Press from the band:
It has come as no surprise to anyone who has heard Ojos de Brujo that their American debut, Barí, was met with great excitement in the Latin and Anglo media. The band's wild mix of genres would have come apart at the seams in the hands of less focused artists. Instead, their blend is as tight, well executed and original as the work of far more experienced groups. Pair that musical energy with lyrics that aim straight at the social ills of modern Barcelona (and by extension, the world) and you have a group that is determined to change the status quo, both musically and politically. Since the release of Bari in May 2003, Ojos de Brujo ("Eyes of the Wizard") have lived up to their name by magically seeming to appear everywhere at once. They were on CNN's Music Room and CNN en español, on Univision's top-rated morning show Despierta America! on VH-Uno and in concerts ranging from National Geographic's All Roads Film Festival to Miami's Little Havana, and from Central Park Summerstage to the "so-crowded-the-cops-raided-the-show" Martyrs Club in Chicago. They even made it to Billboard's World Music Top 15. Now the turntable wizardry of Ojos de Brujo takes center stage with the US release of Remixes from Bari. Featured are remixes from the group's brilliant turntablist DJ Panko, including "Calé Barí" "Tiempo de Drumba" and a 7-minute reinvention of "Quien engaña no gana" (Cheats Never Win). The six-track collection also features a remix from Ojos de Brujo's gypsy guitarist (and break-dancer!) Ramón Giménez. With concerts at SXSW in March 2005, and all over the US later this year, Ojos will continue to show why they are one of the most exciting and creative acts in Latin music today.

"From the moment it starts, there's no doubt that this is an album of now. Energetic, assertive and joyful, it does what you want a record to do: it changes the mood and makes life seem full of possibilities. Reaching back to flamenco and rumba, grabbing handfuls of hip hop, dub and modern-sounding drum licks and bass lines (but not drum-and-bass!), the group makes forward-looking music that could definitely have been made only in Spain and probably only in Barcelona." - Charlie Gillett, BBC
“It's like flamenco passing through the prism of the sounds and preoccupations of the modern city” - fRoots "...on the leading edge of an exciting musical movement in Spain today." - Jacob Edgar, RootsWorld

The record label says:
Barí is the perfect introduction to the musical magic of Ojos de Brujo. The album takes its name from a word in Caló – the Gypsy (Roma) dialect of Spain – that means, roughly, 'finding the groove in life' - the same way you do in music. Xavi Turull, the group's percussionist, explains: "Barí is a word that Ramon, who's Gypsy, picked up from his grandmother. It's kind of like the feeling that everything in life is working right. That everything feels good." That's an apt description of the album, too – eleven original tracks (and two remixes) where everything works right and feels good. Throughout it all, Ojos de Brujo displays an easy mastery of – and respect for – flamenco's roots. Says Xavi, "We live in Barcelona and we live strong – always out in the streets, so we've always lived rumba catalana and flamenco puro really strongly. But when Marina came into the group, we became even more focused on the flamenco. Our roots got stronger and we became more confident when we experimented with other styles. We became more solid – more of a band."

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
