cd cover Berrogüetto
10.0 (Boa)
$17.99

The long-awaited return of this superb Galician band, celebrating their 10th year (2006) with a recording of 10 all new works. As always, it's different form the previous recordings. Less experimental than Hepta, more sparse than Viaxe por Urticaria, this offers a lot more spare acoustic sounds, although the lush sound of previous recordings does still appear here and there on 10.0. Excellent as always, this band always comes highly recommended!
As with all Berroguetto recordings, this first edition is beautifully packaged in an elegant, artistic digi-pak with notes in English, Spanish and Galician.

More about and more recordings by Berrogüetto

About the band: a history in their own words:
The epic voyage of Berroguetto began in 1996 in Galicia, the land of sailors and farmers on the green northwest coast of the Iberian peninsula, when six musicians from diverse backgrounds came together with the intention of taking the celtic music tradition of their country a step further into the future and into the outside world. Drawing on the reserves of a language and tradition which had been suppressed for 40 years under General Franco’s spanish state they breathed new life into these sounds, melodies and rhythms and, right from the outset, astounded their audiences with performances full of sparkling vitality.

Gradually the word started spreading outside the boundaries of their native country, and the first album Navicularia (Boa records 1996) brought them to the attention of the European public, receiving various awards: German Music Critics Award- best world music album (1997), the “Eisener Eversteiner Prize” (1998) of the german “Profolk” world music association for Best European Folk Act and the “Ideal” prize in 1997 for best newcomer act. The live presentations of Navicularia include the special collaboration of the 6 girl singers/percussionists from the traditional group “Cantigas e Agarimos” from Santiago de Compostela.

The second album Viaxe por Urticaria (Boa 1999) sees the incorporation of singer, piper and percussionist Guadi Galego into the crew, and together they set sail for the concert halls and festivals of Europe, with successful tours of Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and the UK. For this CD Berrogüetto also call on the assistance of special guests Javier Paxariño on flutes, Paco Dicenta on bass and, from the Basque Country, Rubén Isasi and Iñaki Plaza, expert “txalaparta” duo. (Basque marimba made from wood and stone).

2001 saw the release of the third and most adventurous album Hepta, this time combining the music with a special arts project involving the popular contemporary French artist George Rousse whose work combines architecture, painting and photography. Hepta is an amalgam of different artistic media, a combined participation of artists and institutions, with the special collaboration of the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea. Aside from the visual aspects of the project, the CD also includes the work of international guest musicians: Jivan Gasparyan (Armenia), master of the Duduk- the haunting armenian flute, Kalman Balogh (Hungary) on Cimbalon, Markus Svensson (Sweden) on Nickelharp, Kin García on Double and Electric Bass, Xavier Díaz as guest vocalist and the veteran harmonica player Luís Palacín.

Once again the CD was received with great critical acclaim, gaining for the second time the German Critics Award (2001) for best world music act, the “Opinión” Prize 2001 for best folk album, as well as being nominated for the spanish “Music, Arts and Stage Academy” award for best album in Galician language, and the best folk album category in the Latin Grammy Awards 2002.

Now, as they approach their 10th anniversary, Berrogüetto present their 4th album, with the intention of living up to the expectations of their many followers. This album released 2006 will coincide with the culmination of a parallel project known as DeSolASons. (The title is a play on words: de sol a sons- from the sun to the sound and desolación- desolation.)

The seeds of this project were sown in 1998 when the audio-visual production company “Productora Faro” invited Berrogüetto to compose the soundtrack for a series of programmes about alternative energy. The twist of this idea was that the soundtrack would be recorded using only solar energy in a specially assembled studio on the beautiful and remote Cies Islands off the Galician coast. A crew of 40 people spent a week filming and recording in this nature reserve, and the results were transmitted on the digital channel “Canal+” in Spain. Four years later this idyllic location was transformed overnight into the centre of the worst marine ecological disaster ever experienced in Europe when the tanker “Prestige” split in half and sank with its cargo of 170,000 tons of crude oil, spreading contamination from the north of Portugal to the coast of Brittany. The Galician coastline was particularly hard hit, being repeatedly covered in the “black tide”, and the working lives of thousands of families who depend on the sea for their livelihood were brought to a halt.

The sense of frustration and desolation with this catastrophe inspired the group to reconsider the original project (previously titled “Renovart”) with fresh eyes and, in collaboration with the Youth Orchestra of Catalunya, the music was orchestrated and performed live for the first time in the Auditorio de Galicia in the form of a suite. Berrogüetto are currently preparing an environmental education project promoting the use of alternative energy sources to coincide with the release of a recording of DeSolASons in 2006.

In this their 10th anniversary year Berrogüetto continue navegating the undiscovered musical oceans and exploring new combinations of arts and communication.

Please note!
Most CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. We guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
