Volume 24 Chorales and Wedding Music from Runö 17.99 For 600 years, right up to the beginning of the 1940s, a Swedish settlement existed on the island of Runö, off the coast of Estonia. There an archaic form of Swedish was spoken and many old customs and practices continued considerably longer than on the mainland. In 1938 Carl-Allan Moberg, the first professor of musicology in Sweden, accompanied the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation on a recording expedition to Runö. Amongst other things they recorded the old folk chorale singing still in existence there at that time - i.e. unison hymns influenced by folk tradition - unique in its combination of words from the hymnbook of 1695 and melodies deviating from those of the officially-prescribed chorale books. On this disc are included 31 of these chorales, as well as wedding music - fiddle tunes played on the island for many generations. Amongst the melodies can be noted Springvals, Vegaleiken, Hlatrobeine and Påldansen.
