cd cover Eliseo Parra
de ayer mañana (World Village)

Eliseo Parra has been rewriting the folk music of Spain for a long time now, imbuing the folklore and traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, the forgotten lore and ancient music, and revitalizing it with his own special sense of modernity. He sings in Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Basque on de ayer maņana (from yesterday, tomorrow), joined by stellar musicians including members of Alboka and Josean Goikoetxea. This is a blend of art-music, folk, jazz and pop/world music.
Also of note, it is an interesting package, a nice paper gatefold with a separate insert for each song's lyrics and nice graphics.

que ne lo llevan

Parra's earlier recording Viva quien sabe querer is a cdRoots favorite.

Info from the record label:
Eliseo Parra is one of the great musicians of Spain, able to assimilate tradition, re-read it, and infuse it with a surprising modernity. Parra has spent a great part of his life investigating the folklore and tradition of all the cultures that have made up the Iberian Peninsula and, especially, all those that with time were lost and that in some cases are only in the hands of a few. Eliseo has recorded and preserved musical manifestations that, unfortunately, do not exist anymore. A cultural gift that is slowly disappearing and that thanks to work like his can be preserved and perpetuated. Few people can say they have recorded songs in our four official languages (Castilian, Catalan, Galician and Basque). There is hardly a Spanish region left to which Eliseo has not been to record, enrich and update some of its most traditional melodies. But, going even further than this work of investigation, Eliseo Parra shows us that traditional music is not, in any way, at odds with modernity, that it doesn't only belong to the past, and that it can be attractive and of great interest to new generations. Eliseo Parra's new solo album is entitled de ayer maņana (from yesterday, tomorrow) - a very Spanish phrase. For this CD, Parra has included songs from Murcia and La Rioja and a song sung in Basque. Collaborators include Alboka, Josean Goikoetxea and some other surprises.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
