cd cover Manou Gallo
Dida (Exil / Discmedi)
$16.99

Guitarist, bass player, singer and composer from Ivory Coast (perhaps best known as the bassist for Zap Mama), Gallo is now exploring her own contemporary take on west African music with her first release (2004). It's not a surprising record, with her band Le Djiboi supplying a lot of the same jazz/pop roots that mark Zap Mama, but it is full of solid west African groove with only an occasional lapse into the silly (ie: "Boogie, boogie, boogie...."). For fans of Zap, Daulne, the pop side of Youssou, etc, this will be a positive addition to the collection.

Press sheet from the record label:
Well known in world music circuits as singer, intense dancer, percussionist and bass player of bands like the successful vocal ensemble Zap Mama and Tambours de Brazza, Ivorian Manou Gallo has recently emerged as one of the most interesting and exciting new voices of African music with the release of "Dida", her first album as leader of her own band, Le Djiboi.

The main inspiration behind the compositions included on this superb record comes from the ancient music tradition of the Central-West region of the Ivory Coast, homeland of Djiboi people, from where she originates. Deep African roots made of an exuberant sense of rhythm and the enrich vocal architecture she has grown surrounded by. But the reason why "Dida" has become such a seductive approach to world music is the amazing way she brings together the memory of her ancestors with her western culture influences (she's established in Belgium for a long time) in a fresh, innovative, blend of ultra-groovy highly-danceable funk, sensual R&B, emotive blues and African heritage. Manou Gallo, singing in French, English and Dida language, has recorded an album which perfectly fits in the nowadays popular world music label. It does in the most literal sense of it. Because on Gallo's voice gather past traditions and contemporary influences, African rhythms, Western styles and a whole world of sensitivity and joy!

Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
