Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
Thanks- Cliff, cdRoots

Zegar Zivi
Zegar Zivi (Zegar Lives)
Powerful acapella group vocals, often using the wild beating-against-drone technique of groktenje, diple playing, goat-calling and church-bell ringing from a group of amazingly resilient Serbian singers who've moved back to their village of Žegar in the rocky hill-country of Dalmatia in Croatia – a region war-shattered in the 1990s and still depopulated, but beautiful and now peaceful - to rebuild their homes and pick up the threads of their lives and rich musical traditions. The album's title, and the group's name, means Žegar Lives.Recorded in Žegar in May 2007, produced by Andrew Cronshaw in collaboration with Svetlana Spajić. The digipak contains a 60 page booklet with many photos and extensive notes including the background story to the recordings (in English). Listen

Rail Band w/Salif Keita and Mory Kanté
Volume 2: Mansa
The Malian National Railways formed the Rail Band du Buffet Hôtel de la Gare de Bamako to entertain guests at the hotel adjacent to the central train station in Bamako, but that unpromising origin belied how excellent a band it was and what an impact it made right from the get-go in 1970. The lead singer was a young man named Salif Keita. The band's dynamic fusion of jeliya and other traditional Malian forms with rock, blues and Latin music was audacious and brilliant. Salif Keita went on to start his own band, Les Ambassadeurs, in 1972, but by then another talented singer, Mory Kanté (who really was a jeli and not only sang but also played balafon) had joined the Rail Band. Around the same time the band hired a new guitarist, Djelimady Tounkara. Tounkara now leads the Super Rail Band. The three-volume Rail Band retrospective (compiled by Ibrahima Sylla) is not organized chronologically. Each 2-CD volume includes recordings from the 14-year span of 1970 to1983. Volume 2: Mansa includes five tracks with Salif Keita, five with Mory Kanté (including the title track, a 12-minute epic recorded in 1975), and eight others featuring singers Magan Ganessy or Djelimady Sissoko.

Mats Eden + Tina Quartey
Vagen in (The Way In)
Vägen in presents fiddler Mats Edén and percussionist Tina Quartey in a stunning duet debut. Mats' life-long Värmland traditions and his new interest in neighboring Norwegian melodies is a remarkably intuitive fit for Tina's explorations in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion. With their backgrounds in groundbreaking ensembles like Frifot, Groupa and Filarfolket, it is no surprise that what they deliver is innovative music, challenging and yet deeply rooted in tradition.

Daniele Sepe
Nia maro
I know I say it almost every time he does a recording, but there really is no one like Sepe in the musical world, a composer and musician with a unique vision of his world, both musical and social, and an artist both global and local simultaneously. This recording is one of his more adventuous, and yet it is remarkably also one of his more 'rooted' although those roots spread all across the Mediteranean basin.

Kayhan Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider
Silent City
Kayhan Kalhor has performed and recorded with Iran's greatest singers and instrumentalists and toured the world as a soloist. He co-founded the Dastan, Ghazal and Masters of Persian Music ensembles and has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Lyon, and others. In addition to his work as a performer, Kalhor's compositions have been used for various television and film projects. He is also is an original member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and his works are heard on all of the Ensemble's albums. Three of his recordings, including his two previous World Village releases, Faryad and Without You, were nominated for Grammy® Awards. The innovative, genre-bending string quartet Brooklyn Rider (Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violins, Nicholas Cords, viola and Eric Jacobsen, cello), is named for the members' beloved New York borough and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) — a German expressionist movement that flourished during the early twentieth century. The quartet has been challenging and delighting audiences ever since its inception by dividing its time between exploring traditional classical repertoire, new music and fervently adventurous intercultural explorations. Aside from their affiliation with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, Brooklyn Rider has worked with composers such as Chen Yi and Kayhan Kalhor and performers such as violinist Jenny Scheinman and visual artist Kevork Mourad.

Francesco Banchini
Baqshish
Banchini's previous works have taken him from the study of classical and Medieval music to music therapy to southern Italian folk music to the traditions of Balkans and the Mediterranean. This is a CD bursting with colour and flavour, where original compositions blend with traditional Mediterranean songs and melodies. As well as various types of clarinet he plays nay, flute, chalumeaux, piano, while his own voice broadens the sound further. Accompanying him on the record are a group of fine musicians including Davide Della Monica (guitar), Cristiano Della Monica (percussion), Francesco Migliaccio (accordion) and Manuela Salinaro (darabouka, cajon, frame drums).

Jonas Knutsson and Horn Please
Horn Please!
Swedish folk and horn music on six saxophones, bass and percussion.Led by saxophonist/composer/arranger Jonas Knutsson, some of the prominent younger Swedish folk musicians are presented in music that goes from the traditional to the newly composed, and from the strictly arranged to the wildly improvised. The horn players: Alexandra Särström, Å sa Johansson, Hanna Wiskari, Klas Toresson, Daniel Carlsson; plus Bengt Jonasson and Petter Berndalen on bass and percussion. Compositions by Knutsson and traditional music from different parts of Sweden and South India. Highly recommended

Watcha Clan
Diaspora Hi-Fi - A Mediterranean Caravan
It's been ten years since Watcha Clan burst on to Europe's new world-beat scene. With a best-selling début CD to its credit (20,000 units worldwide), here the Clan whisks us on a wild ride from the dance fl oors of London to France's Provence, from the Balkan mountains to the Maghreb seaside, from roots to rebellion. North and South, Arabic and Hebrew are re-united on this album, which features the exuberant vocals of Marseilles-born Sista K. Diaspora Hi-Fi presents an intoxicating blend of new reggae, jungle and electronic club beats with traditional sounds. Includes a bonus live video version of the Clan's fave, "Eli."

Sacha Silva
Anatomy of a Coup
An unusual ensemble mixes flamenco, Indian classical and modern music with heady questions of personal and political issues, music, as the band says, 'that reads the newspaper.' An original sound, adventurous but rooted in traditions from around the world, and not a hint of "world-beat' or 'world fusion.' Highly recommended

Enzo Favata Tentetto (featuring Tenores di Bitti)
The New Village
Sardinian musician and composer Favata has been roiling the roots-jazz of Italy for decades now, recording Cds and playing more than 2,000 concertsaround the world. He fuses tradition with a contemporary sense, forging a new music form folk, jazz and avant garde elements that are strictly original. He has studied classical and jazz saxophone, plays the soprano, sopranino and tenor sax, and the bass clarinet, as well as other ethnic wind instruments from Sardinia and elsewhere. Adding Latin, African and middle eastern influences, he has come up with a creative and original new sound that pays homage to the jazz greats while being beholden to no one. This recording features the incredible Tenores di Bitti, who offer not only their voices, but the inspiration of their melodies that are infused into the very core of Favata's new compositions.

Kek Lang
Winter Moons, Summer Suns: Romany Songs from Hungary
The gypsy families whose members make up the group all come from a little village near Nyabator in the eastern part of Hungary. Complex vocal folk music accompanied by accordion and guitar with jug or spoon used as percussion.

Susanne Lundeng
Vals til den rode fela
Susanne Lundeng's fourth album, "Vals til den røde fela," is above all a lyrical album, with a great deal of character and a form of expression that Susanne Lundeng keeps on developing. On this recording Susanne has composed all the music herself. Her particular form is deeply rooted in traditional music, but also gathers inspiration and elements from other genres. This is a purely instrumental recording. There are elements of both jazz and rock, and also sense the resonance and musical openness that characterizes contemporary music.

Leonard Bernstein
Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers
This 1971 composition by Leonard Bernstein, commissioned by Jackie Onassis for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., took a stunning, often controversial approach to both the art of classical composition and to the theme of the Catholic Mass. Bernstein (a Jew who was always fascinated by the Catholic liturgy) boldy combines a large orchestra, marching band, mixed chorus, children's choir, dancers and a rock band to explore the sometimes dark, sometimes jubilant nature of The Mass. This beautiful new recording, two hours long and on 2 CDs, is conducted by Kent Nagano.

La Famiglia - Balli di Sardegna

Wonderful recordings by an old master of the Sardinian songs and dances for the organetto (diatonic accordion), long considered a pioneer and innovator of this unique folk music.

Marea cu sarea
- Piccola Banda Ikona
- 18.99
Here is a fascinating journey between the sounds and cultures of the Mediterranean sea in the research for a musical and lyrical language that unites its various populations. They write: "Once upon a time there was a tongue shared by the peoples of the Mediterranean. This was Sabir, a lingua franca which sailors, pirates, fishermen, merchants, ship-owners used in the ports to communicate with each other. From Genoa to Tangiers, from Salonika to Istanbul, from Marseilles to Algiers, from Valencia to Palermo, until the early decades of the twentieth century this kind of sea-faring 'Esperanto' developed little by little availing of terms from Spanish, Italian, French and Arabic. We like this language. We like to mix sounds and words. We play Sabir. We sing Sabir."

Douga Mansa - Mamadou Diabate - 17.99
His reputation as a kora virtuoso and tradition-based musical maverick is well known. In Diabate’s hands, the kora proves capable of infinite variation, encompassing delicately articulated structures, swirling eddies of glissandi, pounding, vertical rhythms and roaring cataracts of arpeggio. On the opening track, an astounding range of simultaneous yet syncopated melodies and rhythms join and separate in a complex clarity that amazes. The 12 selections that follow are all equal to that moment,, showing a rich tradition that lives on in the hands of a master.

Akh Issudar - Terakraft - 17.99
Malian Touoareg ensemble's keening, scratchy singing veers off onto curvy, Islamic-flavored tangents and passages of “talking blues,” discursive chanting, and raucous call-and-response, punctuated by wailing, cries, ululations and even an underlying, buzzing drone. The multi-layered guitars fulfil the image with their rich, sensually tinny chords and lead riffs. They might evoke the Mississippi Delta at high noon, T Rex and the early Stones, and certainly the late Ali Farka Touré, but they are unique and stand apart. This is potent music of the 'desert blues' variety, and highly recommended.

Låter fra Selsø - Selsolater - 16.99
New traditional folk music, originating from the bank of Selsø Lake, west of Copenhagen, Denmark. Svend Erik Pedersen is inspired by the beautiful nature surrounding thearea. The changing colors during the day and throughout the year, as well as the constant sounds from the rich bird life in the lake area, are great sources of inspiration. In Selsølåter the modern and traditional tunes from Danish, Nordic and Irish folk music meet and intertwine.Frankly all good tunes and fiddlers mature by heart. The band members of Selsølåter are all connected to Lirum Larum and the very traditional and living folk music region of Roskilde. Fiddler, mandolinist and composer Pedersen is joine di the band by an group of great violins, , guitar, bass, organ and percussion.

Yderland - Carl Erik Lundgaard - 16.99
Danish diatonic accordionist joined by a wide ranging ensemble of tradtional and modern musicians including Harald Haugaard, Mads Riishede, Christoffer S. Møller and many others. Yderland consists of primarily new material from accordionist Carl Erik Lundgaard, arranged and produced in cooperation with bassist Mads Riishede. The music is expressive, and has stories to tell, both serious and humorous.

Baltic Crossing - Baltic Crossing - 16.99
Baltic Crossing use their strong affinity for old dance music and respect for each others traditions to bring a new youthful energy to the folk music of Europe. Wherever they meet, at least one has to cross the Baltic Sea. The ensemble is Kristian Bugge (DK) on violin; Antti Jarvela (FI) on acocustic bass, mandolin, banjo; Esko Jarvela (FI) on violin, viola; Andy May (UK) on Northumbrian and Uilleann pipes and piano and Ian Stephenson (UK) on guitar, melodeon.

Kocani Orkestar meet Paolo Fresu and Antonello Salis - Kocani, Fresu, Salis - 18.99
This one leaps out to the edge, with the inimitible Balkan brass band joined by two Italian jazz experimenters for a raucous, surprising and completely unexpected set of musical adventures. 60 minures of great music from various live performances during late February and early March of 2004

Ana Hina - Natacha Atlas and Mazeeka Ensemble - 17.99
Singer Natacha Atlas has made her most traditional Arabic recording to date, as acoustic approach that is in direct opposition to her electronic interpretations of Middle Eastern and North African music that are her trademark. Using an ensemble of strings, ney flute, oud, percussion and horns, and Egyptian Gamal Al Kordy on accordion, she pays hommage to a 'golden age' sound from the 50s or 60s in songs both old and new, Arabic and not. The do a stunning English ballad, "Black Is The Colour" with a jazzy, smooth voice, piano and strings arrangement. A Frida Kahlo poem is sung in Spanish in duet with with Clara Sanabras on ukulele. This is a warm, remarkably cohesive and uttlerly charming recording that really gets not only to the root of the music, but to the essentials of a great singer's voice. Highly recommended.

Città Sottili - InChanto - 17.99
The members of InChanto share a common passion for ancient and traditional music, developing a personal repertoire, inspired by their place of origin: Tuscany, a deeply rooted, culture, and also a land receptive to other cultures that have been absorbed and interwoven into the Tuscan sensibility. These songs do not come from formal research or philosophy, but from the desire to offer original music, rooted both in European folk, and in the musical and literary culture of the Italian Renaissance. This 'alchemic sound,' strained through a Mediterranean sensitivity, evokes atmospheres balanced between old and modern, popular and cultured, in which the texts, composed in various languages or inspired by medieval lyrics, are very important.

New Zealand writer Garth Cartwright's 2005 book of the same name explored the music and the culture of the Roma communities surviving in the Balkan countries of Serbia, Macedonia, Romania and Bulgaria. Here is a generous sampler that illuminates the genius of Gypsy music in the Balkans. This who-is-who of Roma musicians includes Taraf de Haidouks, Boban Markovi?, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Toni Iordache, Ko?ani Orkestar, and the inimitable Esma Redžepova, along with a host of unfamiliar voices awaiting discovery.
