Katia Cardenal
Sueño de una noche verano (KKV, Norway)

On "A Midsummer Night's Dream" the Nicaraguan singer presents the songs of Cuban songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. On this unique recording, produced in Norway, the band includes Norwegian musicians Knut Reiersrud on guitars, Jørund Bøgeberg on bass and Rune Andersen on drums. Two of the tracks also feature Silvio in duets with Katia. Reiersrud also did the arrangements, which have a unique flavor that transcends both artists' regional origins.

Katia Cardenal has pleased listeners with her Spanish-text Latin-American versions of the well-loved songs by Norwegian troubadour Alf Prøysen. She has also woven her magic to make Swedes blush with pride when they hear her versions of Swedish troubadour Evert Taube. This time she invites us to Cuba, where the greatest Latin-American singer-songwriter of our time, Silvio Rodriguez, has written songs that are cherished in every Spanish-speaking country.

Silvio Rodriguez is without question the greatest troubadour of the Spanish-speaking world. Tens of thousands flock to his concerts, whether in Santiago de Chile, Madrid or Havana, where he also lives. During the revolution in Nicaragua the young Katia befriended Silvio and they toured the countryside to perform their songs for the poor peasants.

Now Katia has made her own versions of the most popular of Silvio's songs. Her band includes Norwegian musicians Knut Reiersrud on guitars, Jørund Bøgeberg on bass and Rune Andersen on drums. Two of the tracks also feature Silvio in duets with Katia. A bit of a sensation, this is the first recording where an artist makes an entire CD with new interpretations of songs by Rodriguez. Many before her have used a Rodriguez song or two, as the late Swedish artist Björn Afzelius did when he recorded his translation of "Du är det finaste jag vet" (You're my heart, you're my soul). This was incidentally his greatest hit along with "Tusen bitar" (A Thousand Pieces), which you'll also find on Katia's record with Silvio's original lyrics. Silvio Rodriguez joins Katia for two duets on the CD which is perhaps the perfect way of expressing his approval of what she has done with his songs.

Silvio Rodriguez he is a very shy and retiring person, living a secluded life filled with an almost constant production of new lyrics and songs. He works in his personal recording studio, hardly ever leaving Cuba. The high revenues from the few tours he makes support the sophisticated recording-studio community found on this poor Caribbean island. "Sueña de una noche verano" (A Midsummer Night's Dream) has already become a great hit in Nicaragua, where Katia now lives with her family, and it was the best selling record there last year. Now it is being released in Norway and Sweden.

Knut Reiersrud is a very important contributor on this record, as he has provided the most important musical arrangement ideas. The CD was recorded at the Rainbow Studio.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
