Singer/songwriter and musician Alexis Kochan is of Ukraine descent, and utilizes her roots in intense and interesting ways with this world music ensemble. Their three recordings are each distinctive, utilizing similar roots but often different approaches.
Released in 1996, Variances presents music from the deepest layers of an ancient culture with a strikingly contemporary edge. Kochan collaborates with premier bandura player Julian Kytasty; they are joined by jazz violist Richard Moody, West African percussionist Evans Coffie and his protegé Henry Zacharias and multi-instrumentalist Martin Colledge (including Northumbrian pipes and cittern).
