The record label hype sheet (it's true, if a bit over-stated!)
Oliver's gift as a live performer was first introduced to the U.S. as part of the Africa Fete tour, where he shared the stage with Taj Mahal and Toumani Diabate's Kulanjan project, and Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal. Released in conjunction with an international tour, intensive promotional support including a scheduled appearance April 22nd on The Late Show with David Letterman, Vhunze Moto promises to bring Oliver to even greater worldwide renown.
Critics across the globe have raved about Oliver's melodic and danceable music. According to Entertainment Weekly, "Mtukudzi's music has an irresistible, dance-inflected groove that conjures up an afternoon on the beach. Enough soulful spice to satisfy old fans like Bonnie Raitt, and entice new ones." In another development certain to increase awareness of Oliver's songwriting gifts, Bonnie Raitt covers one of his songs on her new album Silver Lining (April 9th).
Vunze Moto translates as "burning ember" in Oliver's native Shona language, and like much of his lyrics, it refers metaphorically to political and social developments in Zimbabwe. During Zimbabwe's fight for independence and racial equality in the 70's Oliver's songs carried hidden messages of support for the freedom fighters. In recent years, Zimbabwe has been devastated by the world's worst AIDS epidemic, and members of Oliver's family and band have fallen victim to the disease. Oliver's lyrics often address the disease, encouraging people at home and abroad to help end the scourge. Zimbabwe's volatile political situation has reached a boiling point during the reign of the current President Robert Mugabe, as interracial conflict and aggressive battles over land reform have brought mayhem to the countryside. Oliver is revered in his native land for his ability to construct thoughtful, popular songs that address Zimbabwe's struggles in a profund yet apparent way that has endeared him to the public but often put him at odds with the ruling powers.
Oliver Mtukudzi, the legendary "Big Voice" singer from the politically troubled South African nation, Zimbabwe. Vhunze Moto (Burning Ember) captures Oliver at his best, with impeccable song craft, gripping melodies, captivating rhythms, and potent lyrics. A legendary figure in contemporary African music, Oliver's albums are consistent bestsellers in his native land, and his previous two acclaimed releases on Putumayo have helped catapult him to international recognition as one of Africa's most important musical figures. Vunzhe Moto will be released worldwide on April 23rd, 2002 at the beginning of Oliver's North American tour.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
