The reocrd label says:
For more than 660 years, the spiritual life of the Ottoman empire was profoundly influenced by the order of the Mevlevi, the whirling Dervishes. The mystic brotherhood gave rise to poets, musicians, theologians and politicians. Western travelers discovered it mostly through the ecstatic ritual of Sema, the ritual dance. The Whirling Dervishes were known as a synonym for the strange, the unknown and the fascination. The roots of their tenets lead back to the mystical Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi who died in 1273. Born in Balkh he had to flee the Mongolian invasions, moved to Konya, the capital of Selcuk empire, to work and teach. Here he reached for his own interpretation of Islam, which has the focus on the individual god-experience of the one who is truly seeking. Like most of the other mystic orders, Mevlevi was found after Mevlana's death. The whirling dance practiced by him was built into a ritual. Today it is still a central part of life of his disciples and followers which in the last decades could just privately be practiced because in 1922 the Turkish government banned the Mevlevi order. Only nowadays they get back parts of their freedom.
While Mevlana, the Sultan of Hearts was leaving the world, on December 17th, 1273 hew offered his Flowers of Love to mankind without discriminating toward language, religion and culture. The Mevlevi-Sema symbolizes the human love of Mevlana, the transition from materialistic world to the spiritual world. In order to be a perfect person the Derwishes (Member of Mevlana Brotherhood), are progressing in the path of Mevlana, by up-giving the so called "beauties of the temporary world", which make the people to behave like slaves. They wish to reach the real world, the true creator, the God, to become non-existing in the presence of God.
The Sema ritual signifies the Miraç - man's spiritual journey. It is his disappearance into Allah leaving his own self, rising with love, turning in the reality; and his return to himself, reappearing as a mature subject to God. It is a return to serve, through a renewed understanding, all creation, and all love of God. A Semazen with his sikke on his head and his tenure spiritually gets born to the reality and proceeds thereon. Rotating counter-clockwise around his heart, he embraces all human beings and all creatures with love. Their believe is that human beings are created to love and to be loved. Mevlana says "All love is a bridge to the love of God". A ritual of Sema consists of six parts, six selam - greeting.
From an artistic point of view among the music of Mevlevi there are the most valuable compositions of Classical Turkish music. Based on Mevlana Celladdin Rumi the music was developed with the Mevlevi ritual to Mevlana's lifetime and by his son Sultan Veled. His disciples introduced the whirling for special occasions and places to find moral and spiritual joy. Following the ideas and the principles of Mevlana the Mevlana order was founded by Sultan Veled and his followers. The Mevlevi ritual, as it is known today, is rooted in those days. Mevlana himself was an extraordinary musician. The Mevlevi music is considered to be accompaniment for the Mevlevi ritual. Mainly poems of the Mevlana's works Mesnevi and Divan-i Kebir are set to music.
