltriqueiro maior" Pascal Gaigne on plucked instruments.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
