Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
Thanks- Cliff, cdRoots

Home Records (Belgium)
This small, artist run label is producing some exciting new routes/roots. This small selection of CDs represents some of Belgium's best folk musicians as well as some bright young new lights.
Listen to a few selections from the catalog in my Home Records JukeBox

Brand new world / Dans l'oubli du sommeil
- Didier Francois and Gilles Chabenat / D. François and Gabriel Yacoub
$23.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-033)
Two complete recordings on 2 CDs in one package, both essential works of new central European folk music. On one, the passionate dialogue of two symbols of the French and Swedish traditions: vielle a roue (hurdy-gurdy) and nyckelharpa. Music that is popular and erudite, terrestrial and celestial. The second celebrates the violin and nyckelharpa in union with the human voice, with one of France's great singers at the lead, joined by Sylvie Berger and Tom Theuns. It is flawless and visceral; highly recommended.

Alma
- Dazibao
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-009)
This Belgian quartet of accordions, guitar, ud and percussion offer some very fresh ideas, using local and global roots to produce original new music unchained to any genre. Highly Recommended! fRoots says: '...The three elements that make up Dazibao seem to have equally important contributions to make. Firstly there is the lead provided by the diatonic accordeons of Sophie Cavez and Jonathan De Neck. The way these two interplay and interact would make an interesting album in itself, but here they are superbly underpinned by Middle Eastern percussion from Jo Zanders and the assistance of Karim Baggili who alternates North African ud and flamenco guitar. Working within these margins they come up with some very inventive compositions and arrangements...'

Les Tisserands (The Weavers)
- Les Tisserands
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-017)
A collaboration between three Flemish groups involved in folk, contemporary and early music, in a modern exploration of the Flemish spiritual movement of the Cathars from the 12th and 13th centuries. The movement had roots in Flanders, France and Occitania. Their Medieval texts and melodies serve as source material for this program of music, both in original form and in the compositions of Jowan Merckx.

King Size
- Tricycle
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-023)
The record label says: 'Some people call it 'jazz', others say 'world' or 'imaginary'... the choice is up to you. The music of Tricycle is an energetic, comprehensible creation with a visual character. Tricycle addresses himself to a large, curious and adventurous audience. The original compositions of the band, tinted with nostalgia, evoke, in a blithely and subtly way, the old stereotypes.' - Tuur Florizoone, accordion, piano; Philippe Laloy, saxophone, flute; Vincent Noiret, bass. Listen!

Brindiban
- Jugalbandi trio
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-020)
the label says: 'A subtle fusion between two great traditions of improvised musics: Northern India and jazz. Open minded, this trio plays an original and beautiful music. Indeed, all is deep and powerful in the second album of this intercontinental band, bringing the harmony of the piano to compositions written in the Indian complex rhytmic cycles.' Listen!

Or propos
- Claire Goldfarb
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-018)
The label says: 'Claire agrees all the audacities in her overall exploration of her voice and sonorities of the cello, she dwells in this space of vibrations. No sound which does not deliver an emotion. An artist not seeking to propose her great control of the instrument but to give up herself in it, full with sensitivity, generosity, freedom, imagination, simplicity and audacity, harmony and humour.' Listen!

Hypnogol
- Aurelia
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-037)
The second ring by the trio Aurélia: Aurélie Dorzée (violin, alto, voice), with Tom Theuns on guitars and vocals; Stephan Pougin on percussion. Guest musicians Michel Massot (tubas) and Sara Salverius (accordéon chromatique) fill out the ensembles unique, edgy sound in this slightly skewed tale of the sea.

E40
- Dazibao
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-039)
The second release by this wonderful Belgian ensemble will surely garner as much acclaim as their previous CD, Alma. The diatonic accordions of Sophie Cavez and Jonathan de Neck are still in the forefront, musically and compositionally, but this 2007 release offers a more confident ensemble sound, a little richer in jazz roots while still solidly enthralled the folk roots of their region. Exceptional music from an exceptional ensemble, once again.

cinema novo
- Massot-Florizoone-Horbaczewski
$18.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-6042)
So what can you can do with an accordion a tuba and a cello? The three instruments have a lot in common: they are well equipped with a big sound, an imaginary character, a large register and a photogenic outfit. This band pusheds their limits in a creative new way. Michel Massot - tuba, euphonium, trombone; Tuur Florizoone - chromatic accordeon; Marine Horbaczewski - cello.

Marcel
- Olla Vogala
$18.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-6043)
Olla Vogala offers a fascinating and unusual interpretation of music, word and sound, making multi-culti and multi-ethnicity much more than hollow phrases. This large ensemble is led by Belgian composer and violinist Wouter Vandenabeele.

The luckless lands of the North
- aNoo
$16.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-031)
aNoo is a group led Brussels based Finn, Anu Junnonen. Anu started playing piano at the age of seven and added flute a few years later. BBB
- Mr Diagonal and the Black Light Orchestra
$18.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-6041)

Daniel Barbenel (piano, voice); Grégoire Tirtiaux (saxaphone, bass, voice); Eric Bribosia (keyboards, voice); Yannick Dupont (drums, vibraphone, glockenspiel, electronics) and Quentin Manfroy (flutes). Listen

Vestibule
- Tam Na Vulinn
$18.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-6040)
Belgian trio Tam Nà Vulinn plays fast and loose with both tradition and jazz, and pushes the boundaries of what they themselves call folk music. Alexis Amette (guitars), Baptiste Argouarc'h (5 stringed violin) and Mathieu Guyon (percussion, vibraphone) are joined on a few tracks by guests Charles Lucas (bass) and Yannick Leblay (programming) hint at Celtic and American roots, Flemish tradition and global pop, ultimately producing a sound that is quite original. Fans of the great Tesi-Valliant duo projects will find this intriquing.

Douar
- Karim Baggili
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-021)
Guitarist, oud player and composer Baggili was recording this solo album at the same time as his previous ensemble release, Cuatro con Cuatro, but the offerings here are distinctly different - sparse, inquisitive, full of virtuoso fingerwork, accompanied only by an occasional conga or cajon.

Steel strings, nylon strings, vocal cords...plain and simple songs at the crossroads of folk, blues and pop. Melody is the mainline. The Belgian band A consommer de préférence offers a unique and varied musical pallet on élevé en plein air. They call it 'Positive Orchestral Music.'

Cryptonique
- Fabian Beghin and Didier Laloy
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-025)
The record label says: 'This extraordinary duo presents a new repertoire based on the meeting between the chromatic and diatonic accordion. Didier Laloy plays lyrically, but and with a lot of swing. He is reserved and dynamic, but always subtle, with an eye for the smallest details. Fabian Beghin has his own dynamic sound with a wide scope on the world. Together they search for the perfect marriage between the force of Beghin's accordéon chromatique and the lyrical poetry of Laloy's diatonque. A cutting edge adventure.'

Krakalin
- Ambrozijn
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-013)
This Belgian ensemble is a house favorite and this 2006 release is as good as what has come before. using true roots and lots of innovation, this acoustic ensemble of Tom Theuns (guitar, vocals), Wim Claeys (diatonic accordion) and Wouter Vandenabeele (violin) is always vibrant and always exploring the boudaries of their tradition. Tom Theuns says: 'Somewhere by the side of a river, Krakalin, the city you've always dreamed about, where romances, nightmares, visionary illusions, runaway grooms, strange sects, broken hearts, boxes of fireworks and stories of brave sailors are washed upon its shore.'

Gardadvergur
- Deux accords diront
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-014)
Two talented girls with diatonic accordions, Anne Niepold and Aline Pohl, Deux Accords Diront, with some twenty nimble fingers and about hundred ounces of perfectly working brains, which make it quite easy for them to create, compose, play and record the music they love. The two generous and meticulous 'poulettes' (as they refer to themselves) have prepared twelve exciting and innovating titles, neither trad, nor jazz, classical or world. Add some musette, bewildering melodies amd adventurous improvisations, sprinkle everything with a sense of humor and they prove that the 'braces piano' is as fit as a fiddle!

Festina Lente
- Aurelia
$19.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-007)
Belgian group Aurélia offers a thoroughly original if somewhat quirky sound made by Aurèlie Dorzée (violin, alto and kazoo), Tom Theuns (guitar and a completely unique voice, from the band Ambrozijn) and Stephan Pougin (percussion). The compositions are strong, and arrangements remarkably dense for a trio.

Si la terre...
- Genevieve Laloy
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-501)
Belgian singer and flautist Geneviève Laloy offers this recording as 'songs for children.' Perhaps, but this is not 'kid's music' by any definition. This largish ensemble of Sophie Cavez (diatonic accordion), Philippe Laloy (flutes, alto sax, voice), Vincent Noiret (bass), Stephan Pougin (percussion), Paul Prignot (guitars) and Jacques Verhaegen (voice) offer a diverse sound, powerful, sometimes dark, sometimes humorous.

Hors-piste
- JC Renault and Didier Laloy
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-008)
fRoots says: 'It would be interesting to have enumerated the many and various musical projects - albums, bands, concerts, recordings - that the hyperactive workaholic Monsieur Laloy has been involved in, in the past five years or so. It would make a long and impressive list. Here his diatonic accordeon is paired with Jean-Christophe's piano and compositions. The best description of this music would be modern conservatoire music with decided folk and worldmusic leanings. There is probably nothing to compare it with in Britain but it is a similar mould to the compositions of Carl Hession and Micheal O Suilleabhain in Ireland. This is thoughtful, enjoyable music.' Listen

Doab
- Jugalbandi Trio
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-004)
You might expect something in the 'world-fusion-new-age' vein from the trio of Fabian Fiorini (piano), Suman Sarkar (tablas) and Fabian Beghin (bansuri flute and bell). But instead, what they offer is a solid, almost jazz approach, taking the ragas that are the root of their music and turning them into original, distinctly European new music. Listen

Promesses
- Bradyaga
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-010)
Contemporary roots music from Belgium by Naïra Mnoian (composer and pianist), Laurence Waters (voice), Cédric Waterschoot (guitar, bass), Walter Meneghello (clarinet and accordéon), Véronique Decock (violin) and Osvaldo Hernandez (percussion). Listen

Accordion n' drum n' bass
- Turlu Tursu
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-011)
Turlu Tursu attack the accordion traditions of the world with a mix of clever arrangements and spirited improvisations of standards from European music (Balkan, Celtic, klezmer) as well as musical forms from around the globe: Indian ragas, Arab maqams, music of the Caribbean and more. The accordion is vessel, the bass and drums the anchor. It's irreverent, agressive, witty and powerful. Listen

Cuatro con Cuatro
- Karim Baggili Quartet
$17.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-012)
Based mainly on the different Spanish traditional rhythms (Bulerias, Alegrias, rumba, and tango), the techniques of flamenco, and the sonorities of the Middle East through the Arabic lute (oud), Baggili performs with three exceptional musicians. Kathy Adam's cello strengthens the rhythmic aspect of the flamenco and brings sweetness to its lyrical side. The flute of Philippe Laloy brings the sound of jazz. Osvaldo Hernandez' percussions (cajon, darbouka, maracas, etc.) offer a rich tonal palette and South American rhythms. The compositions are original and often daring, lending a whole new dimension to the flamenco guitar without diluting its essential nature. Listen

La est la question
- Jean-Christophe Renault
$15.99
(cdRoots# hrbe-005)
