Born in South Africa in 1976 Katia Guerreiro goes to the Azores islands when she still was a child. In 1994 comes to Lisbon where she made her studies in Medical University of Lisbon. Her first contact with music starts in the Azores where she plays the traditional instrument of the islands, "viola da terra" (typical instrument of the islands), in a folklore group of São Miguel. In Lisbon she founds a musical group of students where she plays and sings and also integrates a Rock Band from the 60's - Os Charruas - as their lead vocalist.
It is with all her musical friends; from the folklore untill the rock band, that she founds Fado. It is in 2000 in a concert in the Coliseu de Lisboa in memory to Amália Rodrigues that she embraces her career in Fado. After this concert the critics were unanimous referring to Katia as the most important performance of the night.
Her first album, FADO MAIOR, is edited in 2001. This CD is Silver Prize and nominee to the José Afonso Prize. Also edited in Japan by Latina Label, Top of Sales in South Korea is edited in Europe by Empreinte Digitale. In 2003 Nas Mãos do Fado, her second album, is once more nominee for the José Afonso Prize. In this album she sings the poetry of the most important names in Portugal such as Luís de Camões, Ary dos Santos, Florbela Espanca and António Lobo Antunes. The NHK, the Japanese network channel, dedicates an hour documentary over Katia's life.
In 2004 the French Cultural TV MEZZO produced a film about Katia's life and career, with transmission in September of the same year.
Since she starts she made plenty of concerts all over the world: France, Morocco, Belgium, England, Wales, Spain, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Greece, Japan, Italy, Tunis, New Caledonia, Torquay, with performances in wonderful theatres and in the most important international music festivals.
Last year she made two tours, one in France and the other in Japan, each one with 10 concerts. Besides this Katia Guerreiro has been invited by the Portuguese government to represent the Portuguese song not only in official receptions to Presidents and Ministers of other countries as to accompany them in official visits all over the world. For the Commemorations of the 30 years of the 25th April Revolution, the Minister's Committee as distinguished Katia as one of the 30 personalities from her generation notable in her activity, in pair with cientists, maestros, writers, ...
Invited by the Minister of the Culture and Communication of France, she participated in "The Encounters for Europe of Culture" that took place last 2 and 3 may, in La Comédie Française, in Paris. With a performance that included a speech in her own language - a demand of the Minister of the Culture and Communication an d of the public - she finished her intervention with a fado song "a capella" in a demonstration of what is this kind of music.
During 2006, Katia Guerreiro will be performing live her recently released third album "Tudo ou Nada". In this album she has included works by Sohia de Mello Breyner, Vinicius de Moraes, Lobo Antunes or Joaquim Pessoa, to sound more professional and autobiographical than ever. Because she is not a promising singer any more, Katia is already one of the most important and charming fado singers of the moment. In her own worlds, " 'Tudo ou Nada' is like the challenge I do in everything I am: doctor, artist, woman, daughter, sister, friend..."
