An interesting and personal collection of what is going on in the ever so vaguely defined "roots music" scene in Spain in this century, put together by Spanish Radio 3 DJ José Miguel López. His explanation is simple and enticingly vague: "Discópolis therefore became a programme of Ritmos Étnicos: everything that, based on tradition, is capable of becoming something modern, using state-of-the-art instruments and mixing them with any other type of aesthetics on a totally equal basis."

The choice of artists is impeccable, the track sequencing is gorgeous and as central to the whole idea as the indivdual artists, a whos-who of the current Spanish roots movement: Radio Tarifa, Manuel Imán, Susana Seivane, Tomás San Miguel, El Coro Samaniego, Oreka TX, Kepa Junkera, Justin Vali, Luís Delgado, Mareim Hassan, Itri Moraima brothers, Albert Plá with Jaleo, Kike Perdomo, Eliseo Parra, L'Ham de Foc, Rasha, Alboka, Berrogüetto.

The opening track is an ear-opening mix up that features Ignacio Scola, Gregorio Paniagua, Rita Marley, Hijas del Sol, Suso Sáiz, el Orfeón Donostiarra and the Ikastola de Irún Children’s Choir.

Detailed notes in Spanish and English cover all of the tracks and artists, as well as a personable tour of the concept by Lopez.

The official press release:
«A cosmopolitan and open journey through the world of music» is the subtitle of the first record (and we hope that it is not the last) with music from DISCOPOLIS, the programme that José Miguel López has been directing and presenting on Radio 3, Radio National de España, since the 5th January 1987. This year is the 15th anniversary of the programme and this record, with music from a selection of artists, is being released to mark this occasion. As José Miguel López himself writes in his introduction, «Discópolis therefore became a programme of Ritmos Étnicos: everything that, based on tradition, is capable of becoming something modern, using state-of-the-art instruments and mixing them with any other type of aesthetics on a totally equal basis».

With this idea in mind, and with Spain being the strategic map and centre of operations, the journalist set off on his journey at the steering wheel of a multi-racial taxi and chose a selection of 15 numbers, some of which are truly exotic and unique, such as 'Navigation', which is the first track on this selection and which only features Ignacio Scola, Gregorio Paniagua, Rita Marley, Hijas del Sol, Suso Sáiz, el Orfeón Donostiarra and the Ikastola de Irún Children’s Choir.

Groups, solo and instrumental artists, who are either Spanish or foreigners living in Spain, of the stature of Radio Tarifa, Manuel Imán, Susana Seivane, Tomás San Miguel, El Coro Samaniego, the Txalapartaris Oreka TX, Kepa Junquera, Justin Vali, Luís Delgado, Mareim Hassan, Itri Moraima brothers, Albert Plá with Jaleo, Kike Perdomo, Eliseo Parra, L'Ham de Foc, Rasha, Alboka and Berrogüetto. So, as José Miguel says on his programme every day, Enjoy and be!

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
