Amigo Music

Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
Thanks- Cliff, cdRoots

 Alwa - Alwa $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-alwa)
The premier recording by this Swedish quintet is really quite stunning: a moody, sophisticated sound on the one had, a raw energy on the other, all mixed together with an adventurous atmosphere not unlike that created in the last days of Filarfolket. The ensemble is Anna Elwing (violin and vocals), Jonas Göransson (guitars), Karin Ohlsson (violin, viola), Tina Quartey (percussion) Torbjörn Richard (saxes, flutes).
 Ambra - Kalaniemi and Alakotila $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-ambra)

Swedish melodeon and violin music from Varmland, Sweden
 Struling - Mats Eden $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-eden-struling)
The great Varmland fiddler's first solo recording. It features lots of great solo fiddling from Eden (and a bit of accordion, too), plus ensemble work with a then-as-now all-star cast of musicians: Tina Johansson, Ellika Frisell, Rickard Astrom and Stefan Ekedahl offering percussion, violin, piano and cello. The music runs from strict traditional Swedish tunes to a tribute to Gambian musician Alagi M'Bye. This was cutting edge when it was made, and it is still unique and powerful music all these years later.
 Orustlater - Goran Premberg $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-gcd61)
The island of Orust in Bohuslan has a rich tradition of fiddlers and many associations with the British Isles. Goran Premberg has taken this as his starting point on his first solo album, which is entirely devoted to tunes from Orust. The CD is dedicated to David Andersson (1904-1994) with whom Goran managed to spend a few musical summers.
 Imeland - Groupa $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-groupa-imeland)
The Swedish supergroups 1995 recording, with Eden, Astrom, Simonson and Tina Johansson doing the percussion

 Trad - Niss Kerstin $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-kerstin)
This interpretation of the poetry of Nobel laureate Harry Martinson is one of the most successful folk-fusions of Sweden, with a rich, organic quality that is still adventurous and unusual. Deep folk roots, hints of jazz and classical strains, a dark brroding quality at one moment, a bright, almost dewey quality the next. Coupled with a heady ensemble and sensitive prodcution, this is a must-have for fans of new Swedish music.
 Gogo 4 - Pinnin Pojat $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-pinnin)
Arto Jarvela and Kimmo Pohjonen offer a curious series of duets that are at once folky and bizarre, for accordion, harmonica, fiddle, mandolin, nyckleharpa, voices and various unexpected instruments. Kip Peltoniemi offers guest vocals on his Minnesota Tango.
 Den overste Toppen - Spunk $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-spunk)
Avant garde? Ambient noise? Gentle musical mayhem? Words fail.
 Mosquito Hunter - Swap $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-swap)
The North-Euro connection band of the 90s is back with their millennial intro, and it's an elegant and marvelous thing. Ola Bäckström (fiddle), Karen Tweed (accordion), Ian Carr (guitar) and Carina Normansson (fiddle, vocals) bring together the traditions from their respective homes and add a gernerous dose of original writing, inventive arrranging and above all, brilliant performances to create one of the most endearing fusions of European folk around.
 Flyt - Frifot $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-frifot07)
The super-group of Nordic roots music returns in 2007 with another fantastic release. Per Gudmundson, Ale Möller and Lena Willemark pretty well define the new folk-movement in Sweden, and this release finds them returning to a rougher, rootsier sound. Highly recommended.
 Visor fran Vinden - Sofia Karlsson $16.99 (cdRoots# amigo-sofia3)
The third recording by the Swedish folk singer
Amigo Finland CD 1010 - Herman The German and Das Cowboys $15.99 (cdRoots# amigo-herman)
Finnish rock legends
 Bodjal - Ale Moller Band $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-bodjal)
Ale Möller comes full circle. From the bouzoukispellman who learned Swedish folk music on a Greek instrument so many years ago comes a stunning new album of music that leans heavily on those Greek roots, and then explodes across the continents. With Maria Stellas and Mamadou Sene on vocals, a core band of Moller's strings, accordion, flutes and voice, Magnus Stinnerbom (fiddles, mandolin), Sebatian Dube (bass) and Rafael Sida Hulzar (percussion). My 'Record of the Year' for 2004. Highly recommended
Traditional Swedish music for fiddles and munspel - Thore and Thuva Hardelin $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-hardelin)
Finally available again! The Hardelins's fiddles are joined by Anders Olsson (jew's harp) on traditional tunes
Jazzen - Nina Ramsby and Martin Hederos $16.99 (cdRoots# amigo-jazzen)
Singer Nina Ramsby and pianist Martin Hederos first met in 2000 and began singing casually together. In January 2004 recorded Visorna, a collection of their favorite songs in Swedish. In the spring of 2005 they began work on this new recording, Jazzen, featuring their own unique takes on jazz standards by notable jazz performers like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Sade and Betty Carter. Nina has rewritten the lyrics in Swedish, to suit her own needs and experiences. These are bare, sometimes stark performances, mostly simply piano and voice, with occasional string, harmonica, reed and brass punctuations that envelope the voice and allow it room to expand and contract as it needs. They also have 2 original pieces (one song, one instrumental), which to my ear, are some of the best pieces on the CD.
File under: folk music Sweden - various $15.99 (cdRoots# amigo-folk)
Compilation of Amigo label recordings includes Frifot, Kalaniemi and Ahlback, Swap, Alwa, Sofia Karlsson, Harv and many others
Top Quality Bones And A Little Terrorist - Britta Persson $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-2042)
A curious Swedish pop recording (sung in English) by a unique voice with a unusual song writing style. She accompanied by a mostly acoustic ensemble that is equally comfortable with rock, pop and jazz.
Visorna - Nina Ramsby and Martin Hederos $15.99 (cdRoots# amigo-visorna)
Vocalist/guitarist Nina Ramsby and pianist Martin Hederos offer a new perspective on Swedish popular songs. On this, their first recording together, they have chosen to interpret the classics from the 70s by singer/songwriters like Cornelis Vreeswijk, Fred Åkerström, Olle Adolphson as well as more recent material by, in this context, less obvious contemporary artists like Eva Dahlgren and Bo Kaspers. A unique and personal sound from Sweden.
Vagen in (The Way In) - Mats Eden + Tina Quartey $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-vagen)
Vägen in presents fiddler Mats Edén and percussionist Tina Quartey in a stunning duet debut. Mats’ life-long Värmland traditions and his new interest in neighboring Norwegian melodies is a remarkably intuitive fit for Tina's explorations in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion. With their backgrounds in groundbreaking ensembles like Frifot, Groupa and Filarfolket, it is no surprise that what they deliver is innovative music, challenging and yet deeply rooted in tradition.
 Tokyo Concert - Maria Kalaniemi Trio $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-tokyo)
Maria Kalaniemi; accordion / Timo Alakotila; piano / Olli Varis; guitar / A live recording by three of Finland's best musicians, original compositions, excellent playing, possibly the best thing this group has done to date.
Nar som graset det vajar - Lena Willemark $17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-narsom)
The long out of print classic recording by the Swedish singer is her most traditional, accompanied by her own violin and those of Bjorn Stabbi, Kalle Almlof, Verf Lena Egardt and Per Gundmundson (who also plays bagpipes), and Ale Moller on bouzouki and jew's harp. När som gräset det vajar is a treasure to be rediscovered.
 Raga Pulia-Kalyan - Pandit Ram Narayan $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-901)
Pandit Ram Narayan, brother of Chatur Lal, the first tabla player to impress the western world on a larger scale in the company of Ravi Shankar, ranks among the most eminent sarangi players of today. His novel style of musical expression has changed the role of the sarangi forever, from that of an accompaning instrument to a full grown solo instrument. Take particular note of his alap in Puria Kalyan, perhaps the best this writer has heard him play.
Ragas Shuddh-Sarang and Piloo Ka - Ustad Amjad Ali Khan $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-902)
Sarod Master Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is the son of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan and comes from a family of Great Music Masters whose artistic lineage goes back five generations. His style is thoroughly original, his greatest contribution to the Sarod is probably to have taken his inspiration from vocal music in forming his recitals and phrasing.
 Ragas Madhukans and Piloo - K. Sridhar $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-903)
One of today's finest exponents of the Sarod, Krishnamurti Sridhar was, from very early childhood, initiated into the Carnatic music and is one of very few South Indians to have made North Indian music their playing ground. From the age of five Sridhar was the student of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar of the Dagar School, the foremost master of the rudra veena and specialist in the traditionally classical and devotional Dhrupad Dhamar style of the North. Ustad it was who told him that the sarod was his instrument, and was he right! Sridhar is mainly inspired by Drupad, but you can also hear his love of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in his music. It is quite rewarding to compare his music with that of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
 Raga Piloo - Pandit Nikhil Banerjee $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-904)
Virtuoso Nikhil Banerjee, one of this century's greatest masters of the Indian sitar, passed away in 1986 at the age of 55. Banerjee was widely acclaimed for his intensely individualistic pursuit of the poetry of raga. Nikhil Banerjee studied northern Indian classical music with the sarodist Ustad Allauddin Khan, father of sarodist Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Annapurna and also teacher of Ravi Shankar and Pannalal Ghosh.
 Raga Desh - Pandit Nikhil Banerjee $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-905)
Nikhil Banerjee, along with Ali Akbar Khan, Annapurna, Ravi Shankar and Pannalal Ghosh, was a student of the legendary (and feared) Allauddin Khan, in Maihar. Banerjee passed away prematurely in 1986. Raga Desh was recorded in Stockholm 1975, at the same time as the previously released Raga Piloo (AMCD 904). The great Anindo Chatterjee also plays tabla on this recording.
 Raga Gangeyabushan - Dagar Ustad Z.M. $18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-906)
In the beginning of the 1960’s, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar contracted instrument-maker Kanan Lal to construct a rudra veena, larger – and therefore with a lower register – than usual. In January of 1968, Ustad received an offer from the French label Alvarez/Le Boite á Musiqe (BAM) to release his first record. At the recording session, two takes of Raga Mangeyabushan were made. We had a hard time deciding which version to use, since both were fantastic. On that occasion, we chose the first. It is therefore a great pleasure to present the alternative take this time. Ustad’s son Bahauddin has informed us that the raga’s correct name is Gangeyabushan.
 Raga Mishra Bhairavi - Dagar Ustad Z.M. $temp out of stock-18.99 (cdRoots# amigo-907)
Before Ustad had his rudra veena built, he played sitar and for about ten years he kept switching between instruments before concentrating solely upon the rudra veena. As far as I know, this is the only existing recording of him playing sitar. Every Sunday evening during the 60’s, he held an intimate concert in his apartment where his students played, and the evening ended by Ustad himself performing a raga on the rudra veena or sitar. On this occasion he plays Bhairavi - a morning raga that traditionally ends a concert – but he plays Mishra (=mixed) Bhairavi, where one is allowed to make use of foreign tones in the raga.
 Sluring (US edition) - Frifot $15.99 (cdRoots# ns-sluring)
Yet another amazing recording by one of Sweden's most impressive and important ensembles: Per Gudmundson, Lena Willemark and Ale Moller. Their 2003 release is as stunning as the rest, all acoustic and masterfully performed. The US release includes a video performance
 Jul i Folkton - Various artists $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-jul)
Music for the Juletide, in a recording that includes artists like Sofia Karlsson, Sara Isaksson, Ale Möller, Lisa Rydberg, Lena Willemark, Esbjorn Hazelius, Roger Tallroth, Louise Hoffsten and Rebecka Tornqvist, is probably worth listening to any time of the year. Together they form a Nordic "supergroup" worthy of your attention, even on the hottest summer day!
 Windogur - Lena Willemark $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-willemark-windogur)
The Swedish folk diva in a much jazzier setting.
 Salta - Salta $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-salta)
This Swedish quartet effortlessly skirts the boundaries of jazz, folk and classical music. Ulrika Boden - vocal and flute, Hadrian Prett - violin and viola / Sebastian Printz- Werner- percussion / Risto Holopainen- piano
 Folk Songs - Sofia Karlsson $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-karlsson)
Karlsson is a emotional and warm singer, a skilled player of many traditional Nordic flutes, and on this, her first 'solo' recording, she has gathered together a phenomenally talented ensemble to bring the songs to life: Danish violinist and violist Harald Haugaard, Esbjörn Hazelius on cittern, vocals and violin, Johan Hedin on nyckleharpa and and Leo Svensson on cello. This is a subtle, precise and moving set of songs, one of those recordings that occasionally comes along and demands attention, quietly but insistently.
Bla Bergens Borduner (Blue Mountain Boys) - Blå Bergens Borduner $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-borduner)
Anders Norudde Stake, Ulf Karlsson, Göran Freddy Fredrikson and Stefan Ekedahl
 Sola - Lars Hollmer's Global home Project $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-hollmer-sola)
The off-beat Swedish accordion and keyboard player works with a group of Japanese musicians on clarinet, violin, guitar, toy piano, percussion, saw, mandolin, cello, drums, and other surprises. As always, expect the unexpected from Hollmer and his collaboratuers, from gaudy madness to pastoral beauty.
 Manskratt - Groupa w/ Lena Willemark $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-groupa-manskratt)
The absolutely essential recording by Sweden's great instrumental ensemble and singer Lena Willemark. Finally reissued in 2005. Ever So Highly Recommended!
 Svarta Ballader - Sofia Karlsson $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-black)
'Black Ballads' by one of Sweden's finest young singers, accompanied by a stellar group of musicians including Ale Moller, Lena Willemark, Sara Isaksson, Esbjörn Hazelius, Leo Svensson, Lisa Rydberg and Sofie Livebrant. The recording explores the poetry of early 20th century writer Dan Andersson. Highly recommended.
 Alvdalens Elektriska - Lena Willemark $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-lena06)
One of Sweden's most important artists, Lena Willemark offers her 2006 vision of the folk music of Sweden with her return to her home region of Älvdalens. In spite of the title, this is an acoustic work, with her voice and violin joined by a stellar cast of musicians including Leo Svensson (cello), Mikael Augustsson (accordions and bandoneon), Haci Ahmed Tekbilek (ney), Mikael Marin (viola). Highly recommended!
 live - enteli $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-enteli)
Bengt Berger, tabla and percussion, Jonas Knutsson, saxophones and additional percussion, Ale Mandouml;ller, multi instrumentalist, Johan Sandouml;derberg, keyboard maestro and extraordinary singer Lena Willemark. Daring folk -improvisation.
 Djef Djel - Ale Moller Band $temp out of stock-17.99 (cdRoots# amigo-djef)
Nothing that has ever come from the hands of Ale Möller has been anything less than brilliant, in my opinion, and this one continues his exploration of the Swedish ethos in the global continuum. This time around, it is just the band, a now well-seasoned sextet of musicians from all over the planet, in sync with each other's ideas and exploring new applications of their roots in Sweden, Greece,Mexico, Canada and Senegal.
