From the liner notes: Malouma is the only Mauritanian woman performing modern Mauritanian music. In 1998, with the release of her first album Desert of Eden (Shanachie), the world embraced this talented artist, composer and interpreter. Malouma's music is a mix of traditional and modern sounds. She melds western styles to the Moorish music of the Sahara, adding electric guitars to traditional instruments such as the four-stringed, lutelike tidinit. Anchored in tradition yet resolutely modern, inspired by the songs of the desert and immersed in the rhythms of the Senegal River, somewhere at the crossroads of West Africa, the Arab and the Berber worlds, Malouma's music is unique. Malouma is very active as a spokeswoman for women's rights in Mauritania, a Muslim country. She has recently taken this a significant leap further, embarking on a political career as a senator in the Mauritanian government. Widely acclaimed in the UK press, Malouma has attained superstar status in her homeland. "From the desert Country of Mauritania comes one of Africa's great singers. Backed by guitars and traditional instruments like the guitar-like tidinit, she mixes subtle, slinky blues-edged songs with others that veer from Moorish influences through to what sounds like a new desert fusion of gospel and gently driving R&B. There are passages that edge towards western pop, but then she's back to her cool, drifting desert blues, her understated voice as varied as her influences" - The Guardian (UK)

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
