Press release from the label:
Parissa is the foremost female singer of Persian traditional and spiritual music. Known for her amazing improvisational skills, Parissa has acquired a passionate following both in Iran and abroad. She spent much of her early career fighting against bureaucratic obstacles and a misrepresentation as a pop singer. Eventually, after a fierce crusade in the media she was allowed to work with other traditional artists. After the revolution, Parissa was not allowed to sing in mixed public gatherings and devoted herself to teaching. When limitations on traditional music were lifted in 1998, she was able to perform at concerts in Europe. Since their founding ten years ago, the Dastan Ensemble has established itself as one of Iran's most distinguished musical groups, using its fundamentals of melodic, rhythmic and dynamic variation to develop new forms and combined sonorities. The ensemble includes some of the country's finest virtuoso instrumentalists and has performed worldwide.
The Iranian singer Parissa is a well-kept secret. With her enchanting, supremely silken voice and her intonation of the utmost precision, this musical jewel was soon hailed as an icon of Persian song. Countless tours brought her to the great concert halls of the world. As a woman, she was forbidden from performing in her homeland for many years, and internationally available recordings remained hard to come by. Now, looking back on a unique career that spans more than thirty years, she has joined forces with Dastan, the leading ensemble of Persian music, to enter the recording studio for Network. "Shoorideh" means "troubled". The lyrics on this double CD tell of the troubling turmoil of the heart. The texts were originally penned by those very poets -- Rumi, Hafiz, Sa'di und Attar - who prompted Goethe to exclaim "Truly, the poets of the Orient are greater!" All the lyrics of this beautifully presented edition have been translated in full. The musicians of Dastan play traditional lutes like tar and barbat, the kamancheh stringed instrument and percussion. Masters of the art of improvisation, they have developed a sound of rare homogeneity, melding song, poetry and instrumental accompaniment in harmonious unison. Over all this floats the peerless virtuosity of Parissa's voice. This is a musical delight long awaited by specialists and music lovers alike.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
