| "Nando Citarella and the ensemble of dancers, singers and instrumentalists called La Paranza have been experimenting for many years with reconstructing folk forms and mixing them with music from other sources. The largely traditional material on Voce 'E Mare originates from the ensemble's native Naples, other parts of Italy and more exotic sources, such as the Arabo-Andalusian poetry that forms the basis of the track Noubah. There is a broad mix of styles employed and consecutive tracks are often a radical contrast. The album opens with some stately unaccompanied chanting in a liturgical style, 'Tarantella Di San Michele' is an energetic dance with hints of flamenco, 'Sta Vecchia Canaruta' is sung in a gracious manner with instrumentation contemporary to its 16th-century source and 'Ay Como Cotula' is a collaboration with drummers from Burkina Faso, with some call and response vocals over a rich, ever-changing wall of percussion. The refined settings of most of the songs are an enormous contrast to the percussion-driven dance tracks (which have the vibrancy that you would fully expect from a troupe of dancers led by a percussionist). This album must be a good indication of what to expect from a live performance and in fact many of the tracks are taken from live recordings." - Michael Hingston, fRoots |
The record label says:
A dive into the Mediterranean traditions: serenades inspired by flamenco, Neapolitan villanelle at the fascinating rhythm of Citarella’s tammorra up to the resumption of noubah (work), which is an ancient form of poetry in music whose origins are Arab-Andalusian.
A collection of great successes from Citarella’s many concerts in Italy and around the world.

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
