Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.

 Anatomy of a Coup - Sacha Silva $12.99 (cdRoots# mw-002)
An unusual ensemble mixes flamenco, Indian classical and modern music with heady questions of personal and political issues, music, as the band says, 'that reads the newspaper.' An original sound, adventurous but rooted in traditions from around the world, and not a hint of "world-beat' or 'world fusion.' Highly recommended
Sanjog - Subroto Roy Chowdhury and Madhuri Chattopadhyay $18.99 (cdRoots# rd-8058)
Pure Indian music played by three masters of their respective instruments. These recent recordings have a startling freshness and immediacy, performed by volinist Madhuri Chattopadhyay, sitarist Subroto Roy Chowdhury and Sankha Chatterjee on tablas.
Dancing in the Light - Lakshmi Shankar $18.99 (cdRoots# hm-wv468049)
Within the classical music traditions of North and South India, the human voice is the most repsected instrument. Conversely, the mark of a master instrumentalist is the ability to evoke the power, suppleness and nuance of a great singer. And within the pantheon of great South Asian vocalists, few names kindle such intense admiration and reverence as that of singer Lakshmi Shankar. Lakshmi Shankar has a special affinity for the Hindu devotional songs called bhajans. The emotional core of this recital is Lakshmi's exquisite evocations of love (be it earthly or divine) and its darker twin: the torment of being separated from one's beloved. On this recording - co-produced by Michael Brook - she sets traditional poems (including two by Mirabai) to her own improvised melodies, accompanied by Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri on tabla, Pandit Ramesh Mishra on sarangi, and Suniti Bergman on tanpura.
 Kriya - Kriya $16.99 (cdRoots# alba-kriya)
Many of you already know Pauliina Lerche's accordion experiments with various global music sources, and her partner Peter Lerche's work on the guitar in similar modes. Kriya (work or process in Sanskrit) is the culmination of those explorations. The members of Kriya come from various musical backgrounds; Finnish traditional music, rock and the classical Indian (Hindustani) tradition. Songs are sung in Finnish and Sanskrit. While the folk roots are stong, this music is emphatically contemporary with strong hues of rock and jazz.
The Heartbeat of the East - Keyvan Chemirani and Pandit Anindo Chaterjee $19.99 (cdRoots# hm-ac121)
Keyvan Chemirani picked up the Iranian zarb at the age of 16 and was also captivated by the Indian tabla, with its metric precision, endless melodic variations, and multiplicity of timbres. Soon after he began devoting himself to the zarb and its Persian repertoire, Keyvan became fascinated with the Indian tabla player Anindo Chatterjee, whose meticulous artistry is notable for its remarkable clarity. On this new recording, packaged in a hard-cover CD-book, Chemirani and Chatterjee engage each other and their fellow musicians - Maryam Chemirani (voice), Ken Zuckerman (sarod), Bijan Chemirani (saz), Sokratis Sinopoulos (kemenche fi ddle), Stelios Petrakis (lyra), Henri Tournier (bansuri fl ute) - in a musical dialogue between the age-old Hindu and Persian traditions.
 Divine Inspiration - Aruna Sairam $17.99 (cdRoots# hm-wv468074)
Indian vocalist Aruna Sairam performs the Carnatic music of South India. Deeply rooted in the region's temple culture with its emphasis on devotional song, Carnatic music stretches back to ancient times and is organized around the system of melodic 'ragam' and rhythmic 'talam' (equivalent to the ragas and talas of Hindustani music). Sairam unites poetry, language, and music from across centuries and from across India itself in nine songs that vary in structure, pace and mood, written by nine poets of different periods and many languages, accompanied by violin, tampura, hand cymbals and a variety of hand drums.
Strings Tradition - Mamadou Diabate, Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan, Vidwan Lalgudi Gjr Khrishnan $17.99 (cdRoots# rd-8100)
Strings Tradition is an original production, different from the countless recordings which try to mix and mingle musical cultures of various origins. It deals with the union of classical traditions (West Africa, North Indian and South India) which have little in common with the vague idea of popular music that we usually associate with the music of the Indian sitar and violin and the Malian kora. These three musicians are all important artists in their own countries and each one offers inspiration and guidance to the others' musical traditions. They are accompanied by Gourishankar on tabla and Muraly Trichy on ghatam.

In Hindu philosophy, the term Shakti designates the vital, primordial energy at the heart of every creative dynamic. Shakti represents female power which complements that the male so that the flux of nature is brought into balance. In the Hindu pantheon, Shakti appears in the guise of the Mother-Goddess of Prosperity, or Saraswathi, Goddess of the Arts. Tana Tani - State of Bengal vs. Paban Das Baul $15.99 (cdRoots# rw-tana)
A dub-heavy melee in the British Asian breakbeat scene, where Paban's ecstatic, smoky vocals soar over juddering beats and basso basslines, and his urgent rhythms mutate into frantic drum 'n' bass. Both Zaman and Mimlu Sen (Paban's partner and collaborator) made suggestions, and Paban experimented by fitting more familiar rhythmic patterns like the dhrupada of the jhaptal into Zaman's syncopations. Not for the folkies, this is pretty raw electronica with great vocals.

 Raga Pulia-Kalyan - Pandit Ram Narayan $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-901)
Pandit Ram Narayan, brother of Chatur Lal, the first tabla player to impress the western world on a larger scale in the company of Ravi Shankar, ranks among the most eminent sarangi players of today. His novel style of musical expression has changed the role of the sarangi forever, from that of an accompaning instrument to a full grown solo instrument. Take particular note of his alap in Puria Kalyan, perhaps the best this writer has heard him play.
Ragas Shuddh-Sarang and Piloo Ka - Ustad Amjad Ali Khan $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-902)
Sarod Master Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is the son of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan and comes from a family of Great Music Masters whose artistic lineage goes back five generations. His style is thoroughly original, his greatest contribution to the Sarod is probably to have taken his inspiration from vocal music in forming his recitals and phrasing.
 Ragas Madhukans and Piloo - K. Sridhar $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-903)
One of today's finest exponents of the Sarod, Krishnamurti Sridhar was, from very early childhood, initiated into the Carnatic music and is one of very few South Indians to have made North Indian music their playing ground. From the age of five Sridhar was the student of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar of the Dagar School, the foremost master of the rudra veena and specialist in the traditionally classical and devotional Dhrupad Dhamar style of the North. Ustad it was who told him that the sarod was his instrument, and was he right! Sridhar is mainly inspired by Drupad, but you can also hear his love of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in his music. It is quite rewarding to compare his music with that of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
 Raga Piloo - Pandit Nikhil Banerjee $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-904)
Virtuoso Nikhil Banerjee, one of this century's greatest masters of the Indian sitar, passed away in 1986 at the age of 55. Banerjee was widely acclaimed for his intensely individualistic pursuit of the poetry of raga. Nikhil Banerjee studied northern Indian classical music with the sarodist Ustad Allauddin Khan, father of sarodist Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna and also teacher of Ravi Shankar and Pannalal Ghosh.
 Raga Desh - Pandit Nikhil Banerjee $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-905)
Nikhil Banerjee, along with Ali Akbar Khan, Annapurna, Ravi Shankar and Pannalal Ghosh, was a student of the legendary (and feared) Allauddin Khan, in Maihar. Banerjee passed away prematurely in 1986. Raga Desh was recorded in Stockholm 1975, at the same time as the previously released Raga Piloo (AMCD 904). The great Anindo Chatterjee also plays tabla on this recording.
 Raga Gangeyabushan - Dagar Ustad Z.M. $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-906)
In the beginning of the 1960’s, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar contracted instrument-maker Kanan Lal to construct a rudra veena, larger – and therefore with a lower register – than usual. In January of 1968, Ustad received an offer from the French label Alvarez/Le Boite á Musiqe (BAM) to release his first record. At the recording session, two takes of Raga Mangeyabushan were made. We had a hard time deciding which version to use, since both were fantastic. On that occasion, we chose the first. It is therefore a great pleasure to present the alternative take this time. Ustad’s son Bahauddin has informed us that the raga’s correct name is Gangeyabushan.
 Raga Mishra Bhairavi - Dagar Ustad Z.M. $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-907)
Before Ustad had his rudra veena built, he played sitar and for about ten years he kept switching between instruments before concentrating solely upon the rudra veena. As far as I know, this is the only existing recording of him playing sitar. Every Sunday evening during the 60’s, he held an intimate concert in his apartment where his students played, and the evening ended by Ustad himself performing a raga on the rudra veena or sitar. On this occasion he plays Bhairavi - a morning raga that traditionally ends a concert – but he plays Mishra (=mixed) Bhairavi, where one is allowed to make use of foreign tones in the raga.
 Serendipity - Studio Pagol $17.99 (cdRoots# hm-pagol)
A mix of Indian techno, pop, and even cocktail music features a wild cover of The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows (TNK) with a remixed upbeat tempo Bollywood style. Numerous artists from widespread horizons collaborated on Serendipity from Moroccan singer Shamal'hia to Bengalese singer, guitarist and keyboard player John Liton Baroï. The result of this fusion is an album that blurs the lines between musical genres.
Sarod Traditional Music from India - Aditya Verma $15.99 (cdRoots# os-15)
Distinguished sarod player Aditya Verma, accompanied by Vineet Vyas on tabla, performs two dynamic evening ragas. This digitally recorded disc contains a 16-page booklet.
 Khayals - Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur $17.99 (cdRoots# rd-khayals)
Accompanied by Rajashekhar Mansur - vocals, Baban Manjerekar - harmonium and D.R. Nerurkar - tabla. Less antique and austere than the dhrupad, Khayals is probably the most popular and well-known form of Hindustani vocal music. Essentially open and sweepingly 'romantic' in character, its semi-classical status permits the interpreter to adopt a less formal approach and therefore to give freer range to his emotions in improvisational passages.
 Nirguni Bhajans - Pandit Kumar Gandharva $17.99 (cdRoots# rd-bhajans)
Accompanied by Narayan Pandit and Satish Deshpande - tanpura, Govindrao Patwardhan - harmonium, Vasant Achrekar - tabla. Singer Kumar Gandharva was born in the region of Darhwad, in the north of Karnataka in Southern India. A leading exponent of Carnatic culture, he was a child-prodigy who grew up amid great upheaval, and who brought several crucial technical and expressive innovations to an age-old tradition. For fans of Indian classical music, this record provides a wonderful opportunity to develop a more profound understanding of the art connected to bhajan, an important form of Hindu devotional music.
 Hawa Hawa - Shujaat Husain Khan $16.98 (cdRoots# hm-hawa)
Sitarist Shujaat Husain Khan is considered one of the great North Indian classical musicians of his generation. His style, known as gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice. Shujaat is also known for his exceptional voice. The tracks on Hawa Hawa are mostly love songs and melodies remembered from his childhood. It is the simple beauty of these songs that makes this recording special. While Shujaat's life has been largely dedicated to the great classical tradition of North India, his heart lies in these simple melodies. Through this music, Shujaat states to the world, 'these are the sounds of my roots.'
 Love Trap - Susheela Raman $16.99 (cdRoots# nar-raman-love)
'Love Trap works because it places all of its varied elements (Tuvan throat singing, Greek clarinet, jazzy sax etc.) around Raman's distinctive reinterpretation of Southern Indian Karnatic song. Whatever else is going on, her musical personality is always centre stage.' - fRoots
 Scintillating Sax - Kadri Gopalnath $17.99 (cdRoots# rd-kadri)
Terrible title but a great recording of Indian classical, improvisational music on the unexpected saxophone of Gopalnath, accompanied by violin, mridangam, ghatam and morsing (jew's harp).
 Shruti (audio CD/video CD ROM set) - Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay $17.99 (cdRoots# rd-shruti)
Performing two ragas along with a number of devotional hymns Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay unleashes a formidable vocal talent cultivated through long years of study with singing maestros such as Chinmoy Lahiri and Sri Kamal Bandyopadhyay. With a three octave vocal range Sangeeta employs her amazing technique in dizzyingly acrobatic renditions of these pieces.

They take a spare and elegant approach, each instrument and voice holding equal importance in delivering these traditional and tradition-inspired songs, from soft balladry to almost avant garde energy.
