La Sardana (World Village)

The cobla is a traditional music ensemble of Catalonia. It is generally used to accompany the Sardana, a traditional Catalan folk dance, danced in a circle. In Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, in the summer time, one can often see cobla performances in open outdoor squares, with dozens of Catalonians mixed with tourists dancing the Sardana, their purses and backpacks placed on the ground within the circle. Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat de Barcelona (the official cobla of the city) is one of the best Catalan groups that plays the traditional Catalan Sardana. The group was formed in 1983 and with this recording they are celebrating their 25th anniversary.
