Search tips:
This is a small database, and you will rarely return too many listings, so keep it simple. Your search will be returned only for listings with ALL the words you enter in the serach. So if you put in Poland and jazz, you will only get those listings that meet both criteria. This is a fairly primitive search tool, so don't use punctuation like quotes or commas, and do not use limiters like and and or... they don't help. Finally, only very basic ASCII charaters are readable (like I said, it's primitive), so substitute any letters with diacritical or accent marks with a simpler letter, ie: search Boden instead of Bodén.
If you did not find what you were looking for, do not hesitate to send me an e-mail. I may be able to order it for you. Please contact me - Cliff

Comes in a a small hard-cover book, with charming drawings, and lyrics in Portuguese, with Spanish translation.
Iasis

Iasis - $17.99 (cdRoots# res-iasis)
Roots meets jazz in this unique Greek ensemble's 1996 work
Kristi Stassinopoulou and Stathis Kalyviotis
-
Taxidoscopio - $19.99 (cdRoots# res-stassi07)
These Greek artists are producing global pop without peer, mixing local roots with international sounds and modern technology to create, over the course of the last few years, a completely unique aural pallette that relates to almost no one else. fRoots says: '…a completely unique, utterly recognisable and forward-looking style of their own. And in that distillation, it seems to have become more distinctly Greek - a strange, other-worldly Greekness, for sure, but a 21st century Greekness that's modern within its own culture, out there, ahead and rooted rather than just banging off some local language version of what the globised industry dictates. No predictable Greek rock, Europop or hip-hop here then.'

Ostblocket
-
Yes We Are A Swedish Balkan Band... - $17.99 (cdRoots# cda-ostblocket)
Everybody's doing it, from New York's Zlatne Uste to Japanese jazz artists.... so who not the Swedes. Östblocket join their fellow Swedes The Cerro Esperanza Band in exploring the joys of Balkan rhythms and brass, and succeed rather brilliantly. Far more often focused on authenticity than the Esperanza crew, Ostblocket offer a rollicking, hard edge brass-band sound that can compete with some of the great bands who live on the original turf. fRoots says it is 'a distinctive new mix... [and] smart stuff.'

Sol De Nit
-
B-91 00-SN - $18.99 (cdRoots# soldenit)
Catalan folk and European art music meet calypso and other Latin music in a rich, usually quiet, often contempletive and ultimately unique fusion. "On their debut recording, Catalan folk musicians Sol de Nit resolutely refuse to shout, a strategy that can easily lead to oblivion in an increasingly loud world. But if you can find a quiet niche and some time, B-91 00-SN can not only pleasantly fill it, but delight with its unusual combination of instruments: accordion, bagpipes, a flock of strings, and subtle percussion...B-91 00-SN is testament to the power of subtlety and beauty in music, and to the proverb that if you whisper, people will listen." RootsWorld (This CD is out of print. I have only one copy left)

The Qin is a type of zither, constructed from two pieces of wood; the bottom piece is flat and the top piece is convex. While modern Qin have considerable variety in shape and form, traditional Qin construction was deeply influenced by mystical and symbolic correspondences. For instance, the instrument's length (in Chinese measurements) was said to represent the number of days in the year. The original Qin had only five strings (two strings were added at later dates by various Qin masters), representing the Five Chinese Elements: Wood – mu, Fire - huo, Earth – tu, Metal - jin, and Water – shui. program features performances on actual ancient instruments (including a priceless Tang Dynasty Qin – dating from the 7th century) and draws from a repertoire of more than 1400 years of music from five of China's Imperial dynasties in addition to a contemporary composition. The subtle difference in tone quality, resonance and timber of each instrument provides an exceptional encounter with one of China's most ancient,

Habib Koité and Bamada
-
Muso Ko - $17.99 (cdRoots# hm-wv468055)
1990s classic from the Malian guitarist: 'Guitarist Habib Koite is from Mali, but this rising star represents the contemporary sound of African pop. His first album, which is now being re-released here, is mostly made up of upbeat songs that electrify a variety of regional styles. The accompanying translated lyrics show Koite to be a songwriter that takes on weightier subjects than the usual vacuous party fare. The songs don't translate easily, resembling fables at times, but there is no mistaking the message of his hit, "Cigarette A Bana (The Cigarette is Finished)." Koite's brisk, breezy songs layer call-and-response singing over a seamless mix of African percussion and Western instruments. His academic training shows up most notably in his sophisticated arrangements, which continually change textures, keeping his songs as appealing to the head as the feet.' - Marty Lipp, RootsWorld

Ellika Frissell, one of Sweden's best fiddlers meets Solo Cissokho, a master of the cora from Senegal. Together they make colorful music, where the polska meets the rhythmic flow of the west African harp. These are all duets with no extra musicians, full of lively counter point and interesting, sometimes playful exchanges between two intuitive and inventive musicians.

Ole Paus
-
Sanger Fra Et Hvitmalt Gjerde I Sjelen - $18.99 (cdRoots# kkv-292)
Norwegian contemporary songs. Ole Paus' lyrics tell stories of seduction, vanity, indifference and intimacy, with an ironic twist and a serious tone. The listener might think of the songs as preludes in a minor key to the inevitability and perhaps necessity of a doomsday. Then again, one may also regard them as entertaining or poetically innocuous small sketches of life. From this unique duality comes the power to move the soul, hence the working title's metamorphosis into "Songs from the whitewashed fence of the soul", opening for a much broader and richer interpretation of the songs. 2005 release

Flor de Luna - $18.99 (cdRoots# hm-florluna)
The record label says: Flor de Luna is an offshoot of a group of Latin American musicians who founded La Calaca a few years back. The group's aim was to explore traditional Mexican music. The three founding musicians, Alfonso R. Mosquera (Ecuador), Gildardo Mejia Rodriguez (Mexico) and Gerardo Gutierrez Bernal (Mexico), are all steeped in the music and culture of Latin America. Most of the rhythms used on this record have their roots in traditional Mexican music, however you can also hear elements of music from the Peruvian Andes, of African-influenced music from the Peruvian coast, of Afro-Cuban or Ecuadorian music, and even classical Western instrumental music. Each of the 17 musicians taking part in this CD brings his or her own contribution to the musical whole, with the aim of creating something both original and highly traditional.
