The Cherry Tree (SACD) - Anonymous 4
- 18.99 This holiday music classic features medieval English carols and Anglo-American spiritual songs. It is the eighteenth original recording for the renowned vocal ensemble and their first since 2006’s Gloryland. The Cherry Tree is named after the miracle ballad of Joseph and Mary, the earliest text of which survives from a Coventry Play from around 1400. The 'Cherry Tree' story persisted in many forms, making its way into medieval British carols of the mid-15th century and into British and American traditional ballads. In it, Joseph doubts the divine origin of Mary’s pregnancy only to hear Jesus speak from within Mary’s womb, causing a cherry tree to bend its branches and offer his mother its fruit. DOHNÁNYI: Violin Sonata; Janácek: Violin Sonata - Hagai Shaham (violin), Arnon Erez (piano) - 19.98 Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez have been enthusiastically acclaimed for their dazzling duo performances. For their latest disc, they turn to two composers who were seminal figures of Eastern European music during the early twentieth century. Dohnányi composed a number of significant pieces for the violin, including two violin concertos. One of his most important chamber works is the Violin Sonata, Op.21, composed in 1912. The work shows his individual development of stylistic traits of Brahms and Liszt. Also recorded here is Dohnányi's most overtly folk-influenced work, Ruralia hungarica, and a movement from his first Orchestral Suite arranged as a thoroughly idiomatic piece for violin and piano by Jascha Heifetz. In the first days of World War I, Dohnányi's native Hungary was invaded by the Russian army. This portentous event provided the creative spark for Leos Janácek's Violin Sonata (his only surviving violin sonata; two very early ones he composed in Dresden and Vienna in 1880 are lost). Other works by Janácek in this recital include early pieces from his student years and an arrangement of the delicate mood study "A blown-away Leaf" from his celebrated piano work, On the Overgrown Path. CHOPIN: Late Masterpieces - Stephen Hough (piano) - 19.98 Stephen Hough joins the celebrations for Chopin's 200th birthday with a disc containing much of the composer's most extraordinary music, written in the last years of his life where the expressive possibilities of his art were constantly unfolding and he imbued his favored forms with previously unknown levels of complexity and emotional depth. This disc includes the intoxicatingly ornamented Berceuse Op 57 and the sublime Barcarolle in F sharp major as well as the Polonaise-Fantasy in A flat major and the towering Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor. Also included are two late Nocturnes that demonstrate how Chopin's art had evolved since he first composed in that genre in his youth. The program is completed by a selection of Mazurkas, each a tiny jewel, containing no less mastery than their larger counterparts, and providing moving sonic evidence of the contemplative profundity of Chopin's late style. Stephen Hough's extraordinarily sensitive playing is informed by his limitless technique and engaging musical imagination. O praise the Lord - Restoration Music from Westminster Abbey - Choir of Westminster Abbey, James O'Donnell, Robert Quinney (organ) - 19.98 The Choir of Westminster Abbey under their inspirational director James O'Donnell delve into the Abbey's vaults for this latest fascinating disc. The triumphant mood of the Restoration required much glorious liturgical music, and the Abbey was home to some of the greatest composers and performers of the age. This recording presents music written for-the Choir of Westminster Abbey during the late 1670s and early 1680s. They sing four canticles from the compendious Service in B flat by Henry Purcell, together with psalmody in reconstructed contemporary style, and anthems and motets by Purcell and his contemporary John Blow, who famously both preceded and succeeded Purcell as organist of the Abbey. ROGIER: Missa ego qui sum, Motets - Choir of King's College London, English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, David Trendell - 19.98 Although well known and highly regarded in his lifetime and in the years following his death in 1596, the music of Philippe Rogier is largely unknown today. One of a long line of Flemish composers who worked at the Spanish court, Rogier is one of the most fascinating and rewarding composers of the late sixteenth century. The main work on this disc is parody mass Missa Ego sum qui sum, based on a motet by Gombert. It must rank as one of the finest settings of the Mass ordinary of the late sixteenth century, dazzling in its invention and sheer beauty. Two twelve-part accompanied motets are also recorded here, pointing to a well-developed polychoral tradition at the Spanish court. The much admired Choir of King's College London and their director David Trendell appear in their Hyperion debut. GLINKA: Trio Pathétique; Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio Op.50 - Moscow Rachmaninov Trio - 11.98 "The Moscow Rachmaninov Trio demonstrate what a versatile and capable ensemble they are." - BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE ALBINONI: Oboe Concertos; Vivaldi: Oboe Concertos - Paul Goodwin (oboe), The King's Consort, Robert King - 11.98 "Delightful… played with vivacity and finesse." - GRAMOPHONE SHCHEDRIN: The Enchanted Wanderer - Kristina Kapustinskaya (mezzo-soprano), Evgeny Akimov (tenor), Sergei Aleksashkin (bass), Mariinsky Chorus, Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev - 18.98 Following works by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky, for its fourth release Valery Gergiev's Mariinsky label turns to music by one of Russia's greatest living composers. Shchedrin's concert opera The Enchanted Wanderer was premiered in New York in 2002, but did not receive its Russian premiere until 2007. However it has rapidly entered the Mariinsky Theatre's repertory both in St. Petersburg and on tour. Based on a story by the 19th-century Russian author Nikolai Leskov, the opera is steeped in Russian folklore and beliefs. The release also features four fragments from Shchedrin's 1955 ballet score The Little Humpbacked Horse and his 1963 concerto for orchestra entitled Naughty Limericks. LISZT: Sonata in B Minor - Boris Berezovsky (piano) - 21.98 This disc, a collection of live recordings taken from performances at the Royal Festival Hall and the Festival de la Grange de Meslay, provides yet another example of Boris Berezovsky's stunning virtuosity and musicality. A Liszt recital, the disc features his famous Sonata in B Minor, often considered Liszt's greatest composition for solo piano. Other works include Harmonies du soir, Venezia e Napoli and the Mephisto Waltz No. 1. Berezovsky closes the disc with one encore, the Chopin Waltz, Op.42. CHOPIN: Cello Sonata; ALKAN: Sonate de concert - Tatjana Vassiljeva (cello), Jean-Frédéric Neuburger (piano) - 21.98 Charles-Valentin Alkan's neglected Sonate de concert is the most ambitious work for cello and piano of the Romantic period. Alkan wrote this monumental, virtuosic piece for the great cellist Auguste-Joseph Franchomme. It was for the same musician that Chopin, shortly before his death, composed his Sonata for cello and piano, a crepuscular, tormented work. Cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva and pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger provide their own unique perspective on these seminal works. GLASS: Orange Mountain Music Philip Glass Sampler - Various Artists - 11.98 Orange Mountain Music presents a specially-priced sampler that surveys the great variety of Philip Glass' music drawn from the label's extensive catalog. GLASS: Itaipu, Three Songs for Choir a Capella - Los Angeles Master Chorale, Grant Gershon, Crouch End Festival Chorus, David Temple - 18.98 Itaipu is a large-scale work for orchestra and chorus composed by Philip Glass for the Atlanta Symphony and was premiered there under the baton of Robert Shaw in 1989. Orange Mountain Music presents this re-mastered recording of the work (originally released on RCM) featuring the renowned Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Grant Gershon. Itaipu, a symphonic portrait for chorus and orchestra, was inspired by the giant hydro-electric dam in Brazil and is part of a series of the composer's works involving depictions of man's relationship to nature. The libretto is taken from the creation myth of the Guarani, and is sung in the Guarani language. The album is rounded out by the Crouch End Festival Chorus performing Philip Glass' Three Songs for Choir a Cappella (originally issued on Silva Screen) set to texts by Leonard Cohen, Raymond Levesque and Octavio Paz. La Veillée imaginaire: Airs populaires harmonisés, de Chopin à Canteloube - Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, Françoise Masset, François Lazarevitch - 17.99 The composers of the 19th and 2th centuries were often passionate about popular musical traditions. Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957), Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938), or Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) who said from himself: « I rhythm my music with my ‘Auvergnat's clogs » gave tribute to those popular melodies, by harmonising them with creativity, taste and respect. Listen Polyphonic Chants of Corsica - E Voce di u Comune - 11.99 Nicely priced colletion of Corsican vocal music, great for a first exploration of this wonderful regional style. Vital - Fernando Otero - 16.99 Argentine pianist, composer and bandleader Fernando Otero’s new album for World Village, Vital, is a meditative yet emotionally refractive set of eleven modern chamber music pieces, redolent of new-style tango, twentieth century atonality, sharp-edged downtown jazz, and other sounds Otero picked up at home and on his travels. The opening duet for piano and violin, "Nocturno," is a limping waltz that appears to depict an insomniac’s midnight musings; it leads seamlessly into two succeeding yet unrelated movements. "Siderata," scored for six players including a bandonéon, Argentina’s emblematic squeezebox, is an exercise in stillness, like the uneasy peace that so often precedes a difficult decision. "La Abundancia," another duet, is roundly, ripely melodic; but the wryly titled "Reforma Mental" is scored for eight players and from its opening keyboard arpeggios, depicts a dialogue between voices in conflict, with scampering piano runs periodically overwhelmed by groaning, overbearing horns. Between them, the violin and bandonéon achieve a small universe of sonic color on "Noche Illuminata," while "Fin de Revision" contradicts its title by continuing to mutate and evolve until the final, wheezing exhalation. Listen Til trøst (Comfort me) - Iver Kleive and Aage Kvalbein - 18.99 Using the Steinway grand piano in the Kulturkirken Jakob and a cello, two of Norways greatest musicians have dug deep into the world of melancholy. Kvalbein and Kleive take the listener on a journey through musical gems from classical music, traditional folk songs and well-loved ballads. Istanpitta: Danses florentines du Trecento - Henri Agnel - 18.99 Although the estampies are formally based on the scheme of verse and refrains, they allow for a certain degree of freedom. During the fourteenth century, music was mobile, composed then reinvented: improvisation, ornamentation and the art of preluding were the keynote. Henri Agnel directs the ensemble, and plays cistre, ceterina, oud; joined by Mickael Nick, quinton; Henri Tournier, flûte traversière (bansouri); Djamchid Chemirani, zarb; Idriss Agnel, oud Alla Napoletana, Villanesche & mascherate - Suonare e cantare, Jean Gaillard - 18.99 Inspired by the work of Gian Domenico del Giovane da Nola (1510-1592), organist and later master of the church of the Annunciation in Naples. In addition to a number of madrigals and motets, he left a rich collection of Canzoni Villanesche (1545). These Canzoni Villanesche (or Napolitane) were songs on popular themes, originally written for three voices in the Neapolitan dialect. The texts are characterised by their burlesque or erotic inspiration, usually containing metaphors, popular proverbs, malicious or saucy puns, distorted words and various types of comical or meaningless onomatopoeia. The programme is enriched by a selection of varied instrumental pieces, featuring not only instruments that were fashionable during the Renaissance (recorders, post horns, reed instruments, violas, luths, guitars, percussions and bagpipes), but also typical Neapolitan instruments as colascioni, tammorri, tromba degli zingari and more. Manuscrit Susanne van Soldt: Danses, chansons and psaumes des Flandres, 1599 - Les Witches - 18.99 The source of this music is Susan Van Soldt's manuscript of the end of the 16th century, comprising dances, songs and psalms adapted to the virginal or the harpsichord. Aged 16 when she noted in this copy-book the pieces she probably enjoyed playing at home, Susan was a young protestant who had to leave Flanders for England with her family at this time of raging religious conflict between Christians. The majority of pieces in the manuscript are reductions for the keyboard. Contrary to what is usually the case, the Witches had therefore to imagine, on the basis of these reductions, the «original » versions for instrumental ensembles and hence recreate the tonal colours that we see in Brueghel's country fairs, weddings and village feasts. Claire Michon : flute, Freddy Eichelberger : virginal and organ, Odile Edouard : violin, Pascale Boquet : lute, Sylvie Moquet : viola da gamba, Mickaël Cozien : virginal, Françoise Rivalland : percussion and rommelpot. The surprising programme of this recording revives ballads, love songs or death dances hailing from non-written traditions. At the crossroads between tradition and creation, a result that offers a refreshing new view of the concept of 'popular' music. The recording was made at the Swiss National Museum, which conserves chamber organs formerly used in the wealthy farms of Toggenburg and Emmenthal between 1750 and 1850. The quartet has been challenging and delighting audiences ever since its inception by dividing its time between exploring traditional classical repertoire, new music and fervently adventurous intercultural explorations. Aside from their affiliation with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, Brooklyn Rider has worked with composers such as Chen Yi and Kayhan Kalhor and performers such as violinist Jenny Scheinman and visual artist Kevork Mourad. Jakobmese - Karoline Krüger and Erik Hillestad - 17.99 The mass, a joint venture between Kirkens Bymisjon (Urban Mission) and Studentprestene (Student Ministers) in Oslo was written by Karoline Krüger and Erik Hillestad, and has been performed every Sunday night in the church during the winter months. The idea was to celebrate a mass with no sermon, where the focus would rather be on music, an intimate presentation of Biblical texts and interaction in a warm setting. The ambition of the mass is to create a new liturgical language. The music is delightfully melodious. The cantors and the congregation are accompanied by a band on piano, guitar, bass and drums. Messe for Kari og Ola | Misa Campesina - SKRUK and Katia Cardenal - 18.99 A 'Mass for the Man in the Street' is the Nicaraguan mass by composer Carlos Mejia Godoy. En Forme De Poire - Melonious Quartet - 18.99 The Melonious Quartet, four musicians led by Patrick Vaillant, make an unseemly postulate: the mandolin and Satie. Practising the art of what if, the mandolin quartet has taken on in the painstaking work of transcription of Erik Satie. Completely original and unique. Highly recommended! With mallets and strings - Ildikó Vékony - 17.99 Performances on solo cimbalom of J.S. Bach's 'Partita No. 3 in E major' and 'Sonata No. 1 in G minor.' The artist says: 'Why this music? ...you may ask. Some pieces I have been playing for ages; others I have always wanted to play. Some are not really my world, (but sometimes we long for another world); some are pieces I have been waiting for, and yet I needed years to uncover their deeper meaning. And some have jolted me out of my habits, highlighting for me the moment when a sound is born.' La Passion de Clermont: Hora vos dic vera raizun - Brice Duisit - 17.99 The turn of the first millennium was experienced by people of that time not with fear that the world was coming to an end, but rather with hope that the world would be renewed, as 'the promise of a new Spring'. Thus, Christ's Passion came to symbolise the resurrection of the Church; a great reformation began. Seen in that context the lyric poem La Passion de Clermont takes on its full meaning. Brice Duisit performs vocals and vièle à archet. Une Messe pour la Saint-Michel et tous les saints anges - Freddy Eichelberger, Michel Godard and Ludus Modalis - 17.99 This recording recreates the 'Ordinary' of a seventeenth-century Catholic Mass, during which the organ and the choir continuously respond, with parts entirely improvised by the choir as well as the organ.Freddy Eichelberger, orgue; Michel Godard, serpent and the vocal trio Ludus Modalis Divine Inspiration - Aruna Sairam - 17.99 Indian vocalist Aruna Sairam performs the Carnatic music of South India. Deeply rooted in the region's temple culture with its emphasis on devotional song, Carnatic music stretches back to ancient times and is organized around the system of melodic 'ragam' and rhythmic 'talam' (equivalent to the ragas and talas of Hindustani music). Sairam unites poetry, language, and music from across centuries and from across India itself in nine songs that vary in structure, pace and mood, written by nine poets of different periods and many languages, accompanied by violin, tampura, hand cymbals and a variety of hand drums. Kronomakia - Daniele Sepe, Ensemble Micrologus, Und Rote Jazz Fraktion - 18.99 Neopolitan arranger, composer and saxophone player Sepe, joined by two ensembles, takes on the early music of Italy in his usual shocking style, seamlessly joining jazz, classical and early art music into a beautiful whole. L'engrenage - Louis Sclavis and Quatuor Habanera - 17.99 The composers Alexandros Markeas, Alain Berlaud and Yassen Vodenitcharov, long-standing associates of the Quatuor Habanera, thought out a program of works that would enable the jazz clarinetist Louis Sclavis to contrast and compare his world with that of the Quartet. Each of the scores was created with the idea of enabling him to extemporize his part above those of the four saxophonists. Se canta que recante: Chants des moments perdus en Massif Central - Bruno Bonhoure; La Camera delle Lacrime - 17.99 This recording explores the traditional music of the Occitan-speaking people of south-central France known as the Massif Central as well as the influence that the emigrants to Paris had on the music of their native region. Bruno Bonhoure gives a bold interpretation of some of those songs. He is joined by the charming voice of the Italian singer Patrizia Bovi. Fresh and alive, their interpretation brings out all the intrinsic beauty and lyricism of these pieces, which have all too often been diminished by false authenticity. / Bruno Bonhoure, voix and direction; Jean-luc Tamby, renaissance lute and mandora; Karim Touré, tambour sur cadre, tambourin, bendir and djembes, derbouka à cymbalettes, tambour of Sri Lanka Rayon de Lune, Mélodies andalouses du Moyen-Orient - Ensemble Aromates, Michèle Claude - 17.99 Following his critical triumph of 2005, Jardin de Myrtes, Michèle Claude offers a 2007 recording which lovingly combines the musical idioms of Al Andalous with the timbres of the organetto, the psaltery, the harpsichord and a rich selection of percussion instruments. This disk is at the crossroads, knows of no borders and reminds us that the very character of music is universal. Trobar: Chansons d'amour, de la Vierge à la Dame - Jean-Paul Rigaud and Beatus - 17.99 A program of love songs presents pieces from the repertoire of the monastery of St Martial de Limoges, which includes the earliest written polyphonic compositions that influenced Bernard de Ventadour, one of the finest of the troubadour poets and probably the most important musically. Bernard's songs show an idealistic view of courtly love that is very close to the themes that appear frequently in the monastic tropes referring to the Virgin Mary. Son de los diablos - Tonadas afro-hispanas del Perú - Diana Baroni and Sapukai - 17.99 The record label says 'Far from the stereotypes of pseudo-Peruvians in publicity and the subway, this recording approaches the same sources of Andean music, mixing pre-Colombian music and the contributions of the conquistadores with the music of African slaves brought to the region.' The result is a formal 'art music' approach that finds both the formaility of the composition and the raw energy of the source material. Julemeditasjoner (Christmas meditations) - Aage Kvalbein and Iver Kleive - 18.99 Two Norwegian musicians on piano and cello express the tranquil moods of Christmas. With their extensive experience of interpreting traditional musical material and with a touch of irreverence, these open-minded musicians have toyed with familiar Christmas songs, inserting a classical piece by Vivaldi here and another by Schubert there, to create a mix of well-loved Christmas songs. Chants, Hymns and Dances - Tsabropoulos and Lechner - 16.99 Compositions by Gurdjieff and Vassilis Tsabropoulos, performed by pianist Tsabropoulos and Anja Lechner on violincello. the pieces are boundary crossing experiments in multi-cultural classicism and contemporary minimalism, often mournful, occasionally spritely. Sangam - Trygve Seim - 17.99 A cross-referencing of jazz, contemporary composition and diverse world folk traditions bring this second recording by the Norwegian saxophonist and composer to the forefront of his output. He draws inspiration from musical and non-musical sources both local and far-flung, bringing these influences to bear on compositions and arrangements that are uniquely personal, and executed by a phenomenal ensemble of Håvard Lund clarinet, bass clarinet; Nils Jansen bass saxophone, contrabass clarinet; Arve Henriksen trumpet; Tone Reichelt french horn; Lars Andreas Haug tuba; Frode Haltli accordion; Morten Hannisdal cello; Per Oddvar Johansen drums; Øyvind Brække trombone; Helge Sunde trombone. Videre (2 CDs) - Anders Rogg, Audun Myskja - 24.99 Anders Rogg is an established Norwegian pianist, artist, musician, actor and composer, best known for his membership in the theatre/musical group Tramteatret. Audun Myskja is a medical practitioner who works in the area of musical healing. It all sounds a bit pretentious, but the music is rich and interesting, far from the sleepy yawns of most 'relaxation' music. Officium et Missae in Nativitate Sancti Ioannis Baptistae - Schola Sanctae Sunnivae and Hartkeriana - 24.99 A female choir from Trondheim, Norway and a male choir from Amsterdam presnt works inspired by a thousand years of church music traditions. These internationally recognized choirs have recorded a St. John's officium, a collection of a full days masses and hourly prayers on a double CD set, with music both for midsummer and the nativity. Music in the gregorian tradition, marvelously recorded (as all KKV recordings are), with great spacial presence and accuracy. Sommerlandet - Skruk with Eyvind Skeie - 18.99 The Norwegian vocal ensemble performs music by Azerbaijan composer Galib Mamedov and composer/pianist Tord Gustavsen. This song cycle narrates a beautiful story inspiring hope, joy and gratitude for life and God's promises. Torunn Sævik is the soloist and Cecilie Jørstad narrates the story written by Eyvind Skeie about the young child's journey through the dark valley of death to the summer meadows where the child meets "The one who is waiting". Juleevangeliet - Iver Kleive - 18.99 Ballads of the Sephardic Jews - Sarband - 17.99 Originally released in 2002, this ensemble explores the roots of the Sephardic traditions on these 9 tracks. The online magazine Rambles calls it 'a fine piece of musical archaeology, providing an excellent sample of the cosmopolitanism of medieval Moorish culture.' And 'from the CD notes: 'The traditional songs characteristic of the Sephardic Jews were and still are to this day the romanzas in the Jewish-Spanish tongue - judezmo - which is today sometimes misinterpreted as ladino (a term which actually refers to translations from Hebrew into Spanish: ladinar) and corresponds to djudiyo in the Levante and haketiya in the Maghreb.' Guillaume IX d'Aquitaine: Las Cansos del Coms de Peitieus - Brice Duisit - 17.99 Solo performances by Brice Duisit for voice and vièle à archet. These are presented in a spares, open performance, beautifully recorded to reveal both the beauty and the edge of the instrument and the songs. Kapka - Tara Fuki - 13.99 A contemporary duo of voice and cello, Andrea Konstankiewicz-Nazir and Dorota Barová are joined on a few tracks of this unusual performance by Mario Buzzi (sampler). Kyrie - Iver Kleive - 18.99 Iver Kleive's original compositions are the center of focus on this one (only five of the thirteen tracks come from traditional sources). Kleive's keyboards (church organ, Hammond B3, a grand piano and synthesizers) are acompanied by an interesting ensemble, notably percussion from Paolo Vinaccia on all tracks; Knut Reiersrud guests on three and there are vocal solos and chorales on a number of tracks as well. The play represent the world to which I have been a witness: the world I inherited from my ancestors, the world of war and poverty as experienced at home - unbelievable as it may seem - of those wanting to live and who found the strenght to laugh without second thoughts. Technically, Coppola Rossa is a study of the song as a musical form. It can be interpreted from at least two viewpoints: at first hearing, that of folk tunes, traditional or not. At a second, more in-depht approach, that of the classical processing of material taken from the popular tradition, or at least from my personal tradition: that of somebody in his forties, who grew up with Schoenberg, The Beatles, Debussy, Canfora, Mingus, Berg, Mina, Rota, Chaplin, Satie, Iviani, Brecht.... And so, Coppola Rossa is a tribute to these monuments, which, although intheir death throes, I still feel alive."
