Manuscrit Susanne van Soldt: Danses, chansons and psaumes des Flandres, 1599 - Les Witches - 18.99 The source of this music is Susan Van Soldt's manuscript of the end of the 16th century, comprising dances, songs and psalms adapted to the virginal or the harpsichord. Aged 16 when she noted in this copy-book the pieces she probably enjoyed playing at home, Susan was a young protestant who had to leave Flanders for England with her family at this time of raging religious conflict between Christians. The majority of pieces in the manuscript are reductions for the keyboard. Contrary to what is usually the case, the Witches had therefore to imagine, on the basis of these reductions, the «original » versions for instrumental ensembles and hence recreate the tonal colours that we see in Brueghel's country fairs, weddings and village feasts. Come Dancing - Climax Ceilidh Band - 17.99 The band says: "The band started when two trios, Meridian and Pesky, decided to play together in one band and Climax was born. The band prides itself on its fine mixture of self-penned tunes with traditional material and playing 'live' is as exciting for them as for the dancers.... a group of highly skilled musicians who are musically responsive to each other and are able to trust the spontaneity within each of them to take ceilidh music into new dimensions. The driving rhythms of the accordion and guitar, the sweet sound of the dancing fiddles, the swift trill of the flute and the power of the pipes makes the Climax Ceilidh Band experience truly orgasmic." - Anna Tabbush (fiddle), Holly Sheldrake (fiddle), Richard Jones (accordion), Mark 'Swerve' Weaver (guitar) and Chris Walshaw (pipes and whistles) The Dawn Songs - Vivien Ellis - 17.99 Well known for her work with Alva, Sinfonye and The Dufay Collective, she is equally at ease with world music, mediaeval songs and contemporary ballads she interprets an astonishing range of material in her new, multi-genre CD. The album encompasses the English tradition, Brazilian samba; Appalachian spiritual; troubadour song in Occitan; Irish, Scots/Gaelic and Bulgarian folk music, as well as new dawn songs by contemporary writers. With instrumentation that includes fiddle, accordion, guitars, drums and electric bass, lute and viol, loops and effects – this is a richly varied album that embraces both the spare beauty of ancient song and full-on 21st century soundscapes. Rising For The Moon - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue House Full - Live at the LA Troubadour - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue Heyday (The BBC Sessions) - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue, Liege and Lief - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue Unhalfbricking - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue Hokey Pokey - Thompson, Richard And Linda - 12.99 New Island reissue Angel Delight - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue Babbacome Lee - Fairport Convention - 12.99 New Island reissue Like An Old Fashioned Waltz - Denny, Sandy - 12.99 2005 digital remastering with 4 bonus tracks, sleevenotes and enhanced packaging. Originally issued on Island in 1973. For her third solo album Sandy was increasingly sure of herself as a songwriter. The gently poignant songs on Like An Old Fashioned Waltz are minor masterpieces. Several of the albums' best songs - including 'Solo,' 'Friends' and the heavily orchestrated 'Carnival' - tap a reflective, confessional mood. Vocally the album captures some beautifully embroidered singing, full of subtle inflections and emotional nuances. The recording and arrangements display a growing assurance that belies the oft-repeated tales of Sandy's nervousness in the studio...Like an Old Fashioned Waltz captures a remarkable artist at the top of her game. - from the liner notes. Bonus Tracks: At the End of the Day, King and Queen of England, Like An Old Fashioned Waltz (unreleased Fairports track from '74), and No End. Rendezvous - Denny, Sandy - 12.99 2005 digital remastering with 5 bonus tracks, sleevenotes and enhanced packaging. Originally released on Island in 1977. Rendezvous is a majestic, dignified production, occasionally let down by some over-ripe arrangements. Much of the album was cut with the orchestra and backing band playing together in the studio with guest musicians on the sessions including many long-time Fairport / Fotheringay colleagues and several fellow Island artists who were also recording during the same period, including Steve Winwood of Traffic, John 'Rabbit' Bundrick of Free and Bronco's Jess Roden. Like so many of Sandy's best songs 'All Our Days' has a haunting, melancholy quality; the remarkable seven-and-a-half minute performance on Rendezvous was recorded live with the full orchestra in CBS' expansive Whitfield Street Studios. -from the liner notes. Bonus tracks: Still Waters Run Deep, Full Moon, I'm A Dreamer, Easy To Slip, Moments. English Country Garden - Jenny McCormick - 15.99 This young folk singer from Manchester, England is delicate and honest, and this collection of traditional folk songs and her own trad-inspired originals is a cut above the usual folk-fare. There is nothing startling or avant about this recording, save for the startling realization that simplicity pays off so handsomely. Accompanied primarily by guitar and a marvelously woody acoustic bass, with touches of other instruments sparsely scattered about. Return to the Woods - Joe Townsend and Martin Green - 16.99 Joe Townsend and Martin Green have recorded an album that walks through the hinterland of jazz, folk, and contemporary music on violin, guitar, accordion, and an array of other instruments such as Mongolian cello, octave violin, musical saw and Fender Rhodes piano. They move from the inspiration of Duke Ellington and Romanian Gypsy music, through the minimalism of Adams and Reich and into the darker regions of English folk music. Through imaginative recording techniques such as the placing of tiny microphones inside instruments, playing the accordion through rotating speakers and using vintage keyboards they have produced a unique voice which is constantly changing yet somehow familiar. There's no explaining it; you simply have to listen. Songs Across Walls of Separation - various - 19.99 We have built walls around ourselves for centuries, trying (futilely) to protect ourselves from 'contamination.' Pack of Jokers - Whapweasel - 17.99 The 2005 edition of English folk-rock dance band Whapweasel is as good as the last, a stacked deck of guitars, horns, melodeons, keyboards, fiddles, cittern, bass and drums. Again produced by Steeleye-er Rick Kemp (whose guitar is also in the mix), the 'weasels deal a trump hand that will get your feet moving and your head spinning. Burlesque - Bellowhead - 17.99 I have tried to tone down the prose to write this description, but what can I do? This is a remarkable recording, a shock to the sytem. fROOTS' Colin Erwin calls it "Astonishing!" It's Brecht meets Childe in Copeland's backyard, chats with Coltrane and dances with brass monkeys. This 11 piece band of notorious trad-arr hipsters (including Spiers and Boden and Benji Kirkpatrick) plays accordions, fiddles and such, punched into high gear by brass band and strings, and all manner of exceptional strangeness ensues. It's all traditional, in a sense, but like nothing you have heard before. Bonus: the package is a small, lovely hardcover book with lyrics, photos (wild!) and more. Live At Shepherds Bush Empire (PAL DVD) - Bellowhead - 24.99 The carnival folk big band are captured live during their Burlesque tour at their sold-out London Shepherds Bush Empire show on September 26th 2007. This is the first ever official DVD from the much loved 11-piece group. PAL DVD Only The Big Session Volume 1 - Oysterband and friends - 17.99 In May of 2004 Oysterband were joined for live sessions in London, in front of a small audience by a mighty cast - June Tabor, Phil Beer and Steve Knightley, Eliza Carthy and Ben Ivitsky, Jim Moray, James O'Grady and visiting American-gothick originals The Handsome Family, and they performed all sorts of familiar and unfamiliar material together over the three nights. These 15 tracks are from those concerts. Tales of Love, War and Death by Hanging - Ray Cooper - 17.99 Known to most people as Chopper, Ray Cooper has been a longstanding member of the award winning group Oysterband. Cooper's solo album debut shows his voice off to full effect as well as his song writing and multi-instrumental skills. Although most of the songs are self penned, there is a generous sprinkling of traditional material from Scotland and Sweden. The heart of the album lies somewhere between the old world and the new, at times giving a pithy relevance to events that happened in the distant past. Rising Road - John Jones - 13.99 With seven traditional songs, four written by John, and one from the Oysterband vaults, Jones' first solo outing features Seth Lakeman (tenor guitar, fiddle, vocal), Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, piano, vocal), former Oysterman Ian Kearey (banjo-dulcimer), Rowan Godel (vocal), Sophie Walsh (harp) and Francois Deville (pedal steel) as well as homeboys Dil Davies (drums), Alan Prosser (guitars) and producer Al Scott.
