URBĀLIA RURANA & MAURIZIO MARTINOTTI
Territoris Amables
Resistencia, Spain / Ethnosuoni FolkClub, Italy
Listen!

cd cover This collaboration between the group Urbālia Rurana from Valencia, Spain and the renowned Piedmont musician Maurizio Martinotti highlights folk music from two regions that do not get the international attention that they deserve.

Urbālia Rurana have an impressive track record that stretches back to 1990 and Martinotti brings his experience of twenty years as leader of La Ciapa Rusa and his excellent new band Tendachënt to the project.

There are many similarities in the landscape, music and culture between Valencia and the North Italian region of Piedmont, described in the liner notes as "two different tributaries to one flowing river". Territoris Amables translates as Gentle Territories and both artists see this as describing the character of their peoples and their land.

The intelligent arrangements of traditional material from both regions and sympathetic style of the original compositions give the music relevance to a contemporary audience without losing touch with the music's roots. There is great variety throughout the album which includes sentimental songs such as El Rector Té Una Cabreta, a style that is similar to Andean folksong in Picaina, the mediaeval instrumentation of Gian Antoni, Arabic influences in Quan Vages A La Ribera..., a calypso tinge to Doloretes and the dance tempo of the Piedmont song La Pulaiera.

This is a collaboration that gives a fresh perspective on both traditions and is an accessible starting point for anyone who is unfamiliar with either. - Michael Hingston

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
