Burlesque - Bellowhead
- 17.99
I have tried to tone down the prose to write this description, but what can I do? This is a remarkable recording, a shock to the sytem. fROOTS' Colin Erwin calls it "Astonishing!" It's Brecht meets Childe in Copeland's backyard, chats with Coltrane and dances with brass monkeys. This 11 piece band of notorious trad-arr hipsters (including Spiers and Boden and Benji Kirkpatrick) plays accordions, fiddles and such, punched into high gear by brass band and strings, and all manner of exceptional strangeness ensues. Superb!
Knock at the Knocker, Ring at the Bell - Magpie Lane
- 17.99
As in theor previous holiday recording, Wassail! A Country Christmas (1995), this CD features traditional carols, along with secular songs and dance tunes appropriate for Christmas and the Winter season. Many of the carols were collected from rural singers roughly one hundred years ago; the songs themselves were even then somewhat archaic, and had been left behind by changing popular taste. However some of the songs here, although they date back a couple of centuries, are still sung today, as part of vigorous community carolling traditions.
Tjo - Orust
- 16.99
Orust is Göran Premberg on fiddle, Tomas Larsson on mandola and Johan Kullberg on the accordion. They took their name from the island of the same name on Sweden's west coast, which has been much influenced by the music of England and Scotland. There you will find lots of tunes called Engelska (English) and the rhythms and sounds will be familiar to any fan of traditional English music, yet strangely foreign. It's lively and unique, a refreshing change from either style, and another revelation of how close we all really are once we ignore the little blue borderlines on the maps!

Come Dancing - Climax Ceilidh Band
- 17.99
The band says: "The band started when two trios, Meridian and Pesky, decided to play together in one band and Climax was born. The band prides itself on its fine mixture of self-penned tunes with traditional material and playing 'live' is as exciting for them as for the dancers.... a group of highly skilled musicians who are musically responsive to each other and are able to trust the spontaneity within each of them to take ceilidh music into new dimensions. The driving rhythms of the accordion and guitar, the sweet sound of the dancing fiddles, the swift trill of the flute and the power of the pipes makes the Climax Ceilidh Band experience truly orgasmic." - Anna Tabbush (fiddle), Holly Sheldrake (fiddle), Richard Jones (accordion), Mark 'Swerve' Weaver (guitar) and Chris Walshaw (pipes and whistles)
The Dawn Songs - Vivien Ellis

English Country Garden - Jenny McCormick
- 15.99
This young folk singer from Manchester, England is delicate and honest, and this collection of traditional folk songs and her own trad-inspired originals is a cut above the usual folk-fare. There is nothing startling or avant about this recording, save for the startling realization that simplicity pays off so handsomely. Accompanied primarily by guitar and a marvelously woody acoustic bass, with touches of other instruments sparsely scattered about.

Apples - June Tabor
- 17.99
A 2007 release by Tabor focuses on the traditions again, with Andy Cutting, Mark Emerson and Tim Harries providing a slender, beautiful backing. fRoots says: 'Every bit as mouth-watering as you hoped it would be. June sounds transformed and there’s a lightness in her touch we haven’t heard for a long time. 'The Dancing' is a stunning opening which immediately grabs you and keeps you there throughout the rest of the album. Her understated performance of Lester Simpson’s shudderingly powerful anti-war song 'Standing in Line' merits comparison with her classic recording of 'No Man’s Land'……at her simmering best on another great traditional song, The 'Rigs of Rye.' Ultimately she re-emerges as one of the great song interpreters on an album that puts her squarely back in the folk field.'

- 16.99
fRoots says: 'Something of a watershed album for the splendid Scots band as they unveil their new line-up with their fifth album...If the huge range of styles and influences brand it as experimental then that's merely because so little has been done with sound in this area and their vision and appetite for risk never gets in the way of the basic precepts of the album - to have fun. It's a good-time dance album that clambers effortlessly across continents and traditions to get there.' - Colin Erwin

I conceived it, wrote the new material, played on it, produced it.'

- 16.99
Joe Townsend and Martin Green have recorded an album that walks through the hinterland of jazz, folk, and contemporary music on violin, guitar, accordion, and an array of other instruments such as Mongolian cello, octave violin, musical saw and Fender Rhodes piano. They move from the inspiration of Duke Ellington and Romanian Gypsy music, through the minimalism of Adams and Reich and into the darker regions of English folk music. Through imaginative recording techniques such as the placing of tiny microphones inside instruments, playing the accordion through rotating speakers and using vintage keyboards they have produced a unique voice which is constantly changing yet somehow familiar. There's no explaining it; you simply have to listen.

Mul Sheshe - Fantazia

Add the very welcome top layer of dark chocolatey vocals from Mourad Simba who joined the band in 2002, and you end up with the rich, satisfying texture of their current sound. Fuelled by a base of Maghrebi musical traditions - and with multi-cultural guest performers aplenty - the classy, jazzy brass of Rachel Bartlett on saxes and Bellowhead's Andy Mellon on trumpet give the album a funky party spirit, but without compromising the rai, cha'abi, Berber and Gnawa roots and rhythms of dazzlingly skilful oud player Yazid Fentazi's compositions and the cracking percussion of Karim Dellali.'

Like An Old Fashioned Waltz - Denny, Sandy
- 17.99
2005 digital remastering with 4 bonus tracks, sleevenotes and enhanced packaging. Originally issued on Island in 1973. For her third solo album Sandy was increasingly sure of herself as a songwriter. The gently poignant songs on Like An Old Fashioned Waltz are minor masterpieces. Several of the albums' best songs - including 'Solo,' 'Friends' and the heavily orchestrated 'Carnival' - tap a reflective, confessional mood. Vocally the album captures some beautifully embroidered singing, full of subtle inflections and emotional nuances. The recording and arrangements display a growing assurance that belies the oft-repeated tales of Sandy's nervousness in the studio...Like an Old Fashioned Waltz captures a remarkable artist at the top of her game. - from the liner notes. Bonus Tracks: At the End of the Day, King and Queen of England, Like An Old Fashioned Waltz (unreleased Fairports track from '74), and No End.
Rendezvous - Denny, Sandy
- 17.99
2005 digital remastering with 5 bonus tracks, sleevenotes and enhanced packaging. Originally released on Island in 1977. Rendezvous is a majestic, dignified production, occasionally let down by some over-ripe arrangements. Much of the album was cut with the orchestra and backing band playing together in the studio with guest musicians on the sessions including many long-time Fairport / Fotheringay colleagues and several fellow Island artists who were also recording during the same period, including Steve Winwood of Traffic, John 'Rabbit' Bundrick of Free and Bronco's Jess Roden. Like so many of Sandy's best songs 'All Our Days' has a haunting, melancholy quality; the remarkable seven-and-a-half minute performance on Rendezvous was recorded live with the full orchestra in CBS' expansive Whitfield Street Studios. -from the liner notes. Bonus tracks: Still Waters Run Deep, Full Moon, I'm A Dreamer, Easy To Slip, Moments.

The Trouble With Happiness - John Greaves
- 16.99
Greaves is a multi-talented artist, known to some as the virtuoso bass player in some of the more interesting progressive groups of the 1970s - Henry Cow, National Health - and to others as a singer/songwriter, and crafter of sophisticated, witty and beautiful songs. This distinction may mislead one into thinking that there have been two (or more) very distinct phases in his career, yet John Greaves has always stood at the crossroads of several musical traditions, which he has fused into a highly distinctive body of work. He has released a number of solo albums and has appeared on albums by Peter Blegvad, Slapp Happy, Soft Heap, Michael Mantler, Michael Nyman, Pip Pyle and Robert Wyatt. Greaves was a key contributor to a musical movement that attempted to break away from the limitations of the rock format, by integrating elements of classical conceptualization as well as totally free improvisation, a dimension that set Henry Cow apart and firmly established the band's place in rock history.
