Phaleg and Nour Eddine
TaraGnawa
$17.99
The TaraGnawa project brings together two sides of the Mediterranean; Phaleg's Calabrian roots in Italy and the Mahgrebi roots of Morocco's gnawa tradition as exemplified in the music of Nour Eddine. It is performed with both daring and sensitivity to the traditions of both cultures, creating something new rather than simply fusing disparate elements.

The record label says:
Both groups have a real and deep aknowledge of the popular music of their respective countries:
NOUR EDDINE , before his last oustanding "COEXIST" production, which is a fusion of various genres, recorded two "strong and pure" albums of MAGHREB music.
PHALEG, on their side, have been making for years researchs on ethnomusic . They boast the presence of Sasą Megna from Papanice in Crotone, who is one of the best singing-masters of beating guitar in Calabria.
The World Music definition, sometimes erroneously used, properly fits this time. In fact this project , although influenced by the tradition of the two countries, is completely autonomous and enriched by traditional instruments such as Calabrian lira, concertina, reed-piper, oud, darbukka, etc. plus electric bass, distorted guitars and battery.
The result is a strong and suggestive" live "show, a mixture of songs- easy and exciting to listen to -with a remarkable rhythmic dynamism and aggressive moments in perfect tuning with the "dyonisiae" of popular music.
A journey across the two Mediterranean sides, closer thanks to the present multiethnic reality where ,particularly in the South, the two communities live and integrate maintaining their own identity.
These ten outstanding people acting on the stage, each one with its own traditional costume and instrument ,are witnesses against racialism and intolerance . Thanks to their music a message of peace and fraternity is given.
The Tara-Gnawa project gets life thanks to the meeting between two Mediterranean musical cultures : the Calabrian one of PHALEG (from which TARA- which means tarantella- derives) and that of MAGHREB of NOUR EDDINE (from which gnawa -which is the most significant part of that tradition- comes) . Both tarantella and gnawa are tied to dances which belong to rites of possession with therapeutic purposes.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
