The band’s name, Mártires del Compás (loosely translated: “Martyrs of the Beat”) is not only satiric but the literal truth. Flamenco, the sonic legacy of mostly anonymous Arabic, Roma (Gypsy), and Spanish singers, dancers and guitarists who lived and died in the southern province of Andalucía, is certainly constructed upon rigorously complex rhythmic systems. But these can ignite duende, an altered state so blissfully uninhibited and exhilarating that conventional notions of time and space are all but obliterated. Die-hard purists have proclaimed that adulterating so hallowed a tradition is like drinking soda pop out of the Holy Grail. But this album proves for all time that, in the right hands, transformations in the opposite direction, complete with out-of-body experiences, are also possible. Screaming electric guitars and Chico Ocano‘s topical lyrics, plus a slyly concocted bouquet of American, South American and Caribbean flavors are flung amid an already fiery crucible of blistering, raw-edged vocals, fierce acoustic strumming, incongruously sweet harmonies and rock-solid yet constantly shifting hailstorms of palmas (handclaps) and woody percussion.
