The alboka is a type of double clarinet made of cow horns, a double-bored pipe and cane reeds that is unique to Basque heritage. Here Koteron's alboka is accompanied by Junkera's diatonic accordion, tambourine, and txalaparta. Guests, include members of Oskorri and La Musgaña, providing bagpipes, flutes, bouzouki, mandolin, hurdy-gurdy, percussion, bass and piano. The tunes are all original compositions, but clearly based on old traditional sources, even as the most modern ones push the envelope and expand into the future.

"The balance is just right; there are tranquil moments, where Tomás San Miguel's piano and Luis Delgado's Arabic and other percussion rise to the surface, but it never becomes even remotely floaty-new-age; it's immensely robust and it always knows where it's going... this is traditional music but the word "herrikoia" (traditional) doesn't appear - it's a living tradition. " - Andrew Cronshaw, fROOTS
I reckon one listen to this album and anyone with half an ear would recognise what makes Basque music distinctive. "Bright melodies, catchy rhythms and intricate textures make the instrumental numbers compelling, from the simplest tunes to the most dense and layered arrangements. Though the disc is mostly acoustic, Naxto de Felipe and Anton Laxta of Oskorri, and several members of the band Maixa Ta Ixiar sing a few songs as well, making this as well-rounded as it is satisfying." - Dirty Linen |

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
