cd cover Mbye, Gottlow and Birgerson
10 Birds in the Woods (cdRescue)
$11.99

They call it 'the Afriscania mix" of Gambian voice and kora with Swedish accordion and guitar. Alagi Mbye is from Serekunda in the Gambia, a kora-master, singer and a storyteller from an old Jali family. From southwestern Sweden, accordionist Roland Gottlow and guitarist Anders Birgerson offer the Scani cool. Most of the tracks were recorded in Roland's home, so the atmosphere is relaxed and natural, a real homspun performance on an imaginary back porch that looks out across the plains of Malmö to the hills of Gambia.

The third in our cdRescue series, this one is different because it was never officially released. This music made its global premiere in the RootsWorld Free Reed Festival in 2000, and it has always bugged me that these songs were never given a proper home on plastic, so I approached the artists and they offered not only the tracks from the original session, but also two bonus tracks recorded later. I think you will enjoy them all.

This is a "made to order" CDR edition, simply packaged with a color injet insert, a printed page of English commentary on each song, packaged in a slim-line jewel case. Please allow a few extra days for shipping.

What the artists have to say:
cd cover "When playing, especially with Alagi, I like to think of music as a bird in my hand. If you grab it and hold it tight the bird will never reach the sky. You have to open your hand and let go." - Roland Gottlow

Alagi Mbye from Serekunda in the Gambia is a one of the greatest kora players, a kora-master, singer and a storyteller from an old Jali family in the Gambia. He is, in the same time true to his tradition but also very creative and open minded. When not on tour he lives with his family in Serekunda. Alagi has since 1991 been visiting Sweden almost once a year doing concerts and also some work for Malmö Academy of music. And from the south of Sweden, accordionist Roland Gottlow and guitarist Anders Birgerson.

"Every time when Alagi is in this region we are doing concerts and radio shows with this Afriscania Mix. I also have met Alagi in Gambia for some concerts and meetings. On one of those trips we made a TV concert for Gambian television that was on the air every Saturday for a long time. In January 2003 we made a new TV show in the Gambia.

"When Alagi came to Sweden, we decided to make a recording of what we are doing together. We met in my home in Höörr, Sweden and invited Jakko Viitala along with his microphones and other things, to make a recording. So we played live in the afternoon. Some weeks later I went to Jakkos place to mix the recorded material and here it is. No more, no less. We hope you like it." - Roland Gottlow

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
