The young Filippo Gambetta showed great promise (and some marvelous fulfillment) with his first recording with the ensemble Stria. Now a bit older and a lot sharper, he is pulling together some of the most interesting new "art-folk" music being made in Italy today. Joined by a core ensemble of Claudio de Angeli (acoustic guitar) and Riccardo Barbera, this is a sleeker, cleaner sound than the marvelously lush Stria was. There are plenty of guest performers to fill out the sound, with vocalists, percussion, reeds and piano, plus father Beppe Gambetta on guitar, the amazing Canadian violinist Oliver Schroer and nyckelharpist Sandra Wong.
He's clearly still in the immense shadow of Riccardo Tesi (his teacher), but in some ways Gambetta is pushing the limits even further that his mentor, taking the risks of a young performer and finding new sounds and new routes for his still distinctly Italian music.
