"Brilliant piper Budiño's first album, Paralaia, remains a fresh, incisive and melodic tour de force. Not one to stand still and reiterate, since then he has explored other sounds and approaches. For this third album, all his own composition but naturally deeply rooted in Galician music and culture, he's moved into doing much of his own engineering. That includes rhythm programming and the injection of samples from field recordings made around Galicia by Alan Lomax and Mercedes Peón, from news reports of the Prestige oil spill, and from the 1941 speech to Galician exiles by artist Alfonso Castelao that gives the album its title, which translates as "The Juice Of The Land".
At first listen, there's an impression of rather a lot of thick, thudding programmed percussion that seems somewhat retrogressive. Once past the first couple of tracks, though, the finer details start to emerge; young Cape Verdean/ Portuguese singer Sara Tavares (whose own showcase at Womex 2002 was a delight) delivering Uxía Senlle's lyrics in Na Liña da Maré, the light Brazilian voice of Lilian Vieira on Quérome Salvar, and the winding tune Arrieiros Somos featuring Budiño's own multitracked vocals and the fiddle of Jacky Molard. And there's no doubt of Budiño's high skill and strong character as a piper, here using Galician, Bulgarian and uilleann versions. His programming and piping come together particularly well on the deep swing of Burbullas á Grella. The 13th track isn't listed nor details given, but it's a catchy, attractive multilingual singalong with breaks taken by Galician, West African and Hindi vocalists, Karen Matheson in a burst of Gaelic puirt-a-beul and the instantly identifiable soaring wail of Mercedes Peón, returning to grace this album as she did Budiño's first and second. - Andrew Cronshaw, fRoots |
Press from the artist:
In ZUME DE TERRA, the intention is not to re-interpret or recreate tradition, but to create something totally new, while at the same time retaining respect for the past.
In this album the tradition is represented in the form of samples, the aural snapshots of history. Extracts from recordings such as those made by the american musicologist Alan Lomax in the 50's, the "raiceiras" collection directed by Mercedes Peon, the audio postcard sent by the famous artist, activist and intellectual Alfonso Castelao to exiled galicians in 1941, and news reports of the recent oilspill from the "Prestige" which brought tragedy to the galician coast serve, amongst others, as the launch-pad and inspiration for this work.
For XOSé MANUEL BUDIñO the music, like life itself, is a balance between interpretation and creation. Perhaps this is one of those moments where an artist thinks that we have interpreted and re-hashed the past too much and too often, and that the time has come to face the future with new ideas and new solutions in order to counteract the mind-numbing effect of the "loops" which bombard us every day in commercial pop music and jingles.
ZUME DE TERRA is not just a CD of original music, in some ways it is a completely new concept in the approach to galician music.
ZUME DE TERRA is fresh and new because that's what it sets out to be, even though on first listen we can soon start to recognize many musical, aesthetic and conceptual flavours found in the "global market". Alfonso Castelao sums up the essence of this approach in his eloquent speech to the exiles in Montevideo: ..."This work of mine is no more than an artistic experiment, but, even if it were to be translated into every language in the world, it will always retain its galician identity because it is made from the juice of the land and the honey of galician tradition..."
XOSé MANUEL BUDIñO wanted this album to fully reflect his own personal artistic vision so, unlike his previous CD's, he has not worked with an outside producer. Budiño set sail on a solitary journey where his own conviction and his contrasting qualities as a musician serve as both the compass and the wind in the sails of this voyage.
But ZUME DE TERRA is also the fruit of juices squeezed by other hands, hands of help and co-operation, hands of differing colours and flavours coming together to make a cocktail which has you hooked from the first sip; a unique taste, bittersweet, subtle yet intense, intrinsically galician yet with universal appeal. To achieve this Budiño has called on the skills of geographically scattered collaborators, musicians who we discover as we savour the taste of every sweet gulp...
The Breton maestro Jacky Molard contributes his violin artistry, the Scottish group Capercaillie and Michael McGoldrick add zest to the track "Galo Galán", portuguese musician and producer Julio Pereira plays bandolín on "Santiago-Lisboa", vocals are provided by Sara Tavares (Cabo Verde) and brazilian singer Lilian Vieira (Zuco 103), and lyrics come from the pens of Uxía Senlle (Na liña da maré) and Manolo Cortés (Quérome salvar).
ZUME DE TERRA (JUICE OF THE LAND): is the new album from XOSé MANUEL BUDIñO, the third in his recording career and the first in which this galician artist has assumed the roles of composer, arranger, producer and recording engineer.
ZUME DE TERRA reflects the creative restlessness of a non-conformist musician who takes innovation as the starting point for his work.

Most CDs have been
imported from Europe or Asia.
They are not all
shrink-wrapped, and I am not
going to con you by wrapping them
here just to make you think they
have been sterilized in America.
We guarantee that the CDs and the
contents are all brand new and in
perfect condition. Whenever I
can, I use recycled shipping
materials. They may not look as
pretty on the outside, but they save
money and keep the trash dumps a
little bit emptier.
