Press from the producers:
Daughter of the celebrated tabla player Sankha Chatterjee, SANGEETA BANDYOPADHYAY possesses an extraordinary three octave vocal range, permitting her to display in concert not only her amizing technique but also a refinement and subtlety of interpretation that in our day and age is almost without equal. This North Indian artist, who received her rigorous training at some of the most important schools in the country has already recorded the CD Shruti (2003) for Felmay featuring two highly melodic and somewhat romantic ragas.

Now SANGEETA is back with a new work which not only highlights the beauty and purity of her singing voice but also provides moments of great emotional intensity. The six tracks presented here are particularly interesting for their origins in the Bhajan tradition, a genre in which SANGEETA specializes. The texts of these devotional songs, hymns to spirituality and divine love that enjoy great popularity in Northern India, derive from sacred Hindu scriptures and can often be heard voiced in the intonation of pilgrims as they step into the Ganges or else during temple rites. Indeed their popularity is such that a number of famous players have transcribed them for their own instruments.

Notable is that all the music on this recording was composed by SANGEETA herself, revealing her to be a multifaceted artist, while the texts are the work of mystics and saints highly revered by Hindustani tradition, such as Meerbai whose odes to Krishna have attained enduring popularity over the centuries.

For this recording SANGEETA is accompanied by Pandit Sankha Chatterjee on tabla, Debsankar Roy on violin, Sandip Chatterjee on santoor and Rupak Mukherjee on percussion.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
