Liam Bailey
Flesh + Armor (Mad River)
$15.99
Pure pop with American roots - not my usual catalog addition, but I make exceptions for musicians with a wry outlook, an unusual voice and a certain sense of production restraint. Liam and his team of musicians have all of this working for them, so if you have the occasional, selective, soft spot for intelligent pop music like I do, you might want to give this one a listen.

Press from the artist:
Bailey's musical talents run the gamut from fiddle to electric and acoustic guitar to the mandolin with musical influences drawn from the worlds of classical, jazz, Irish and bluegrass music. He has long been a fixture on the East Coast circuit, playing in rock bands, Celtic bands and bluegrass bands such as the Stump Jumpers in which he played mandolin, fiddle and guitar, the Uncledad String Band, and Hoe, a regular at the Acoustic Café in Black Rock, Connecticut. Additionally, he has toured as backup for artists Mike Benjamin, Liz McNichol, Marc Berardo and Charlotte Kendrick with whom he will be touring the East Coast in early 2006.
A graduate of Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Bailey has always written songs but singing has come to him more recently. His songwriting reflects the diversity of his jazz, classical and bluegrass backgrounds and his voice is both expressive and soulful. Josh Mammis of the Stamford Advocate writes "Liam Bailey has wrapped locals' hearts with his heart-wrenching melodies..."
The CD's eleven tracks were performed live in the studio in the course of two days. "I feel that the magic of music is in the moment," say Bailey who formed his band from musicians he'd played with in various guises previously and who went into the studio after only two days of rehearsal. "Before the last 100 years, music existed in a single moment and couldn't be altered," explains Bailey. "Retaining the purity of that music by recording the CD live, really interested me."
Accompanying Bailey on "flesh + armor" are Jimmy Ryan (mandolin, octave mandolin), Chad Kelly (piano, Wurlitzer piano), Judd Fuller (fretless bass, z-bass) and Rohin Khelmani (drums, percussion).

Please note!
Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
