A great collection of "new song" from Sicily includes some of my favorites and a number of folks that were new to me, and probably to you, as well! Rooted and gutsy, this is not pop, not folk, not 'traditional' but something that runs through all of these on on to something nuovo.

Far from the clichés and the folklore beats the true heart of Sicily. This hot, dry Italian island, crossroads between the East and the West, is rich with a centuries-old musical history. Sicily is also the home of a new generation of performers, proud of their roots and open to the promise of the future. These musicians are perpetuating traditions, but also enriching them with their own life experience. The artists heard on this disc, like their counterparts from Cuba, Cape Verde or the Réunion Island, are both preserving an ancient art and inventing a future for it. Their instruments are the zampogna, friscalettu, organetto and tamorra and their goal is to celebrate the beauty of this proud island in song. The fifteen tracks of Canto Nuovo provide a brief glimpse in to the soul of a land where the sun also sets, but less often.
