Hurv KRCD-26: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music III: Pastoral music from Malung
The pastoral music of Sweden is a unique tradition with ancient roots, yet was still in common use as an integral part of working life on many pastures in Dalarna in the 1950's and 60's. Typical of this music is the singing style called kulning, which is without words, and sung in a high register. This CD contains field recordings from Malung in west Dalarna, made in the 1960's and 70's, and they clearly transmit the magic of this music. Some of them are unique in that they are so long, and contain communication in kulning between two singers. There are also a few songs with words connected to herding, and tunes played on wooden whistle, cow's horn and fiddle.

Sigurd Holmberg

Hurv KRCD-28: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music V: Swedish Pastoral Music - The Magical Songs of the Forests
Whereas KRCD-26 covered the diversity and richness of the music of one parish, the present record makes it possible to study both the simliarities and differences by getting to know herding calls from other parts of the country. The aim has been to include as many as possible of the oldest known recordings.

Hurv KRCD-29: Marie Bengtsson - Claude Debussy
Marie Bengtson received her soloist diploma in 1984. She has performed as a soloist, with chamber groups and as an accompanist in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Marie says: "I am fascinated by Debussy's ability to use tones and sounds to paint the colours of nature and convey its moods registering all its nuances of varying light, the elusiveness and boundlessness of it all..." Although this is virtuoso music of the highest degree, the listener hardly notices it. The mood is very relaxing and the beauty of Debussy's music is striking. The recording is made with fine vintage valve microphones, contributing to a rarely soft and beautiful piano sound. Contents: Suite bergamasque, Arabesque No.1, Estampes and Nocturne.

Hurv KRCD-30: Traditional Hymn-Singing from Gammalsvenskby - the old Swedish village in the Ukraine
The Swedish island of Dagö, in the Baltic (Hiiumaa i today's Estonia), was lost to the Russians in 1710; in 1781, 1200 Swedes were deported to a region in the Ukraine which had recently been taken from Turkey, and called "New Russia", where settlers wre needed for the conquered territory. From then until their arrival in Sweden in 1929, the villagers struggled to retain their Swedish identity, their language, their history and their traditions, under the difficult conditions in which they lived beside the river Dnjepr, isolated from the rest of Swedish culture.
This recording features the highly-ornamented folk hymn-singing of Anders Hoas and Maria Hoas, recorded in 1937, with repertoire from two local editions of the Swedish Hymn-book of 1695/97. Complete hymn texts.
